It was a long bumpy road on the way to discovery and for a while there I was doubtful that I would ever make it… him.. my Main toon.

I tried every class/race combo, but nothing really stood out as ‘the one’ for me.

Until I placed a 2h Sword into the hands of my newly created Guardian.. The visuals, the power, the survivability. Everything I was looking for.. I found the one, I found my Main!

So how did you come about the discovery of your main toon?

Dunno man, I’ve been playing an ele since closed betas and I love the class, just wish ele staffs had more buffs to give allies.

Well, I made an ele at first, namd him the same as my GW1 ele and off I went. Was amazing at first – really explosive skills etc.

Then I made an alt – my Warrior. I pretty much worked out a while ago, that I tend to go for more hack n slash type characters or sturdy dps types. It was so much more fun for me smashing through mob with an axe/mace than staying back zapping stuff.

At the end of the day it came down me being good with a Warrior and being pretty rubbish at playing an ele (or magic classes in general).

Also…playing a Warrior with the Golden Axe music in the background helped

I don’t have one main…I have different mains for different things. For example, my mesmer is my dungeon and fractal main. She’s great a group, but she’s not much fun to run around Orr with. Not as much fun as my warrior. So I put some zerker gear on my warrior, just to run around Orr, usually with someone else.

But I don’t really love the zerker warrior when I’m visiting low level zones, and having fun with the guild. For one thing he kills things too quick and it can annoy others. So I play my ranger most of the time, when I’m just hanging out in world.

Lately I’ve been working a lot on my necro when I solo in world, because she’s going to get my second legendary weapon (yes I’m working on getting two of them at the same time…kill me now).

I don’t know how people can live with just one main. Then again, I have more time to play than most people.

I’ve always chosen a male human ranger as my main in every fantasy game (MMORPG and otherwise) I’ve ever played, including both GW1 and GW2, so my decision was already made going into this game and I haven’t regretted it once.

I chose mesmer more or less at random in gw1, and eventually fell in love with it, once I learned to play it. Skip a few years, gw2 of course I had to try the mesmer first, did it in betas, loved it. I tried out other classes so I could get a sense of them, but mesmer was still my favorite. Now I’ve got her up to 80 and and ele up to 80 but mesmer is still by far my favorite. So that’s how I found my main.

Well, my first character was a human male thief, which I made the first day the game was out. A month after the game was released, most my friends who played it had quit, so I followed suit and quit since I didn’t have people to talk to/do stuff with.

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago when I was sick during Spring Break with an excessive amount of free time on my hands. I decided to pick the game back up to fill in some of that time, only this time I wanted to try to mix it up when my new toon. I made a norn female guardian thinking that it would be substantially different than my glass-cannon thief was, and thankfully, I was right.

While leveling, my survivability was better than my thief’s, which became more and more apparent as I continued to level higher and higher into the levels that my thief really started getting hit hard at. I first geared myself as a tank sporting mace/shield and 2h sword, but eventually I got tired of watching others outscale me in DPS by a great amount.

It was around the point where I hit 80 that I decided to pick up a 100% offensive build to try and raise my DPS. This was nice, since the guard kit allowed for me to have some survivability through traits/6-0 abilities, but on higher lvl mobs, I ended up being hurt a little too badly for my taste. I did some research into other’s guardian builds, and put together my current build, which combines power, pres, toughness, vitality, and crit dmg in the same set. Using that hybrid of DPS and tank stats, along with a fun solo PvE trait build allowed me to reach the perfect level of both tankiness and damage.

Since then, I have been having a blast running around using my 2h sword + Scepter/torch build, which is why I now consider my guardian to be my main character. I never really had an interest in playing a mage/ranged class, as I’m not a huge WvW player, and I like being in the thick of combat. So, unless I try out a class like warrior and just fall in love with it, I believe I will always consider my guardian my “main” from now on. Alos, I’m starting to work towards the sunrise legendary, so that just gives me even more inspiration to continue playing my guardian.

Assassin was my main in GW1 so going thief to start my GW2 adventure was a no-brainer. Doesn’t feel as fun as Assassin in GW1, I loved the combos and KD’s that Assassins were capable of. I mainly play D/D only because of my 2 Corrupted Shards that look kitten, but yeah, Thief is my main in GW2. Hopefully Anet doesn’t cater to the whiners further down the road though.

