Just the term ‘PvP Esport’ itself makes me chuckle, so no. I hadn’t even realized they were shooting for that until I read about it on the forums.

A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

GvG and HoH were e-sports, was a great watch. Not seen anything that could be remotely as interesting in GW2.

E-sport infers something dynamic, watchable and playable- nothing seems to fit that here.

Kinda. Me and a few clannies bought it for its pvp, possibly to form a competitive team like we did in gw1.
We just got tired of tf2 and other shooters comp scene (where we did pretty good actually, we were even sponsored for a bit) and came to gw2, hoping to get as excited as we were during gw1 GvG gold age.

Buuuuut that didnt happen. PvP was shallow, our expectations and disillusion too high, and most of my friends left, logging just a couple hours every week. I stayed active because, even if pvp is uninteresting, i kinda like the pve here.

No in fact i laughed and felt annoyed later on when they kept talking about it. The devs don’t decide to be an E sport the Esport decides to pick up the game. So if you sit their saying we want to be an Esport but you don’t have any of the features or a competitive and fun pvp community then an Esport will never even look at you. Guild wars 2 isn’t even fun to watch for the most part classes aren’t dynamic enough so most people won’t even watch it the biggest thing an Esport wants viewers.

I don’t think there are ANY e-sports it’s actually fun to watch unless you are total obsessive about the game (as I once was about Quake1/2/3, for example). SC2 is incredibly dull to watch, like watching paint dry, as are most MOBAs, but they’re successul as e-sports, so I don’t think that’s relevant.

Put it like this:

I say “No e-sport is inherently fun to watch unless you’re obsessed”.

You say “Any e-sport becomes fun with a sufficiently good commentator”.

I’m not seeing a big contradiction.

I say obsession makes them watchable, you say commentators do. Either way, we agree that it’s not that the game has to look super-cool or whatever. Both of us can be right – it could be that both obsession and commentators can make it work.

I did not play gw1 but I wish they had some guild vs guild like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HhIS-TS10 (from Guild Wars Factions World Championship, August 2006 in Leipzig )

that looks incredible.

I find it fun to watch the rts style esports, but not the fps ones, you can’t really see much of what’s happening from behind one person’s camera.

I find sc2 incredibly exciting ^^ though it’s easily 50-60% the casters that make it.

Never found mmo pvp interesting to watch, but I think that’s just because it’s usually really unclear what’s going on, and the skill cap in mmos is so low. In stuff like starcraft the pros are doing things I have no hope of ever doing :p

Yeah when even anet admit it’s unfinished (on state of the game) it’s time to cut your losses and wait til it’s fixed. I’m very glad this is not a sub game, I’m very lenient on waiting for patches since I’m not paying to wait xD

Very good video, it’s important in esports as any other sport to explain the game well, and focus on the personalities like in that vid.

When I look at games like football they are horribly unentertaining, until you get to know the people behind it (i’m just guessing here, I don’t think anything could make me like physical sports, they are just too simple but I bet nobody would watch it if everyone was faceless drones).

You really do need a great caster, and usually having one action caster for newer viewers and one analyst for experienced viewers works fantastically. Like why I love watching totalbiscuit and dApollo casting sc2, or tasteless and artosis, etc etc :p

You kick the ball into the goal, it’s a lot simpler than any esport. Anyone can understand what’s going on without any prior understanding of the game.

Games often have multiple objectives so they have more complexity.

Ah ok difference in terms, I was talking American football. In any case, I’ve played both and neither are as simple as “kick the ball in the goal” when played on any level above sandlot. American football especially is way more complicated than any esport.

i came to the game with a handful of friends who bought it specificly for spvp (most of them never even leveled up their characters in pve past level 2). I’d say of the 20 or so that started out about 8 stayed hardcore about it for a couple months, and 0 log on now. Theres just better complete games that offer the same (and only) game mode “conquest”. Its like in every major shooter etc has this game mode except its better executed in those games. Guild wars 2 spvp is in beta, looks like it needs another year of development before they can even start to build a community for pvp, then another year before e-sport possibility.

I’m talking about to the viewer. In american football they just have to get the ball to the other end or kick it between those posts. I’m not saying it lacks subtleties, every sport has those, but It’s really nothing near to the depth in games like SC2.

So what’s more subtle about SC2? “Kill opposing enemies” is pretty simple to the viewer, as is capture the flag, and whatever new game modes they added which I won’t play anyhow because even the first SC was a pretty boring game.
You break any kind of competition down to its base it’s going to be very simple: Kick ball, hit ball with stick, throw ball through hoop, kill opposing player/team, capture the flag, hold all 3 points on map, whatever. Seems to me that you’re just trying to say “Video game nerds are smarter than those stupid jocks that run around on a field” but man you don’t need to act like esports are harder than real sports to be able to say that. You are reading too much between the lines, I didn’t say that at all. Either way the point I was trying to make was that all successful sports don’t focus on the game, they focus on the stories around the players. People don’t care as much about the specifics of the game compared to interesting tales of humanity.

Gotta say that’s probably not right either, it’s about the team and not the individual in team sports. I don’t care who Arsenals striker is this year or what his story is as long as he doesn’t suck and helps Arsenal win.

O ya games are really boring to watch for me as well but that doesn’t excuse the fact that one of the features that a lot of people ask for is a spectator mode in pvp games. That Games like Lol and Dota give you links to streams or spectating big tournament games. That streamers have tons of viewers everyday for doing nothing but sitting around and playing video games while chatting it up a little. I have never liked video game streams, tournaments, esports as i always like experiencing my games for myself not watching it on a screen but i have a lot of friends who do so i know for a fact that if people don’t want to watch your game then your not gonna be an esport.

I mean why would they sponser pro teams if nobody was watching them play in fact go read up on South Korea Pro starcraft 2 players. Those guys are extremely popular with the masses.

Pretty much the same for me. I mean, if people enjoy watching video game matches, more power to them, but I don’t for a second understand why – as someone above said, I find it about as interesting as watching paint dry, and find the concept of taking a video game so seriously a bit baffling.

Then again, I love baseball, but I know people who find it paint-dry-boring, so I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.

As for playing an ‘e-sport’ – well, I like competition in my game, but it’s all in good fun. It’s a hobby for me. Anyway, I far prefer WvW over sPvP – it’s more unpredictable and offers a more varied experience. so I’m not interested in the part of the game that would be considered an e-sport.

No, and the very idea that an MMO could ever be an eSport in the same regard as RTS’s or MOBAs is ludicrous from a logical and theoretical standpoint. The only way it would work is to actually have a semblance of balance between classes and it’s not possible to do because MMO’s have PvE elements in them that other games do not.

It’s like saying WoW arenas are an eSport. They were awful, and killed that games PvP for me. (Personal opinion)

It just doesn’t work, hardly anyone would watch it.
