Developer Livestream Discussion
why not just make skills different in the different game modes? like in Guild wars 1, when you entered pvp, the skills changed or behaved differently in function. why not just change skills based on game mode or type?
i’m sad they haven’t announced new weapons/new swappable skills for existing weapons/new utilities and elite skills. This is what i want the most! Not use the same utilities/weapons weeks after weeks of playing no matter if i’m in wvw, dungeon or spvp… Don’t take 1 year to release new skills for us to play with or you will lose people.
what both of you have mentioned are my biggest concerns for the game currently.
i’m am starting to feel that we will be stuck with things “as is” for a long time without any meaningful or robust changes to gameplay mechanics, individual character performance, builds, options and such.
we will probably get some minor tweaks while the main focus will be for players to buy gems to purchase gear that changes build performance.
tldr…
this console game calling itself an mmo probably won’t change much so get use to key 1, dodge rolls, self heals, run to tank while teams dps spam, die-rez-die-rez support, making cool “me too” pvp videos and buying moar gems for junk.John Sharp(or was it Mike) said that they could not get into that…could not give specifics. Which leads me to believe that they have some plans and idearrsss. I think in the next 6 month’s we’ll see new abilities. Definitely.
.
SIX MONTHS, that is an eternity spamming boring/bad/broken skills we’re already spamming for 5 months… If i was a dev i’d give everyone a new weapons every three months to refresh gameplay/builds until every class can wield every weapon and then, for expansion include tones of swapabble skills for existing weapons.

And when they put in new spells, after 3 month’s youll come back here saying these spells are boring/broken/bad.
People are just never happy. I agree we do need new abilities, but in the grand scheme of things this is so far down the priority list most likely. Bugs/strengthening the world/bots/boosting all PVP/fixing dungeons up…probably the heavy hitters. Dont hold your breath on new weapon skills.
Yeah, well get a job working for ArenaNet and try that.
Unfortunately for us though, they can’t just keep adding new weapons every 3 months because that means coding in new skills that they’ll need to tweak, fix bugs with, and constantly rebalance….you know; like they’re doing now with the weapons they DO have.
“If your skil does 10 damage to a single target, if you have another skill that have the same opportunity cost but deals 8 damage to 5 targets, the AoE skill is better – we don’t want you to use AoE skills on single target mobs.”
So if I use my AOE on a single target, I will do a total of 8 damage. And my single-target skill deals 10 damage.
How is AOE better to be used on a single target then? 10 > 8 last time I checked…
Hmm how I think the devs look at skill balancing:
Hundred Blades: does about 10k+ damage (I know it’s higher in most cases)
Life Siphon: Lets start out with 12k damage, take 2k off that damage because it does healing, take off 4k because you are mobile, take off 4k because you are somewhat ranged. FIXED, 2k damage.
Lots of skills are like hundred blades for every profession. While I’m not saying to make the damage equal because of something like being mobile, ranged, stealing health would make warriors feel extremely underpowered but at least within reason make these skills do more than 2k damage w/o any boons effecting them.
As a necro, I love feeling like a burden to my group because I know if I would have went warrior, I would have been able to contribute ten fold…
50/50 GWAMM x3
I quit how I want
Having your name displayed to enemies in PvP as a reward would be great, i.e. you have to “earn a name for yourself” in battle – before that you’re just fodder, which is as it should be.
What I’d like to see even more is a tier of titles which express something about your playstyle.
For example, someone who tends to have a strong focus on leading others towards objectives could earn a title which instantly broadcasts to friendly players that this is someone with experience leading, which would probably make them more willing to group up and follow ‘orders’. At the same time, it would broadcast a greater importance as a single target to the enemy. Both these effects would strenghten group play.
As an another example, a player skilled at making solo infiltration runs (by e.g. ninja capping) could earn a title like Spy, which broadcasts to friendly playerw that this player prefers to go it alone so maybe isn’t a good choice to team up with, and marks him for special attention by the enemy. Introduce something like “Spy hunter” next…etc.
Great talk BTW !
Edit: spelling.

