Do any of you ever buy black lion keys?
Nope, will not spend any real money on gambling. I will only buy stuff that I know 100% what I am getting, and only if it is permanent on my account.
No.
I did early when the rewards were fair, now since they nerfed them with junk, they sit in my bank, 100 or so of them.
I have almost a stack of those useless boxes, and a guildie I was talking to last night has over two stacks just sitting there.
Is there any practical measure we can take from this thread and stick in the Suggestions forum for Anet to ignore?

Not luck and credit cards.”
Why not just sell them on TP if they are useless lol? They are like 3c each, if you have 2 stacks and don’t use why not make some money.

Never have. I have one full stack of chests and am up to about 20 on the second stack.
They did nerf the drop rate on chests a while back, not that anyone actually cares.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I bought 25 keys during the Black Friday sale and got a lot of boosters and tools that I was hoping for to aid in leveling alts. After that I’ve gotten very few keys, and usually through story mode events and once I actually got a drop in the open world.
Why haven’t I bought any more? Because the chest drops recently are absolute kitten. I don’t want unidentified dyes that I can find off of a corpse in the open world, miniscule amounts of guild influence, or bags of coin that are barely worth a few silver.
No. Nothing in those chests is worth real money. It’s nice to get a Black Lion Key as a drop, and I’d be tempted to buy some for karma if I could, but not for real money.
Nope. I think the price is ridiculous and the only thing I’ve ever gotten out of one of the chests that I felt had any value to me is the salvage kits. I just let them pile up and open one whenever I get a key as a drop or story reward.

Bought keys for Consortium? chests, never again.
no, i dont buy black lion keys.
I dont use the gem store for anything but bank and inventory space.
I did bought them ONCE and never bothered again. Tho I still keep a stack of unopened BL boxes in my bank in hopes there will be some other ways to get the keys.
From all boxes I opened so far I got nothing worth mentioning except 1 shoulder skin during Karka event. I’d rather hope to get some item from daily/monthly rewards or map completion on my alts.

I would, if I didn’t know from those keys I get from playing the game that they’re not worth it. There’s also that I don’t really like spending real money on RNG loot, but even without that, I’ve never gotten anything I wanted from chests.
… The contents of the chests is not worth the investment at all.
I did get 5 fine transmutation stones recently. But I realize the chance for that to happen is pretty small. And no, I didn’t buy the key.
Want keys? Kill Skritt! They are the only enemy type I seen drop a key twice on my Guardian. So if anyone drops keys it those “shiny” loving rats.
I don’t buy the keys anymore and I throw away the chests whenever I get them. Just not worth the cost.
No. Nothing in the chest is worth buying. Using the items i get from the odd key drop here or there is fine.

I buy the fine stones and BLKs on the TP gemstore. Everything else, I hope I get a key or leave them there in my bag.
I got hundreds of chests sitting in my bank unopened because I wouldn’t pay for keys. They are far too expensive. If I do wan’t a booster I simply buy one directly so I’m guaranteed one I need but honestly I rather play a couple extra hours to have the same result you get from a booster than fork out lots of money for them and sometimes I’ll get one rarely from the game itself which is enough for me.

No, I have not purchased any black lion keys nor do I ever plan to.
I’m curious.
As it stands it seems to me that the average stuff you get from a black lion chest is no where near worth the price of keys from the gem store.
The only real incentive is the chance of getting one of the permanent contracts or the endless tonic. However the chance of getting these seems so small that I’m not even tempted to dish out loads of gold for a gamble; I can’t help but feel I will be very disappointed.
At the moment the whole black lion key system is pretty unsatisfying. I know ArenaNet need to sell gems to keep the game running, but do many people actually spend them on keys? Would they not sell more gems if keys were at a reasonable price?
I’ve never bought any. It seems to me with the contents of the chest, plenty of the keys drop for my taste. There’s hardly ever anything useful in them anyway so I’ll save my hard earned dollars and golds for something better.

Exactly how I feel!
They should set the price for keys to 10 gems each, that would satisfy everyone. But at the same time, the rewards in the chests would still be the same, meaning less price on keys = not so rewarding items but still acceptable for the price. And then add some real nice items in the shop more expensive.
They are, a remnant from a ton of Korean RPG games, they should have been lost in translation as they’re usually highly abusive and skewed in their cost to reward ratio’s, and no that’s not a “slanderous” claim at the BLT chests, merely that it’s the archetype when it comes to these sort of cash shop items. Sure, you CAN get a permanent “advantage” which is dubious at best, but “coz RNG” you’ll usually just end up making some game publisher rich as heck while throwing your money away, I say keep this kinda thing in casino’s and dodgy websites that advertise on late night T.V. and out of video games where people can get sucked into rolling the dice for cash far too quickly.