Engineer is my main, and I knew it would be since the class was announced. I’ve always been one to choose the least magical class in fantasy style games, and nothing fits that roll better than the engi.

After playing him, I love the possibilities the class brings. I have tons of unique and fun builds to choose from. Swapping between kits and weapons with no cooldown is so amazing that I find it difficult to play a more standard class with 2 weapon sets and a 10 sec cooldown on swapping.

Plus, I enjoy playing my engi in WvW because we’re such a rare class I find most people don’t know how to fight one, resulting in rather amusing fights. Being so unpredictable is deadly.

I started with a Norn Ranger…. and loved it…. until I made a different character.

Charr Warrior is really awesome… and I’d say its about tied for my first (my main) with my Human Necromancer.

Norn Guardian is a close second…

Charr Engineer collects dust with my ranger.

Haven’t really used my Sylvari Mesmer once I hit 80 on it….

my human ele is only level 40… and I doubt it will even become my main.

…and I have never played an asura or a theif.

So how did you come about the discovery of your main toon?

My first character was a Norn Warrior. I had an interesting backstory for her that somehow made sense. She had a pretty generic name, but like most of my characters, those names are normally words that could be found in the dictionary— meaning, they’re not really names but just words that somehow look like names.

However, I learned how boring it was to play a Warrior.

I also made a character named Fleeting Flash on that same day, since that was the name I reserved back in GW1. She was originally a Guardian (as she was in the BWEs), but after playing a Paladin in WoW for way too long, I figured I could use a change of pace. I remade her into a Human Engineer. I still got to use a shield, but instead of a 1-hand melee weapon, I could use a gun. That and since the removal of the classic “trinity” in dungeons, I figured I’d play a profession that looked fun and interesting, instead of a class that fulfilled a rolled that’s always lacking, usually a Tank of some sorts. Don’t get me wrong— I actually enjoyed tanking, but I never asked to be a tank. I just learned to be one so I could get into dungeon groups faster.

Originally, I wanted to play my Engineer the same way I played my Ritualist in GW1, a spirit spammer (but with turrets), but it didn’t quite work out that way. Instead, I started out with a Flamethrower, which I actually found pretty fun to use despite bugginess of it at the time. I leveled up using that up until I practiced the art of lobbing Grenades when doing higher-end dungeons. One key thing was that I had to get use to not using an auto-attack. Soon after, I felt I had a bit more control of this profession and later discovered that I could set one of my utilities on Auto-cast.

I’ve been through some of the Engineer’s nerfs and other “tweaks,” like the nerf to Grenades while the transition was made to allow kits to adopt the characteristics from the weapons starting with the Sigil and then the stats the month later. I knew people who rerolled at the time, but I stuck with it. I guess I was too stubborn to quit. Also, I like the recent buffs to turrets. Sure it’s a small step into it, but this patch inspired me to explore the use of my turrets, especially the Net and Thumper turrets. Definitely makes many encounters a bit more simpler.

Today, my Engineer now has access to every dungeon armor and almost every dungeon pistol and shield. Why? Because I like to RP and having access to a variety of armor skins gives me more options to mix-and-match just find that perfect outfit for the occasion. She also has the legendary shield, The Flameseeker Prophecies, a shield I could have given to a Guardian, but I’ve grown too attached to my Engineer that she had to use it. Plus, shields go well with my Engineer’s personality and character.

My warrior is my main and I don’t think it’s going to change. Not only the warrior is my favorite profession, but I really like the way I designed my warrior, I got a cool little RP backstory for her, and for some reason I identify to her a lot more than my other characters. I’ve spent a lot of time just collecting great dyes and cool armor skins that suit her well. I’d never spend a lot of thoughts (or gold) for that kind of things with my alts.

I started with a guardian during the beta. I thought I’d like it because I’m a defense-oriented player, but didn’t really like it. I got bored and tried the warrior in the last ~4 hours of the beta, I liked it much more. It’s able to be very tanky too, but they have a more “in your face” style which I find satisfying. That’s exactly what I needed!

