I don’t think GW2 in China did very well.

Chinese gamers are a different breed like Koreans who love to grind and expect it in their MMO’s. They love conventional games that have lots of RNG and flashier and flashier equipment as they progress until their toons take up half the screen. GW2 doesn’t offer any of that as they’ve stated as their mission over and over.

The audience over there expects massive regular updates, power leveling, power creep and insane gear grinds.

You know all those kittenty Asian that launch under great fanfare by a new publisher in the west and are hailed as the next big MMO yet always suffer ~90% loss of players in the first 3 months because they are totally unsuited for the generally accepted way to play MMOs or are destroyed by the new publisher because of greed?

I think GW2 China is that in reverse.

If it is true that GW2 isn’t working out in China then that is really odd. To determine if a new market is viable for anything, there is so much data it is overwhelming., you can literally breakdown a segment to the point where you know what your target eats in the morning.

GW2 also had the advantage of going in after other successful MMOs so its not like they were going in blind with no information of what the Chinese like and expect from their MMOs. Its either Anet doesnt have a marketing team to run the data and didnt bother with a decent agency or their marketing team is really bad.

EDIT: If it turned out that gw2’s hand holding wasnt China’s type of game then it shouldnt have launched there.

Found a pretty funny post from a year ago made a player over there, funny because they are the exact same things NA/EU players say.

It would be great if GW2 really is a success in China because it means there is a higher chance for a GW3

And do you really think Chinese and Korean MMOs that belly-flop over here DON’T have that same research?

and that changes my point how? Also, budget is another problem with most new MMOs. The franchise isnt big enough to support everything the game needs to succeed but the studio gambles and releases anyway. GW2 didnt have that problem.

Lately on reddit there have been a person showing off GW2 chinese low-manning and speed clearing raid and they seem to be enjoying raid:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4t00uw/gw2_cn_5_man_vale_guardian_kill_remaining_0139/

So seems like their behavior isn’t as different as us here.

Anyway, I don’t know about failing. Did it kill WoW there? No, of course not. Does it have healthy population and does it keep getting updated as fast as the wester version? Absolutely. So I think GW2 in China is as dead as GW2 in the west

In the 4Q15 NCSOFT Power Point presentation, it was stated that “In 4Q royalty revenue enhancement was driven by B&S China and GW2 China”.

But what defines failure? It sounds like NCSOFT isn’t upset with the royalties (China GW2 is booked as royalties, not as GW2 direct income) from China, so was it a failure? Or are we talking “failure” in terms of the game as a whole?

Game needs a new publisher in order to go in Chinese market.
and currently all publishers in China are way greedier than Anet, so financially, Anet not making huge amount of money as they do in the west, and plus some game contents are changed by the publisher ( you can pay to be a patron, or become a vip whatever it is called. Also, there is an official store that sells gold…. you buy gold from bots get banned still only via official store by using real life money and all these profit goes to publisher) and all of these are agreed on the contract.

Also there are huge amount of Chinese players that would like to p2w. No matter what games they play, they just spend tons of real life money to buy high end gears. so in Chinese gw2 pretty much everyone has 5+ legendary weapons. if you don’t have one either you really don’t have time, or you really don’t care about gears….

grinding only for bots and gold sellers. they don’t grind anymore.
imagine there are thousands of people would like to pay 100k dollars just to win the game (I have some real life friends who have paid 60k dollars just to win the stupid game, just to be better than all other players. Not in gw2)

so is NCSOFT, Anet dying? hardly… cos people don’t care they just buy everything with real life money, and plus gw2 in game items are way cheaper than most of other games.

but GW2 the game is pretty much dead, it lost 90% of its players within a year. Now all the players are in the same 2, 3 servers. The rest servers are either closed or about to, or Chinese gw2 cant even be bothered to close those ghost servers.

I know because I played Chinese gw2 for awhile when I was studying in China, and because I still log in like once a month

For those following along at home, it’s “Royalties” because a different company actually manages the game in China. They imposed certain additional requirements on the game and how the cash shop works and handle sales. They pay ANet/NCSOFT royalties for use of the franchise.

Swimsuits was probably a minor issue. I think it’s the races ingame that make it fail. Going by the standard asian MMO, this would have made GW2 far more successfull:
- First and foremost, make Charr into cats.
- Give Charr boobs and human faces.
- Give Humans Charr ears and tails
- Give Asurans Charr ears and tails.
- Make Norn 3ft tall and give them wings. Also give them Charr ears and tails.

Done deal. You’re welcome GW2 china.

I wonder if there really is data on this. How the East and West views MMOs has always fascinated me because the West likes to save time and the East plays specifically to grind. Or so trends and rumors say anyway though I’m not sure that’s entirely true either.

I am a Chinese players?I often post on reddit, illustrate the Chinese server.

