You had better put that on your resume. I am sure it will get you that 6 figure job you have always dreamed of, along with a PhD, medal of honor, knighting, Nobel Prize and Fields Medal…. not to mention a purple heart for having played the same game for so many hours.

You definitely have my utmost respect for pushing the same buttons in the same sequence for over 1000 hours of your life. You’re a god among men.

How is gaining something by spending an unhealthy amount of time pursuing it any more impressive than by working in real life and then purchasing it? It’s not. There is no way to gain a legendary that makes it an accomplishment worth noting.

No,

it only means the player:

a) RNG blessed with one or two (i even know the case of 3) precursor drop.
b) Farmer like no other spending hours doing the same thing just to maximize gold
c) Sold gems to get gold
d) Exploited something somewhere before it got fixed.

You don’t need to succeed at this game to have one.

No scenario describes a “True Hero” or an “Adventurer”. Even more, it doesn’t even say that player is good at what he does or successful at the game.

On me, it actually cause a negative effect since it is (generalizing) the kind of players that I think killed the game I was expecting to play when I read the podcasts before release.

the reactions people have(mostly negative) are humorous. that was much was to be expected anyway.

you’d be surprised for every person with a legend that you bash as having no life IRL or cash to gold, sucks in pvp/w3 you’ll find someone with a legend that does not suck in pvp/w3, did not use their cc and has a healthy game to IRL balance.

the amount of trolling and negativity is so potent here. but again, that is to be expected due to our relations and how the internet provides that shielding called anonymity.

would most of you walk up to someone with a 8000USD suit and tell them to their face they suck in any aspect IRL because they have such(in the owner’s opinion because beauty is subjective) a nice shiny material object that it must have taken so much of their real life time to obtain it?

i wonder at how many of you who responded negatively(read: not neutral) would face to face insult someone. highly doubt it. ah the luxuries the internet provides and the resultant degradation of interpersonal relationships…

yes and no.

yes because they are very hard to make and expensive to buy.

no because there are more original and less used skins out there that people could adopt for their character.

You don’t respect someone for wearing an 8000 Euro/dollar suit either, or being rich, unless they’re willing to part with their money for you personally.

You see, most of the world lives in poverty and to them you’re just a walking suit with a full wallet.

There is a HUGE difference between having a 800USD suit and suiting your computer game character with a 800USD suit. And it is there, where you start loosing respect.

I don’t think its players envy what drives the trolling.

I, as a player (around January), was jealous of players with the Dungeon Master tittle. Specially since I had no more friends playing the game and wasn’t very much online to be active with my guild…. but I man up, used gw2lfg; improved my strats and got it. Point is, some things can be achieved by playing the game while others can’t. It’s a negative feeling that can’t be mitigated unless the game rules change.

i didn’t say it was envy. i purposefully left that out because it’s the most commonly used excuse for negativity in regards to other peoples’ belongings.

whatever the reason for bashing other players for their choices in material wealth, you’ll find someone who will 180 degree surprise you in every aspect you chose to deride the ‘majority’ of said player archetype.

and yes, i’m glad you see the irony in my post. not everyone is perfect, but taking a sample from any sub in the forums you’ll see more than 50% are negative posts in relation to others. i guess i don’t understand it since a player with a shiny weapon or a player without one means nothing to me as long as both can do the job equally well.

here, some of you are positing that if someone has a legend, they MUST suck in all aspects of the game other than farming, in addition to sucking IRL.

see how crass that line of thinking can be?

(and yes, me telling people that their thinking is crass is crass itself, but that’s like discussing metacognition- utterly pointless. no need for ironic remarks about irony)

You dont (your money, your rules to spent it, if its legal of course lol).

Defense position:
Only thing i do is avoid legendary users (except for friends that got ones) because since release they are associated to farming, and farmers normally arent exactly the top of pro gaming. As stated before thats the only tag that in my gaming circle is associated to legendary, other case the skins look good lol.

Why i defended (for excluding me of this lol) :
And yeah theres a lot of hate in the thread.

Well, I didn’t thought it required an explanation.

An 800usd suit it is in most cases a necessity for some people who have certain rolls in big corporations, they probably work face to face with important clients so you can understand why an expensive suit is in most cases an investment and not always a luxury.

An 800usd video game sword is… well… plain stupid. Is like watching those magazines and ask yourself “WTH will pay 700K usd for a diamond pen!” well… there is always one.

I believe the thing that annoys people the most is that these “legend” weapons were introduce (and I’m quoting here) as: “They show off your accomplishments and allow you to change your character’s footprints, projectiles, and much more. They’re designed to stand out and show everyone that you are a true master of Guild Wars”

So basically, unless I miss something, being a true master of Tyria means to (insert a to d from my previous post).

What are you guys talking about?

This thread is about items in a computer game labelled as “legendary” and OP is asking if those items have some sort of impressive effect on others

And to answer OP’s question: No they dont impress me at all as I rather feel pity about those poor blokes trying to compensate something.

Now, is this the ultimate truth? Certainly not. But that is my opinion which is what OP wanted to know.

And if it seems that almost everybody in this thread isnt impressed by legendary users, well, I guess Anet missed the goal with that pure time and gold sink…..oh oooh wait.

;)

Now, if somebody would ask me about 800$ suits, be it on the street or internet forum, I would express my opinion about that too.

And there is a difference between asking about someones opinion and going to someone and yelling in their face “you suck”, which nobody does by simply answering a question here.

/facepalm

This won’t end well…

so you’re saying that an 8000USD suit is THE WATERMARK for certain jobs?

so you’re going to agree that a legendary is THE WATERMARK for certain applications?

i’m assuming that both are superfluous…there is no difference, especially now since legendaries will get an auto upgrade to the highest tier in addition to having ooc stat changes….custom features that say…and 8000USD suit can afford, but aren’t necessary?

