Do I need to buy HoT straight away? QUESTIONS

Can someone answer this question for me? I tried looking for answers already but just got confused.

Im a pretty casual player I bought the game in 2012 or whenever it was released but only have 1 80 after 3 years (I keep quitting and coming back and deleting alts etc), only ever did 1 single dungeon and never really touched much on RvR.

Basically I’m thinking about coming back more fulltime and I dont have a problem with paying for HoT but there’s just so kitten much content I haven’t even touched yet and I don’t really think the new class interests me.

Would I be sPvP viable still?

Would I get access to elite spec?

Would I be competetive in RvR?

Would I get access to new PvP maps?

Would I be playing only with people who have no expansion?

Is it really recommended I have to get HoT or can I hold out for a couple of months while I play out the normal game and maybe get a fresh toon to 80?

Thanks.

sPvP will still be viable. You just won’t have the elite speculation trait line and skills/utilities.

No. You won’t have access to the elite spec without HoT.

You should still be competitive.

Yes. The PvP maps are free to everyone.

You will be playing with everyone still. You just won’t be able to access HoT areas.

The choice is up to you. If you don’t want to play it just yet then you can wait. The price may even be cheaper by the time you’re ready.

Yes. The playerbase isn’t being divided by the expansion. You just won’t be able to access HoT-only areas.

Just as a reminder, buying it now, before release, gets you the veteran appreciation free character slot. If you choose to buy it after release at any time you won’t get that. That’s a $10 value unless you just have no interest in another slot.

Just play the regular game and wait for HoT to be on sale. A month after release starts the holiday season.

Would I be sPvP viable still? Yes (might not necessarily be best possible build available on each class though – but you could almost certainly find something competative)

Would I get access to elite spec? No (need HoT)

Would I be competetive in RvR? Yes

Would I get access to new PvP maps? Yes

Would I be playing only with people who have no expansion? Nope, players you see in Core Tyria will be those with and without HoT (you may see a slight population density change as people zoom off to the new maps though)

Is it really recommended I have to get HoT or can I hold out for a couple of months while I play out the normal game and maybe get a fresh toon to 80? Get it when you feel you’ll enjoy it, if you still have plenty to do and are satisfied with Core atm there is no rush, later if you join a guild who are doing HoT and you want to join them it wouldn’t take long to upgrade. Get it if/when you want.

Do be aware, any Living World/Story releases won’t be accessible (and free) if you do not own Heart of Thorns.

If they are offered later (use the same release model as S2), you will have to pay for each episode. Thus, any savings in the cost of HoT may be wasted by the cost of LS.

Good luck.

HoT is a rip off for people who already bought the core game

D/D Elementalist takes no skill but is good at everything in the game.
Mesmer is unfun to play against and does everything better than thieves.
Hoping those two get gutted with nerfs

err that’s subjective while many others may argue otherwise while it all depends on what you find value for your money!

After playing the game since shortly after launch, I feel that its perfectly reasonable to pay for the expansion after playing for so long without having to pay a stupid sub fee

Might be a diff story for those who have not played as long. But hey, it is what it is

I for one welcome our new Mordrem overlords

You just have to log in while the events are going on for them to be unlocked. You just won’t have access to the areas they are taking place in until/unless you purchase HoT, but if you log in during that period you shouldn’t have to buy them separately. A free account could theoretically have all of S3 unlocked while being completely unable to play it due to having no access to the maps it takes place in.

I guess that remains to be seen. According to Mike O’Brien, only those players owning Heart of Thorns will be privy to the free updates, or so his quote seems to indicate:

While Guild Wars 2 is now free, it won’t receive future content updates—including the newly announced raids. Those are earmarked for Heart of Thorns, which will essentially become the live version of the game.”

I would hold off on buying HoT right away . I would want to make sure I am committed to to being a returning player and reacquaint yourself with your character you chose and the game itself , including all the changes made as of today, no Heart of thorns needed, tons of changes!

Unless you choose to play a Revenant and level, then yes you need HoT, otherwise I would take my time and really get to immerse myself. You are going to run across people using the elite specs, maybe that will further your interest in buying HoT sooner than later if you see something you really want and you are already level 80.

No more of a ripoff than any other paid MMO expansion when you’ve already bought the core game…

Well you won’t be playing incomplete class. Specialisation are not more powerful than the core profession and from what we saw, most of them won’t make it into any meta.

I paid the expansion and I know I won’t be playing Tempest and Dragonhunter on my two main character in any mode. I migth be playing Daredevil in sPvP with my thief, but I’m not sure if i’ll stick with it in the long run.

It’s really quite simple, where will you be playing more?

By the sounds of it the expansion would be overkill while your playing catch-up for a month or two in which time you could get it cheap, especially hard-copies which tend to go on sale a month or two after release. Most gaming stores over-stock and flick MMO’s pretty cheap shortly after the buzz has worn off a month or so later.