My English is not good enough, so can only use translator, I’m sorry.

Some people say that China and the European and American players, thought that Chinese players always likes to use money to promote role, and then to beat his opponent. Like equipment to strengthen and so on.

WOW, actually DOTA2, OW, LOL, the four game proved that this kind of view is wrong.

The Chinese mathematical ability is very strong, so on the reaction is very good, this is LOL, DOTA2, OW popularity in China? But do not represent MMOPRG game is not popular in China.China’s Internet population is double that of the United States, half of the population are game players, so different types of games in China will have a lot of gamers.

In China’s top 10 games there are five MMOPRG game, one of the most successful model called “Jian Wang, 3”, the game is almost identical, and WOW just turned into a Chinese ancient costume. It absorbed 30% WOW players, at the same time a large number of GW2 players come from “Jian Wang3”, so I want to use the game to explain why guild wars 2 is not welcome.

1why is being “Jian Wang3” more popular than WOW?

“Jian Wang, 3” game mode and WOW almost the same, in addition to the role of appearance, bred the role is a Chinese.
WOW characters too ugly.
Guild wars 2 character than “Jian Wang,” beautiful hundreds. Players like Asia face, also like the European face at the same time, as long as they are enough beautiful and handsome.

“Jian Wang 3” there is a lot of women players, the game was almost a online dating platform.
“Jian Wang 3” in the game content updates at the same time, has a large fashion design team, costumes for a lot of game design.

According to my simple:
by the game itself has 132 sets of clothing as a whole.
More than 1000 kinds of back, waist props of the skin
Each weapon has hundreds of skin, there are 12 kinds of weapons.
Game mall is about 132 sets of clothing as a whole.
Mount mainly stores to sell. Pet mainly games.

By comparison,
Guild wars 2, the new content in 4 years,
Mall: 32 + weapons, 35 + suit, 23 sets of gliding
The game itself: 19 sets of weapons, the legendary weapon 4, legendary back 2 pieces, pink 2 shoulders.6 armor skin.

“Jian Wang3” prop update speed is almost 5 to 10 times the GW2?Especially on the comparison of armor skin, “Jian Wang3” has 132 sets of the game can get skin (some only color difference), only six sets of guild wars 2.

“Jian Wang3” mall price is three times as many guild wars 2. The number of active between about 1.5 million and 1.5 million (already get rid of double account and gold merchant). Guild wars 2 the currently active number is 8000 less than in China, which also contains a large number of gold COINS businessman.
Add that “Jian Wang3” in a fun activities: "players can kill the game designers, less chance to get a ride: four beautiful girl carried a sedan chair or four old woman carried a wedding sedan. After a deal in playing house prices have reached $540.

Almost everything we use in “Jian Wang3” WOW game mode, in addition to flight. There is a similar to glide mode, is the Chinese qigong, so the game players will still often occur in the wild PVP, there are three different camps in the game, the good, the bad and the neutral. Neutral players can from being killed.

In addition, I think a lot of problems exist in the guild wars 2,
First is the economy system, the main source of income is guild wars 2: gems for 1 gold, 2 game mall, 3 treasure chest
The three systems is the Chinese first used in the game.
We say 1, gem for gold, used in guild wars 2 gold you can buy almost all props, have the gold to any props are easy to make.
Get through the game in guild wars 2 is the best reward to legendary items, and legendary items need a lot of material, and the source of the material has no fixed.
1 so offline gold trading became very much. The server can kill any offline deal, but in China, it’s almost can’t do that, you kill any players to buy gold, means that you will lose him/her and his/her friends.
Although KZW buy gold line has been set up your own website, but KZW are hard to get stable income by operating guild wars 2.
2 any props need a large amount of material, the players were forced to need a lot of time doing repetitive things, especially in the Chinese server 2 months after operation, a large number of players won their first put the legendary weapon, at the same time feel very tired, so China server lost about 50% or more of the players.
I need to explain the above phenomenon, the European and American players think that Chinese players are gold farmers, repeated game don’t get material is China like? In fact, wrong, wrong is very severe.
Chinese players have very many different groups, gold merchants is only a handful of people very little. Games in China gives the impression of Europe and the United States are attribute balance, fair and free game, would like to play in Europe and the people is the players agree with the European and American values, but the guild wars 2 needs a large number of events to get the material, let the game became farmers. This in itself let gamers feel nauseous.