Nope most seem ugly to me.

Is there any reputation on getting one?

I don’t think so.

Would you go for it for the reputation or for the looks?

Looks, if there was one I liked enough.

If it became harder/easier would you appreciate it more/less?

neither

Not even remotely impressed. Most of them are hideous and I find the special effects obnoxious. To me legendaries are the ultimate “most expensive is best” attitude that leads to people akitteng in Lion’s Arch desperate for someone to be impressed.

I am sometimes impressed by people I see in game, but those who have a cool outfit that actually looks good and is somewhat unique. There are also some achievements that I would be impressed by if they had something attached to them. For example “Dungeon Master” title gets a nod of respect from me.

A legendary though? No, there is nothing difficult about a legendary, just a huge timesink. Either you’ve got too much free time or you’ve got too much spare cash, and whichever you spent your priorities are all out of whack.

Far to common to be impressed by them. I know it sounds silly but I have seen a lot of legendaries around and it does not really feel “legendary”, more like, cool stuff must been quite a grind. But my consept of legendary weapon is thakittens hard to get not just because grind or gold cost is high but you also need to overcome some really hard challenges that really put you as player on real test how well you can play the game. But this never happens in todays gaming since people seem to think that they are entitled to get everything because they paid for game, thus if you wish to have legendary, you just need to grind instead of show off skill.

PS: Just example: Starcraft 2, top 10 best players in the world get legenderies. Yes, it should be that hard.

In all honesty, a legendary holder is either:

1) Had exterme luck with RNG, either with dumping rares into the mystic forge and getting a precursor on half the cost of getting it, or obtaining during a drop/dragon chest.

2) Used real life money.

3) Put aside things in the game and farmed everything to chain events.

4) Farmed Cof 1 for hours on end, for days, for months.

5) Got a precursor (or several) during Oct/Nov then dumped them after december for a huge profit.

6) Combination of above.

In this topic, it doesn’t appear people give much prestige to those who own Legendary weapons… I wonder if said owners will accept that (and so that they effectively wasted their time, if their goal was sorely status), or if they will enter denial mode.

It’s pretty funny how people can judge another based on a few things too, so I think it’s pretty humorous.

And even if someone bought it— well— I still don’t care. I’ve never spent a single penny on the gem store because it goes against my philosophy of gameplay. Chances are I’m not gonna play the RNG roulette and just use the TP via in game gold in 2017, and people would still be clamouring to discredit whatever I did. However, a few hundred dollars is really nothing in the long run. I think it’s a very silly use of money, but if they have it, then whatever. And before anyone goes on some moralistic streak about how several hundred dollars could be donated to starving children in [insert country here], I’d like to remind you all, that you spent about $60 and at least dozens of hours (meaning at least several hundred dollars regardless of what you do if you had worked) on a video game and are using your free time to post from a place that has internet on an activity that doesn’t really contribute anything but serve as ego boosting.

It’s a good thing this isn’t the kind of game where you need to grind through 50 different gear tiers and some would have to p2w.

I am aware that when I get Twilight, some people will give me crap for it. I feel like that is their problem; I’ve made unique outfits, my main GS has been the Greatsaw since last halloween, etc.

I’m getting it because I like the look. If I want a grungier look, I can whip out the Greatsaw. If I want a dark particle effect, I’ll be able to whip out Twilight. There isn’t anything else with that paintstreak effect, and Dawn has a nicer skybox, but I don’t like the sulfur yellow hilt.

I’ll also finish Quip (I like chaos gun as it is so am working on it second), but the reaction to that is always, ‘WHYwould you waste your money?! That’s stupid!’ So picking a lesser-used legendary is no better, you still get sneered at.

This game is almost 1 year old. Legendary can be farmed in 3-4 monthes. Without any luck drop. Just play this game. Everything gives profit here. Events = profit, Dungeons = profit. Www zergs = profit. Even meta events = profit. Whatever u do in this game – u gaining mats and gold. Once u get enough gold – just buy precursor and gather mats.

I didnt care about legendarys cause they just to flashy. But one day i saw bolt and understood, that he would perfectly fit my character sylvary/saiyan theme.

Personally I’m not impressed but I can see why some people want things like that. This is what impresses me:

I really don’t know why legendaries are tradeable. I mean, they made all the karma-costs (karma non tradeable), the world exploration requirements (can’t trade that), the wvw badge requirements (non tradeable), skillpoints (again, non tradeable),… and then you can buy it on the trading post??!

It could have been the ultimate prestige object for people who are dedicated to the game. Now player xy who started gw2 yesterday can spend real cash to buy it instantly… Great.

I am genuinely impressed…

that some people think legendaries in this game are an achievement. Also, calling grinding “work” is like calling in-game chat “hanging out”. It’s only mildly pathetic because of how hilarious it is.

In fact, the only part of GW2 that warrants skillful play is being a good WvW commander.

I would add that the “Forum” mini-game warrants skillful play as well.

I’m none of that and still have a legendary, like 7 or 8 months after release. And I am happy about it. I don’t need to stand in Lions Arch with my healskill on autocast just so other people can validate how awesome my weapon is.

I’m not impressed with legionaries per se, but I am impressed by someone who cleverly and creatively uses armor, dyes, weapons etc to create a awesome looking character. I’ve seen people with legendaries who still look rubbish, because they’re haven’t thought about colour coordination, armour matching etc.

Also if I see someone with more than one legendaries, my reaction would just be ‘get a life man…’
