I just want to express that I’m disappointed in April Fools this year. I personally love what they’ve done over the first few times. For 3 years Anet made an effort to release an actual April Fools joke (1st year SAB, 2nd year bubble head, 3rd year aviator) and last year it was the patch notes, which did seem rushed at the time but it was different and I gave Anet the benefit of a doubt last year because they were working on the expansion (at the time I just assumed they were working on something big, which later I found was HoT).

I doubt a lot of players actually read the patch notes (or at least I think it’s safe to assume most don’t) and to just do the same thing as last year is just a bit… lazy. At least re-do one of the gags that have effected players in-game, you know, to throw new players off a little and let us veterans have a laugh at their expense (all in good fun of course). ;-)

I guess it’s a little petty, but I enjoy it and it’s disappointing considering we’ve had really great gags for the first 3 years and you expect it to continue for a bit longer before the devs run out of energy or imagination. You can’t create a tradition and then cut it short so soon.

Please bring a proper April Fools next year, Anet. <3

No Anet April Fools is the best. I mean they’re just doing the patch note thingies these days but reading it is fun, especially for WvW.

- All siege in friendly WvW objectives is now hostile

… wait a minute… hmmmm… that’s not listed in the patch notes… that’s actually in the game.

Sigh.

On one hand, yes, in-game prank would be awesome. But on the other, the notes are really fun and at least no one (hopefully) will get offended by those. Well done

And I’d actually really like the thing with planting Caladbolg. I’m all for running around with miniature Trahearne on my back, saying “This won’t end well” randomly.

You should be aware that ArenaNet is based in the greater Seattle area, and they work on PST time. It is now 12:48AM here, April 1st. Usually, updates and events hit the game at 9AM or 6PM PST. You’re complaining about April Fool’s, yet it’s only 48 minutes into the day in Seattle. At the time at which you made this post, it was still March 31st.

I like the fake patch notes. It was often my favourite part of April Fools in GW1.

Of course it helps when there’s an actual update to the game, so more people go looking for patch notes and they’re more likely to believe them. But I still laughed while reading them, especially the bit about fixing a bug that prevented RNG being affected by wishful thinking.

But I also think it’s more in the spirit of an actual April Fools joke than many of the things in-game. The idea is to tell people things that at first seem true, but ridiculous, and then either wait for them to get the joke or tell them. Giving everyone bobbleheads or airplane wings or whatever doesn’t really fit that.

SAB did the first year, especially because if any Living Story release included anything that involved jumping, even if it was 1 minor optional achievement some people would be on the forum raging that the entire update was all about turning the game into a platformer. So turning the game into a platformer was pretty funny. But at this point I’m not sure it really counts as an April Fools joke, because everyone knows it’s coming and what it involves.

I mentioned that they did it last year and that it was disappointing that they re-hashed the same idea this year. A+ on reading comprehension

Also it appears the patch notes is all we’re getting this year… again. I just would have liked a more in-game experience like we had previously

We got what we deserved. People keep raising forks and torchs about everything (remember the aviator prank controversy). It’s just too much effort on A-Net’s end to be inventive and get shut down for it. So no, I’m not surprised, and I certainly do not put the blame on A-Net.

Had no idea people complained about it! To be honest as I was abroad at the time I had missed on that one but truly found it entertaining. It’s just one day so there really isn’t any harm in that. I feel that because not everyone bothers to read the notes, it is missed on a big portion of the community. I guess I don’t find these overly entertaining because I read The Sims patch notes regularly and they always have this kind of humour added to them, that I don’t find Anet’s to be a special thing even if it’s just once a year

I personally appreciate the effort of putting something in game, only because it includes everyone who logged in that day, rather than only those who read the forums/patch notes.

The Aviator thing they put in was your character ran around with their arms spread out like airplane wings and made airplane sounds, you know like how little kids pretend. There was also a plane crash that happened right around the same time. Clearly the two were not related in any way, as Anet would have had to code the prank in and would have been working on it well before the crash occurred. But people looking for something to get offended at latched on and painted Anet as purposefully mocking the crash victims. After that, I can’t really blame them for not wanting to do a fun little thing for the community that just ends up getting them pad PR.

