Did you buy GW2 as a PVP Esport?
I didn’t by it for an e-sport but i did buy it hoping to find a long term casual pvp game. Played AB and GVG constantly for like 4 years.
Yeah, I haven’t even logged in since the beginning of Feb.
On a more positive note, there’s always hope for future expansions…hence I still check in on the forums.
No. GW2 will never be an esport, and even if it was I would not be interested.
No, but would’ve loved to be a watcher.
@ Haters : you think E-Sports are boring, I get it, that’s fine. I think watching other people playing golf is 3 times as boring, yet it exists as a sport. Conclusion?
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

The definition of sport is whether you can drink beer to watching it or not?
Because that’s the only excuse I can see for golf!
NTY, In my experience PVP has a direct correlation to the degradation of the community and attracting people that you don’t want to in the game. However, it might as well seeing as they are making GW2 more and more PVP oriented.
Nope. PvE player here. I played GW1 since Prophecies’ s launch, got all expansions, GWEN, so GW2 is a continuation of that.
@zinwrath. What mmo pvp did they leave GW for? Back to wow?
- I hope you realize there are games with nothing else but “PvP mode”. Games with tens of millions players worldwide. Games that are played so seriously there’s actually a market for strategy books about them. Games you could base your university degree on and make your career.
Oh but you ask does it have monsters in it. You want the progress of your character, a magical world. Like a real fairytale with flashing colors and so bloated with effects it makes your toaster scream. You want dear developers listen your multipage feedback. Spoon feed you the next achievement point and goal and title and badge and that’s what makes the game worth your time. Fully decked with swag you can feel like you’re a real PvP master. ****.
Definitely not.
Trying to bolt e-sport PvP onto an MMORPG never works. Even if you take the GW2 approach and make SPvP completely separate to the rest of the game, no overlap in progression, gear, etc. At that point, you have to ask, why did they bother? Why didn’t they just release two games, an MMORPG and an e-sport arena game?
No.
The only thing I ever heard anyone talk about when GW2 was brought up was WvWvW.
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
It’s astounding to me that after two beta weekends it wasn’t clear to everyone that this was not the next big e-sport.
I honestly always sort of laughed to myself when I saw things like "competitive PvP’ being thrown around on various websites and blogs during its development.
No i did not.
I’m yet to find a game where “e-sport” has not ruined a game for me, especially in balancing classes.
This was a major reason i left the game Firefall as it had a huge push on e-sports and ruined the rest of its game..
My guild bought the game based on the ideals promoted by ANet’s manifesto.
We were looking specifically for 5-man PvE content and WvW (old DAoC player).
We understood that SPvP was in the game and knew we would never bother with it, having done top 10 placement in FPS (hitting #2 on international ladder) back in 2000.
I understand the draw of PvP and still stick by my long-held belief that FPS gameplay never functions well within the architecture of an MMORPG.

As 2 follow up questions – why was paid tournments scrapped and how many pvp items can you get from the Gem Store (eg. PVP Fused weapons)?
Just curious. It could be the niche that could boost sales and differentiate itself from its competitors.
No. I bought GW2 in spite of being announced as esport-ish. I hoped it would have a decent pve part. I wasn’t disappointed.
No, but the leading reason I went down to best buy and got it on release day was for the wvwvwvwvwvwvwvwvwvwwvw. I had nothing to do with beta, I usually don’t like to do betas. But researching wvw I figured it’d be something I’d like to do. Wish it was a bit more like the GCW in SWG pre-cu, best pvp ever devised, but wvw is satisfactory. PvE turned out better than I thought it would be.
Played gw1 for the first couple expansions, but didn’t stick since I pref true mmo’s and good FPS’ (mainly quake3 and BF series).
