The new feature pack is discouraging new entrants.

I was checking youtube and found this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqJlKjwrKB4#

Scary older players are not encouraging him to stay, they are instead telling him to leave the game and how to get a refund. That is a very bad advertisement for the game.

This person is not the focus of the feature patch, he is not a new player playing GW2 for the first time post patch.

I too have (had) 2 characters in the 30s (35 and 36) and while I don’t actively run the PS till I’m much higher than the recommended (in the past) level I didn’t have a problem adapting to the new system. The only irritant was that I couldn’t swap my elites till I got to the break point (lvl 40) again. I could still use the skill selected.

I think people are not defending GW2 and Anet because they are po’ed because of the change happening with poor communication and it happened to many when they were in the middle of something (example: the commentator in the video) with no warning. Anet failed to let the player base know just what and how precisely, was changing prior to the change in the 3 weeks of blogs that prefaced the FP. They should have been more clear and forward in the huge amount of time they gave themselves. It was a squandered opportunity that I hope they learn from.

Do I like the level gating? Not really but I can see why it was done. It’s a shame that the 1-15 zones are now rather boring but then again they are supposed to be for new players and not really for us vets so I get it. As for the effect on alt leveling, meh, seems they level just as fast even if the tutorials are a bit annoying. Again that is for new players so I can hit “x” just fine. I will say that I will miss the old way of getting weapon skills, it was easier and more fun but having it automatic will probably help truly new players.

Peace.

Anet’s biggest problem is they’re wasting time on this stuff instead of putting out new content.

Even the most fanboy players have acknowledged that there has to be something huge going on in the background because of how small the updates are. The amount of content produced just doesn’t match with the amount of people working on the game. It’s only logical to assume something is being worked on. Most seem to think it’s an expansion pack, I can only hope.

I hope so, because if it’s not, then it’s done.

I’m giving Anet until x-mas to release an expansion – then I’m moving on without looking back.

I don’t play nearly as much right now, but with no x-pac (or equivalent level of content) by christmas, there will be plenty other options to choose from.

I would just quit playing now then. There is no way we will be seeing any decent amount of content by December. We already know they are planning on continuing the living story here in a couple months. By December I’m expecting the Halloween event and 2 living story updates. So about 5-6 hours of gameplay with some of that being repeats.

It’s highly unlikely that Arenanet releases an expansion before Living World Season 2 is finished, which won’t be finished until the end of year.

My hot water heater is called a hot water heater…but it only heats cold water. Hot water doesn’t need to be heated.

What something’s called doesn’t equate to why it was designed. Colin was pretty clear about player retention for people just starting being a problem and it had to be fixed. Presumably because they’re going to have a free trial and they want that experience to hold more people.

I don’t know why you’d think that meant someone already at level 8 or 9 who experienced the old system already would like this one better. Particularly if a bunch of experienced vets are knocking it.

I used to work at a retail store selling water heaters and this redundancy always annoyed me. They are called water heaters in the usa, not hot water heaters. Being from the usa yourself and being a man of a language, I’m sure you already knew that though.

He is not from the USA.

I am, and people frequently call them hot water heaters, redundancy or no, where I am from. How did you become annoyed by the redundancy if people did not use the phrase ?

He said “My hot water heater is called a hot water heater”. No, it’s not. Even the manufacturers refer to them as water heaters. If I started calling my computer screen a picture screen, it doesn’t mean it’s called a picture screen.(“What something’s called doesn’t equate to why it was designed.” makes it sound like he was referring to hot water heater being the actual name of the appliance.)
He’s from the USA. He moved from the USA to Australia 10 years ago. When you’re 52 years old and move to another place only 10 years ago, I would definitely still say you’re from the USA.
I got all of this information from his posts over the years haha.[/quote]

Different states use different terminology depending on the heritage of the population living there. It may annoy you, but in my area, they do call them hot water heaters. Just because they don’t refer to them as such in your area doesn’t mean that your terminology is universal in this country.

They keep saying it is for the new players. But the thing is the game is actually harder with a bunch of skills or traits locked. (not that the game is actually hard…)

I’ve found leveling my necro harder than leveling a necro pre-patch.

I can’t even imagine how much harder AC will be if you actually try to do it at the recommended level. It’s much harder than killing trash mobs, and you won’t even have all of your skills by that point.

Peace.

Not at all.
In creating an alt (some of us have over 20), you are pushed into the same exact places and experiences as that of a brand new player, with the tutorials and hand-holding forced guides to boot.
Obviously this is nice for a brand new player, but they will then have to rinse and repeat for every alt they make, either veteran, newish, or tot tally new player. In the end, you just get tired….
To anyone that says “this doesn’t affect us”, it really does. It affects the whole player base, as the patch does this to everyone who makes a character.
People only wish that they could disable this patch if they were making a second character. Or if they were active before the patch was made.

I used to defend Anet and GW2 here on the forums and other places. Sadly I can’t really do that anymore thanks to the new patch.