I never heard 1 word about crafting but rest of the stuff sounded promising
Any hints on the arrival of gem store item that can change character’s name or making legendary weapons account bound instead of soulbound? I would prefer updates like these than those listed on the transcript.
The problem isn’t aoe.. I personally think aoe should be stronger so smaller groups built around aoe can bust zergs. The problem is that its more benefical to zerg than to not zerg. There needs to be some reward for a smaller number beating a larger number.
Badges are not it.
DaoC’s realm point system would be so perfect for this game. Without realm abilities of course because that would create another balancing nightmare.
The technical format was horrible, using a single mic for three people only works when the mic is passed around, for some of the questions the mic was held by one person while another was speaking which made it difficult to hear what was being said, a directional mic like Blue Microphones Snowball or proper lapel mics would have fixed this.
The lack of media training your designers have made this live-stream horrible to listen to, it was filled with umms and ahhs which makes the speaker sound less informative, speakers often read half the question aloud before answering it, this is problematic as it doesn’t give full disclosure of WHAT is being talked about to the viewer (who may not have the questions in front of them,) essentially read the whole question, none of the question or paraphrase.
What is the point of having a Q&A when you can’t discuss or mention much of the information people are wanting to know? Sure it does count as developers talking to the community but we (the community) only got generic (sometimes already answered) information that is close to unusable by us.
What was the point of live-streaming this when there was no immediate interaction with the audience? This could have been done better as a standalone piece of media on youtube, which would have allowed for slightly more editing (to remove the umms and ahhs) and probably remove the need for mic sharing. It just looked like a PR stunt to say “look, we care about communicating with you guys, we can use technology too!”
Great, you talked to us… but you didn’t deliver much by way of meaningful information and it was done in a pointless format with under-trained hosts, it seems like you don’t really care about your audience if this is the best you could produce with your resources.
I feel that this the best post in the entire thread and also more informative then the Q&A Session and of course the creator gets infracted for it……
Seriously why even bother having a live stream Q&A if you aren’t going to answer any real questions? I tuned in expecting to hear about the back tracking of philopshy, gear grind, gear gap in WvWvW, class issues, DR Complaints, Guild Halls, More PvP Modes, and valid sPvP concerns. What I actually got was a lecture on opportunity costs, why the conquest/capture points type is the greatest kittening thing of all time, and how Ele AOE is OP. Oh yeah and I heard “Ummmm” a heck of a lot. What a complete joke and waste of my time. There was a better Q&A going on between the viewers in the chat log.
And FYI the only thing OP about Ele is the fact that they can’t be killed when defending a keep. You can down them but they’ll just mist form and walk right back into their keep where they can self heal in complete safety. Fix: Do not allow Ele’s to go through keep/tower/structure portals while using the Downed Mist Form ability.
On a side note stop saying eSport. Guild Wars 2 sPvP is the furthest thing from eSport. If it becomes an eSport it will be because the community makes that way and not a moment before then. To expand on the developer comments it’s not the lack of an elo system, leaderboard, or observation mode that’s the problem. It’s the overall design and game type. It’s gets extremely boring after even a short amount of time. On top of that winning a tournament feels extremely underwhelming. The complete opposite of how it felt to win the Hall of Heroes or beat a top 25 GvG team in GW1.
I wish they’d talked more specifically about their story plans in the forthcoming updates.
Was anything said about this? I missed the stream and only the first part seems to be up at the moment.
Yeah, they did in the second part, but this is all it was:
Q: Dynamic system in open worlds – how will it evolve – make it more understandable, more rewards
- Changes to Orr at end of month – adding some new effects, environment zones, rewards
- Continue building lore/story – between content patches we will add in new events, new guild stuff.

I like the sound of more story and lore, but I can’t figure out if they’re actually planning to do something meaningful with the plot or if they really just mean adding a few DEs.
where do they get the info for all this? i remember playing EQ and they would sometimes do in game polls, maybe anet should start doign some .. .

Have prefixes assigned to your invader/defender server tag in WvW:
Veteran, Elite, Champion, Legendary
Bonus points if they come with the colored frames.
I just wanted a AAA MMO with no sub made by ArenaNet. And it’s awesome.”
May I suggest we wait this out? Let ANet nerf AoE. I presume that afterwards will come more QQing than before it. This is my premonition.
ANet has decided to do this and if this will have a negative impact then it will be yet another nail in the coffin.

Something that never gets addressed in these discussions with the Devs (mainly because not enough people ask I guess) is what is up with the Mac client? You guys announce it and release it but then stop giving any updates/info about it. Are you guys still working on it? Will you guys ever fix the bugs that you’ve had on the “Know Issues” list since day one? I have an immense amount of respect for this company and for all that you do but still, it’s getting kind of frustrating. Any response would be appreciated.
I was the White Knight and was a super fanboy for GW universe.
I don’t like anything being said about Dungeons for Jan…
They want to stop waypoints while one person is in combat… YET they said nothing about fixing the bugs like invisible lava in SE or stuck and repeating NPCs shouting.
They nerfed Engineer’s Grenades, now they are nerfing the AoE… I will have a lvl 80 sandbag after all this.
I will give the patch a try… but if I hate it, I will move on.
AOE is already ineffectual in WVW because of the 5-target cap; siege is the only thing that matters.
I’d prefer to see the AOE target cap bumped up to 10 targets and then scaling coefficients looked at.

When there’s tones of skills like in gw1 its hard to be negative because there’s always something to combine and run a new build no one else does. in gw2 its same crap from everyone you play with/against. Its like playing CoD, everyone uses same weapon(s) except this is an mmo that is supposed to have builds which it doesn’t because they’re mostly all the same or no major differences like it was possible in gw1.
