I know there are ways to obtain transmutation charges without gems but in general it’s something you buy from the gem store. It wasn’t always like this right? I haven’t played in a long time but I don’t remember having to buy anything from the gem store to transmute my items. What was the mechanism to transmute items in the past?

They used to have transmutation stones (you’d get some for map completion) … they took those out for transmutation charges. Any existing stones are able to be converted by double clicking them.

Willing to pay for boxed expansion if you put legit GvG in the box $$

I never buy transmutation charges. I always get them for map completion things or when I get keys and open Black Lion Chests. And that was how you got them before; map completion (for the normal ones) and Black Lion Chests for both the normal and fine ones.

Yes it was the same way before sort of. The old way you got transmute stones from either the gem store, BLCs, or map completion. This way you get transmute charges from gem store or map completion.

The big difference with the new way is that your skins are added to your wardrobe. So when you transmute you don’t lose the skin and can use it a many times as you want.

If anything its gotten easier to get transmutation charges than it was before.

The methods haven’t changed all too much really. The majority comes from map completion as it used to.
The addition of it as a PvP reward and Daily login has made it alot more accessible than it was previously.
I have over 100 charges and I’ve never bought a single one from the store.

As for the method prior, they were simply transmutation stones. The yellow ones (most common) only allowed transmuting gear between 1-79. Blues were 80 or under. They did away with that system and made it universal. That was the only difference really.

it was worst you get tons of transmutation stones from map completions to transmute items under lvl 80 and you have to buy transmutation stones from gem shop to transmute item level 80

If anything, the process for transmutation is now easier for ‘free’ players.

Previously, completing a map (even a city) would give you three “Transmutation Stones”, which would allow you to transmute the appearance of a different item onto the stats of an item level 79 or lower. “Transmutation Crystals”, which were needed for level 80 items, were from the gem store, or very rarely from completing daily achievements or out of Black Lion Chests. With the wardrobe update, both Transmutation Stones and Crystals were converted into “Transmutation Charges” (stones converting at 3:1, crystals at 1:1), which work on all levels of gear.

In addition, new ways to obtain transmutations were added. You still earn them by completing maps (now one charge per completion, less than you received in stones but it works on level 80 items). You can also earn a lot by playing sPvP matches, roughly earning one each nine wins. And on top of that, there’s a bag of three included in the login rewards now, along with a chance to get one from the “Black Lion rewards” login reward each seven days.

So yeah, they’re more prevalent than they were before. Especially if you PvP occasionally.

Gotcha, thanks everyone. Reason I asked is because I have two friends who are new to the game now and they were asking about the transmutation charges. It was so long ago I transmuted my 80 that I didn’t even remember how I got my stuff to do it.

If your friends are new I’d suggest they save them up. Leveling happens so fast and armor changes so often it is isn’t worth it to spend the charges while leveling. Tell them to save them for L80.