Thanks, I didn’t know about that. It’s definitely an unfortunate coincidence, but the community was wrong to paint Anet as doing that in mockery of the crash. I can’t fault them for not doing anything fun either.

the patch notes are lame, it’s like the same joke told every single time.
i remember the time when april fools was fun, even in GW1 we had plenty of things like tiny players with full size mini’s or gender swap.

Anet is getting more and more lazy, the only single thing they added with quality is the new outfit……and that after months of nothing.

The problem with in-game jokes is that many players have not purchased a sense of humor (5000 gems) and have often gotten up and arms over it.

No kidding, I have seen people even complaining about SAB simply existing, as it is too silly and doesn’t fit the tone of the game. This is content that is self contained in it’s own instance that they can easily fully ignore, but they don’t like it so they complain that it is ruining the game.

I’m also saddened by a second year in a row without rampant silliness. When I logged in to the aviator prank, having carefully avoided any spoilers, I felt nothing but pure delight. Yes, I had been following the news about the plane crash in great detail, yes, I was fully aware of the tragedy, but nothing about the aviator prank felt even remotely connected to the crash. The wave of outrage on the forums seemed vastly out of place to me.

So then last year we didn’t get a fun thing, just patch notes — pretty much every MMO puts out fake Apr 1 notes, it’s hardly unique to GW2 — and of course the return of SAB which is indeed fun but isn’t, at this point, a prank.

I don’t like mean jokes, I never have. But ANet gave us pure goofiness for a day and now it’s a let-down not to have something like that any more.

Oh well, I suppose I can head into ESO for some more fireworks and pig stealing and Renn-Fest playlets before their Jesters Festival ends, with my silly high-step walk and flourishing bows, to see if I can complete the meta achieve there on a second alt while getting double xp (those food recipes just refuse to drop, grr, but it’s still a fun time).

Yea, it’s one thing to not like something. But it’s another thing to not like something on behalf of people where people ask for things to be removed despite the fact other people may be using it. It’s this level of self-centered First World Problem mentality that really is only possible from the comfort of a room with a PC.

That being said, I suppose in the past there have been actual issues like the bobblehead thing of which people reported disorientation. In that case, I wonder if it’d be nice to have settings that remove various effects. Right now, for example, if you turn off postprocessing, you don’t get the drunk effect visuals.

Personally, I wasn’t fond of the aviator prank, but that probably has more to do with the memory box having an effect you can’t easily get rid of. That was more of an issue with the quality of the joke and I woudn’t want to say stop any further pranks as such.

Unfortunately, in the end though, I understand why they just kept it to patch notes. Maybe it’s how gaming works these days, but I honestly think people take these kinds of games too seriously.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,

Believe it or not, I look forward to these April Fool’s posts, and they always make me laugh at imagining it in-game. I do miss the tricks we used to get in the game, and remember some fun days in the past.

I think my favorite was when we logged in GW one day to find we were mini’s and our mini’s were character size. Thought I’d fall off my chair laughing when I figured out what was happening
In GW2 a few years ago, the bobble head one appeared when we were at the end of CoF (story-mode, I think), just after the final cutscene, and all of a sudden our characters were bobble heads. We had a good laugh after checking our graphics settings. rofl. Screenshot time! I had a blast with the aviator day, and never gave a thought to any connection, nor any disrespect from anet, with the airplane crash tragedy – as I suspect most people didn’t.

Sad that some players complain about a bit of fun, as I saw on forums at times. Sheesh, get a sense of humor already! A bit of silly fun is great! Can’t say as I blame anet for discontinuing this, and dedicating time to something that some players will just use as an opportunity to bash them.

Just wanted to say, thanks for the update and the laugh!

I always enjoyed the april fools gimmicks in gw1 and the first years of gw2…for a while. Then they lost their appeal. Generally I would have fun with the gimmick (chibi Gwen was my fave) for long enough to take a few screen sbots, get my friends to log in, show off to my wife…and then go back to playing.

In all honesty it was amusing for about as long as are tbe patch notes (which I do enjoy very much). I guess my point is that joke patch notes are pretty much on par with tbe events for me. I enjoy both, but wont mourn the event….except chibi Gwen.
