I’ve seen this ‘diminishing returns’ mentioned on a few topics and would like to know what they’re talking about. So if someone could fill me in it would be greatly appreciated.

if you farm too much you get less drops.

Bristleback can’t hit anything? Let’s fix the HP bug instead.

Also if you complete the same dungeon path, or other dungeon paths too quickly, you receive less tokens.

Normal first of the day tokens: 60
Doing same path before reset: 20
Doing same path third time : 10
Doing 1 path, then another, and finishing the second path within something like 20 minutes: anywhere from 30-60 tokens

What if only one path is viable =(

@claudekennilol
As far as loot DR goes, basically if you farm the same enemies over and over again for an extended amount of time the chances of getting blues/greens/yellows diminishes to the point where you will pretty much only see whites dropping from those same mobs. When it gets to that point, you should be heading to another area of the map or a new zone to farm different sets of enemies/mobs.

There’s also DR on karma. Just to give an example, in Cursed Shores dynamic events are going on all around you. Lots of players will tag an event and run to another event close by to get fast karma/gold/experience. Over time however (I notice after ~40 mins.) karma DR will kick in due to the fact that multiple events have been tagged and karma has been taken in quickly in that 40 minute range. Once that happens, you get progressively less karma/gold/experience until you don’t tag any other event for a few minutes (about 10-15 mins. depending on how far into DR you are). After your break period, you should be able to go back and get full karma etc. and cycle back again.

bugged or impossible.

Sorrows embrace is a good example of this.
Path 1 is currently much too hard for all but the craziest of teamcomps, using perfect skill rotations and co-ordination.
Path 2 takes ages to slog through, and then apparently the final boss is bugged (confirmed bugged) to be way overtuned. My friend who tanks lupicus like it’s going out of style told me he considers the fight at least 3 times as hard.
Path 3 becomes the only path that’s actually doable without a crack team of cyborg enhanced teammates operating on hivemind ;o

Hey guys, I’m sorry if this has already been discussed but I can’t seem to find a confirmed answer. Has it been confirmed if there is diminishing returns on loot for farming in the same place? I heard people complaining about events giving less karma in october, wondering if that’s still happening too. Thanks guys, sorry for the possibly dumb question

Yes it’s been confirmed. Back when the game first went live, they put in an anti farming code that when you stay in a general area and farm mobs you get tagged with lower drop rates. When you kill one particular type of mob (in orr you have no chance but to do that so that’s just crappy design) you get hit with this.

Then months ago they put in secretly a DR system for karma events. We were getting hit with it hard just with general game play. They tweaked it weeks ago so that it wouldn’t be nearly “as harsh” but it still happens when you do events too close together. This is even through legitimate game play.

When the DR hits you get less exp, less karma, and less money. It hits hard and fierce.
This can happen easily in Orr but it also can happen easily in other areas. I have had it happen on my low levels.

It was their attempt to combat the bots (according to them…)

Well that’s a really crappy design. So if I want to farm, say, lodestones..I realistically can’t do so? Sorry but that isn’t a solution to bots..it’s a hinderance to players who don’t mind grinding…just..wow.. Massively dissapointed and unhappy about that.

Edit: Also, I have to say “ninja implementing” a system is kind of kitten ridiculous. And yeah..Orr is pretty much pointless to do anything in with that system tbh.

This system existed in GW1, and still does I believe. Or something close to it.=(
I find I can’t even quest in Orr. I won’t even be farming, but I have to kill tons of zombies just to move around the map. Usually within an hour of playing there I get hit by the DR system. If all the mobs weren’t zombies, the system wouldn’t be so bad. I really don’t know why this system is in place. It hurts the players more then the bots.

I find this hard to believe. But I guess, it’s much harder to note DR on loot than on karma. A few days ago (or weeks, i forgot), I spent a total of 2 hrs in CS doing events, plinx karma train, etc before hitting the DR. I wasn’t tagging and running though, I was staying for the entire event. And the ocasional downtime of selling stuff, salvaging, etc.

Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.

From what I’ve noticed. It takes about an hour of farming to hit Diminished Returns (DR). The reset this, you gotta either; take a break, zone to another area etc.

Once the DR resets you can continue to farm if you like and the loot/rewards will return to normal.

DR can affect: Loot (both quality and quantity), Karma and possibly even Experience (although I never keep track of XP gains)

DR is highly annoying because it forces people to play a certain way or to do other activities they may not wish to do (or even forces them to take breaks when they don’t wish to)

Hopefully DR will be removed entirely some day. I think it was implemented to hamper bots (or as a way to control the economy) but all it does is annoy the legitimate players.

Diminishing returns effects everything you do in the game. Loot from mobs, rewards and other generated rewards are all controlled by Diminishing returns. It’s effect and purpose is to reduce a particular reward should a single player receive or continually achieve the same reward over a particular period of time. it’s in place to discourage farming but also helps aid in botting and exploitative behavior.

Almost everything you do in GW2 is affected by DR in some shape or form.