So I made a warrior in live and she was pretty much a main from day 1. I like how I can be super tanky with mace/shield in a high level zone, and then swap to greatsword or hammer for the Wayfarer dailies and go on a rampage. Or grab my bow or my shotgun and stay in the back while shouting heals or planting banners. I know all classes support varying playstyles, but the warrior feels like she has the best variety of playstyles.

I have all the professions at 80 now and can honestly say I don’t have a main. I’ve tried and haven’t had success so far. There’s always a character who beckons, gets dusted off, and we have a great time for a few days. Honestly the warrior and guardian get played most and the ranger/engi bring up the rear. After warrior/guardian, my necro gets the most attention. It’s a complete change up from melee and there’s something immensely satisfying about dotting up a champ or vet and hitting Epidemic. I truly envy people who can settle on one character to main—it would sure make map completion a lot easier. (And, it would be a lot easier to keep up with Ascended gear.)

On a side-note regarding mains and alts: near the beginning of my brief time playing WoW, a fellow player there told me that whether you only have a main or whether you also have alts depends a lot on how much you play the game as a whole. That if you play a LOT, then you can advance both your main and your alts in short order. But if you only play a little bit at a time, then it’s better to concentrate solely on your main until you’ve reached (or at least nearly reached) the level cap before starting an alt.

Has anyone here successfully been able to defy that bit of advice (i.e. significantly progressing both main and alts while playing only a little bit at a time)?

It’s far easier to cap one first here, then work on the next. Took twice as long to lvl the first compared to the second, mostly because I gathered for crafting and saved up a little gold to make a second character level much faster. Yet still, my first roll was a ranger, but by mid-lvl I started working on a different character and leveled that first. Wound up deleting the ranger.

I’ve been playing elementalist in the beta and was so convinced I was gonna go elementalist up until the very day of launch where I remembered my first GW1 character ever named Mocking Bird which was a me/e so I made a mesmer instead.. I still wish I went and made that elementalist i originally wanted. -_- too bad i already made twilight, bolt and minstrel for my mesmer or i would’ve renamed her and transferred the name Mockingbird to an elementalist and switch mains.. -_-

gw1 main was a ranger and I wished I could run it on gw2 but the part where a pet is mandatory not optional made me steer away from the class.

I prefer the term ‘primary character,’ due to my time in Eve and its normal use of multiple accounts. Anyway…

At this point, it seems I’ve settled on a Sylvari Engineer and Charr Guardian, which were my first and second characters. I’ve started to get exotics lined up for the Guardian, but the Engi keeps getting moved in different directions from patches, so he’s staying in rares for now (other than rifle). The Guardian is also a bit ahead due to limited play time – restricted by RSI concerns – and the character-bound nature of Fractals (and now WvW).

I do have two other characters that I poke at from time to time, a warrior and a ranger. The warrior may end up being deleted due to being too boring for my own taste (ironic, since the character slot was originally a thief which got deleted – too much hand/wrist pain). I find the ranger quite fun in sPvP and World PvE, possibly because he’s an Asura (dodge animation amuses me a lot, and every pet so far is more than twice his size).

I’m still glancing at the unused 5th slot, which may end up as a Necromancer (mostly because I’ve not tried that yet). I’d have to go Human for that one, as its the only racial storyline I’ve not completed yet (though I could delete after that and start over in a different race).

Warrior is by far the best class for PVE content, IMO and thief is by far the best for PVP. Guardian and mesmer would be my 2nd choices for PVE and PVP respectively. Necro and ranger are worthless. I haven’t bothered with ele or engi yet.

The character I play the most is a Human Engineer, but that’s simply ’cause I found world completion and jumping puzzles easier with him, so I bring him out for those.

As far as ‘mains’ go, I don’t think I’ll ever have just one character I can focus on. I thought I would be satisfied once I got every profession at 80.

I tried every class in the betas and decided I liked the thief best… so my first character was a thief. Got her to 80, she has 98% map completion, storyline completed, full exotic cultural T3 gear… and then I made an ele to complement my boyfriends warrior. And after experiencing the versatility of the ele, I find it very hard to enjoy my thief. Thief is mostly DPS only, but with ele I can do damage, I can do some excellent support and crowd control, depending on the situation.
Right now, I am also leveling a guardian and mesmer, but I keep coming back to my ele.
