Oh, I know that sentiment. It’s so close to the deposit all that I really have to watch that I don’t miss all the time

That option drives me nuts sometimes.

On the bright side, crafting bags, oil bags, invis bags, and other special bags are immune to “Compact.” So if you replace every regular bag with a special one, the only bag that’ll mess up when you hit Compact will be your backpack.

Not a perfect solution, but it’s a workaround, at least.

There are quite a lot of different kind of bags exactly for what you ask …

Get some “Louis Vuitton” bags. They might as well call em that at 20g+ ea.

Fractal bags ignore compact.

Over a year and the forum search is still broken = /

I like compact button, cleans up items I missed while salvaging.
I use crafting bags so materials don’t clutter inventory.
I use invisible bags for consumables and secondary gear.

I like compact button, and I use it all the time to arrange my inventory. Maybe because I have a big screen so I have all my inventory slots visible =)

Well as for your issue, get different bags than normal ones. Solved.

Have they changed it recently?

I’ve kept a bunch of non-junk items like tonics, toys, the Hero’s Ring etc. in an Oiled Bag since not long after the game came out and they were always affected by compact, the only things that weren’t were the ones in my invisible bag, and using all invisible bags simply isn’t practical.

But I just tried it now because so many people said all the special bags were unaffected and those items didn’t move, only the ones at the bottom of my starter backpack.

Which means the compact function is still useless to me, because the stuff I keep on the bottom row of my top bag will still end up mixed up with everything else. But I suppose for some people, who use all special bags, it might be acceptable.

I’ve had 3 invis, 1 craft, 1 oil, 1 rare, and 1 exotic for a few years, and as best as I can remember, compact hasn’t worked with any of them for as long as I’ve had them. That was one of the big reasons I got them. (Well, that, and not having to dig through non-salvageable crap to find the salvageable stuff.)

An option to enable/disable this in the Settings UI would be killer.

Or words to that effect.

I would love an auto-compact to be honest. I’m clicking that button way too much.

Here’s a thought: How about you just slow down a bit, cut back on the caffeine or whatever it takes to not click so fast that you mistakenly click on the compact option.

I mean I personally have crafted the invisible bags myself to hold my gear that I keep on my characters. It’s noticeably cheaper that way but I also stack everything not in them from the top down so that as loot comes in it fills the bag after the stat food and other things I don’t keep in the invis bags. Maybe you should first try using things in the game that can make it easier before crying for the devs to code a new feature that…really isn’t needed.

[Anet seriously needs to re-evaluate their filters…past tense of bite, also eight * character in programming is apparently filtered for some reason…so I changed it to something else]

Oh the problem is you put items you use on the bottom of your back pack?…

Why not just leave it at the top like normal people?

I feel normal and I put all my more permanent stuff at the bottom so I can quickly see what’s new at the top. I have only hit the Compact All button twice, maybe thrice, in three years, never on purpose. And each time it’s been a royal pain to put everything back where it belongs so I can find it. It was particularly heartbreaking the time I did it on my clothes horse clothie with all the gear carefully sorted by type and going from skimpiest to full coverage …

As someone who never ever wants to have the auto compact rearrange everything into what it thinks is reasonable organization (it isn’t, everything gets jumbled into one lump), I fully support having the option to toggle off the chance it will happen.

And I don’t want specialty bags, then I just have to choke them with stuff so new loot won’t burrow down into them for me to find much later.