Guild wars 2 game update is very slow (this update speed in Chinese eyes looked like: Chinese people work eight hours a day, ANET only work 2 hours)
Game 4 years almost no prop update (in my eyes), I expected the expansion is in the game update more than 30 sets of armor skin, only 3 sets of results.
Single game content, PVP mode is too little, I like GW1 12 people in the team.
WVW is boring, just follow the commander in run, Chinese players don’t want to listen to command others, more like yourself better (I think is a special historical reasons, China’s education is at an early age education need to obey the command, is actually against a particular system) in China. WOW there are lots of different number of battlefield, although not enough balance, but it’s fun.
Desert WVW battlefield, the map is too big, I always think ANET map design is mad, and not your own fun to play games.
I think the PVP need three to five kinds of patterns, a pattern balance is enough (for reference only). Need a lot of number 15 to 30 people, small map of the battlefield (battlefield more fun than WVW.).
Ten people need a copy of the difficulty, let ordinary players can participate in, rather than a fixed time fixed team, this became the WOW players least favorite part. Chinese players had grown WOW a copy of the high strength.
The legendary armor? Really want to have a legendary armor? This would allow the guild wars 2 mall selling not to drop any armor skin. And the long game process itself is very sick.
ANET poor KZW selection operators in China, the company is a game of word of mouth is very bad company, selling a large number of game props, ruining their BBS. Is so poor. In a turn. WOW in China choose the game operating company is the best of the mouth of a company.

The game in China mostly attracts two types of audience
1. Ppl who like traditional grindy MMORPG
2. Ppl who like large-scale combat, they enjoy playing the WvW mode.

However, GW2 is not doing that well in either of these areas. There is not enough shinies for players to grind for in PvE and the WvW mode lacks supporting and balancing.

Some important supplement and response:
European and American game is still very popular in China, respectively is OW, LOL, WOW, DOTA2.
In China is one of the most popular MMORPG JianWang3 DNF, WOW.
Chinese young people like the European and American values
Face the Chinese young people like South Korea, also like to Europe and the United States face (do you know how many Chinese because Leonardo DiCaprio won an Oscar statuette and feel happy?) . Guild wars 2 character design is very beautiful, but too little. A MMORPG game in China, at least one race must have hundreds of styles, and then sold separately. Permanent release tool let ANET can not make money, a fool can design such props.
A swimsuit? China’s law stipulates the game can’t bare too much, and like a swimsuit will not to play games in Europe and America.
East plays specifically to grind? Because the GW2 players, as a result of the legendary weapons need to grind lost more than 50%.
Legendary items:
The first month in China, the guild wars 2 has sold more than 1 million, most of the players in the first left after the legendary weapon.
Chinese players were willing to buy, also don’t want to make your own legendary items. They just need to spend very few money can buy neat all the legendary weapon in the guild wars 2, and found that guild wars 2 is not update any new items, then AFK.
I made three legendary weapon, whenever I make a pair of, I found that I have wasted 3 months time in repeated the same boring things, in the following a month all don’t want to online.
Legendary items will make graphic design new props completely sold out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
China’s college students have a lot of free time, in addition to playing games, nothing else can replace.
WOW battle mode for me is very boring, GW2 battle mode better.
A copy of the WOW team need to consume a lot of time. Guild wars 2 10 humanism.
I like to do interesting things in a short period of time, to get interesting.
I hate game currency. Game currency to make the game into a boring repetitive. Remember 10000 bottles of wine? Disgusting.
ANET’s design is lack of a sense of humor, sometimes too realistic and the lack of fun.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Suit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I super hate suit, also won’t buy any suit, nobody wants to wear the same clothes with others.
I like your collection of separate armor skin, mashups, and dyeing. Guild wars 2 dyeing is great.

This game failed in China due to the end game. Once you have berserker gear, which does not take long, the rest of the game is making yourself look cool and follow the story. The story has been at a halt for the long time and all the new looks are behind the gem store.

As much as I complained about gear grinds in old mmos, it did give me something to do. I have over 20 ascended sets and I’ve had the best gear for years. I enjoy the game because I’m a fan, but China operates different

I want to say about skin update, take an example:
If let me to design a dungeon about chuck worm
3 x3 boss
5 or 10 players
Normal and heroic difficulty
2 sets of arms skin, like WVW hero weapons, corresponding to the two difficult
Each set of weapons have 2 to 3 different color effects.
Armor skin and special effects Like cold light armor, through to the achievements and heroic mode
Weapons can drop probability can’t too low.
A collection of wires, through the collection of complete can obtain a modelling, three different styles of gliding.
Several drop rare drop 5% probability of potions, for example after eating the potion, players will be chuck worm cub after only 5. Or let a player is chuck worm cubs.
Gem shop sells underground auxiliary agents at the same time, similar style weapon skin, hang gliding, or part of it.
Such a complete updated once dungeon about 3 months.
This design will take up a lot of resources of fine arts,, but looks more like a full update team. At the same time can be stable players online rate.
Remember! No attributes.
Legendary items will make hard graphic design other props rubbish, the design of the skin should be a number of rich, let players free collocation.
