Q:
Do I gotta buy HOT Twice?
A:
There isn’t actually a physical version. There’s a box, but all that’s inside it is a code to add access to the expansion to your account, exactly what you get with the digital version.
If you really want a box I’d suggest approaching a store that sells it and asking if they would give you one of the extra inlays, or sell you one if they want to be difficult. If it’s anything like the places I’ve worked they were sent far more than they’ll ever need (as in 100+ more). It might not even be that much of an odd request, people often ask for posters, cardboard cutouts and other promotional materials.
And once you’ve got that all you need is any empty DVD case, and you’ve got your HoT box.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
The physical version of the game, aside from speeding up your day one install (assuming no form of preload), would be fairly useless, surely? If you want the box (which is fair enough I guess!) then maybe just prioritise that? It’s really not worth spending the insaneballs money you’re proposing, since you may as well just buy a physical copy and the gems seperately!
Ultimate only for sale online and not box edition of it. If you want a box to put on shelf to you have to buy regular one from store that sell it. Seem kind of expensive to me to do this just to have a box but if that is what you want only way to get it. Even box version from store only have a code inside from what I understand and not CD.

The only thing that is in the boxed edition is a account code. No CD. And they only come in standard edition flavor in physical copy.

You could always buy 2 games to support the devs though
I thought you could upgrade the game in game through gems, which you can buy in physical boxes as well.

Once buy HoT can not upgrade to Ultimate. Have to buy Ultimate from start to get rewards from it. Can upgrade to Deluxe though.
From same link I post before.
Additionally, there won’t be an option to upgrade to the Ultimate edition later if you decide to purchase the Standard or Deluxe edition.
If you decide to go the route of getting a physical box, according to the FAQ, physical editions of the Deluxe version are/will be available, and then you can purchase the extra fifty dollars worth of Gems separately. You will have, then, the equivalent to a physical version of the Ultimate Edition (which is a Deluxe Edition plus $50 worth of Gems for an additional $25 dollars) for a total of $125.00.
Good luck.
How do I explain this in a nice way? Ok there is no, never was no, and never will be no physical copy of Heart of Thorns. The reason that Arenanet not Nc Soft published it was because no physical copies were needed since anyone can download from the site. They do not advertise on TV like that other MMO does. They advertise it all over the place online. They do shows, and interviews etc. to tell people in the gaming world all about GW2.
Having a physical copy is useless after the first month or two. Big deal you can reload that part a bit faster, but its still goin to miss a lot. Even Microsoft saw the great idea that Arenanet has done and even though u can get Windows 10 on disc. Most of it will be online all the upgrades to it too.
So please stop asking about the physical copies of HoT and pay attention to what is going on with things. If you want a physical copy of GW2 get a 64-128 gig jump drive load it on there and play it from there all you want. There you go a physical updateable copy of GW2 HoT

I am afraid you are mistaken.^ (Unless you are referring only to the Ultimate Edition, of course.)
There are, and will be, physical copies of Heart of Thorns. At least, you get the ‘box’, even though there is only the Serial Key inside, so far.
You can check the HoT FAQ and other posts/threads here in the forum for confirmation.
Good luck.

You’re better off buying gems in that case.

I think what Chyanne Waters talk about by physical version is CD because they talk about use to load game and later talk about use flash drive. Many people think physical mean a CD not just box.
Wished their was a DVD.
I’m looking forward to the expansion. But not looking forward to the download.Looking back to the start of GW2 it took me 3 days to download the remaining dat file after install.I have a very limited bandwidth.Just hope I don’t develop an anxiety attack during download.