I completely agree. I’d pay for more different armor and weapon skins instead. I’m sure I’m not the only one either.
It seems that most people here who said they’ve bought keys decided afterwards they’d never do it again. It could be that keys are priced how they are to make money from newer players who are too curious to find out what’s inside those mysterious chests that keep dropping.
Obviously ArenaNet know how many people are buying keys and will probably make adjustments to the current system if they think people aren’t buying enough. However I would love to see some kind of change. Opening chests with the possibility of permanent contracts is actually pretty fun, but might as well not exist at the current key price and drop rate.
Lowering the price of keys or improving the drop rates of useful items from chests could just make the gem prices rise to compensate. I think they should either increase the drop rate of keys or add some new way of getting an extra key every so often. That way we all get to enjoy opening chests more often, but the people who want to open lots at the same time can still send ArenaNet their money.
Never have, never will. I’m not into throwing my money away.
Only things I’ve ever bought are character slots and skins. I’ll definitely buy makeover kits if they add more appearance options like they did with GW1 when they released campaigns. As it is, Black Lion Chests are like the time I went trick or treating in a rich, elderly neighborhood as a kid. You’re not sure what you’re going to get, but you know the chance of getting anything good is astronomical. At least with trick or treating, you didn’t actually have to pay for the apples, wax lips, and pennies you wound up with.

Black Lion Keys are the greatest ripoff ever.
Black Lion Chests are the second.
IMHO opinion, not worth the gem price. Based on RNG for getting useful items, it’s not worth it. This is just another SINK on ANets part…don’t fall in!
Do not click this link!
I bought 20. Not worth it.
Antherealle – Asura Engineer.
Trucy Millers – Human Warrior.
I only bought some when they had that sale it was a decent deal. If they ever go on sale again I will buy more. Until then I’ll just keep building toons and collecting them from personal story instances.
“…let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die;.”
I suppose its more about if you really want to try them or not. Whether they are worth it or not, if you have the cash and don’t mind a lottery chance to win there’s nothen wrong with it. As for me I think I’ve bought about 25 this month for fun, filled an entire bank section with junk lol Yea I didn’t get a perma item, but I did get useful stuff and overall got all those items cheaper than as if I would have bought separately. In the end it was for fun, and I have the money, so i don’t mind.
I agree with the sale part of some of the posts though, I’d definitely buy more for fun if they had a quick sale.

Have never bought a single key, and have absolutely no intention of spending anything, not even digital cash, for that ridiculous scam. With the occasional free key I’ve yet to get anything that made me feel like it would be something worth gambling gold on.
Kaschen, Engi, Nerfed Spec
Devona’s Refugee, recently arrived to F.Aspenwood
Now and then I will buy a set of 5, but only when a stack of 10 or more boxes are available. This is because a set of 5 keys will normally ‘open’ 8 or more chests for me.
As for what’s in the chest, I hate the tonics, and before the recent changes I was usually griping the cost of keys (since the chests usually had one useless output out of the three). With the tonics mostly removed from the table, I find a group of keys/chests are better now in output. Not enough to get more keys more often, but I’m griping less about the output. In particular, my last round yesterday – 2.5 Gold between coin bags and dyes sold (for 5 keys, 8 boxes).
The rest: what level are the BL harvesting tools? If they’re at least darksteel in equiv I’ll consider using them (wiki implies the axe is ori type, others don’t have an expected level). The others I’m getting some use out of so far, though revive orb was ‘nerfed’ with recent dungeon changes. Have no clue what I’d do with a killstreak booster yet – engineers can’t kill that fast. :-)
I also agree that the cost per key should still drop a little – from 125 to 90-100 (for one) would be better imo. It’s one of the reasons I’ll only buy in groups of 5, and yes I considered that group of 50 the one weekend but decided against it (too tempting).

I bought a few sets of 5 (Gold —→ Gems) during the different holiday events. They’re just not worth it. Now I just roll a Warrior to level 7 and do the level 10 personal quest if I’m bored and want to “gamble” :P
It used to be not too bad. I could still get useful stuff from it (among the crap stuff) like BL chest and fine transmutation stone. But now it gives more crap stuff like boosters and coins.

Yup this is what I do to farm keys. It takes me 30-40 mins and you ALWAYS get a key at the end. Btw if you choose human and middle class storyline you shouldn’t need to lvl up to lvl 7 to do this. I easily farm keys this way beating the lvl 10 quest at lvl 4. Give it a try you just might save yourself some time and get more keys faster.
Oh btw I use guardian instead of warrior but I’m sure you can do this with any class, I used to do it with ranger and it was fine.

Ah nice, I’ll need to try that. I usually pick human, but I always pick the first class storyline. Think the earliest I’ve done it is at 6, maybe I’ll try Guardian from now on too :P
Nah. I get the occasional BLK from Dailies or Map Completion. I use those to open a few chests, just to see what I get. I don’t need to purchase additional keys. The only things I would actually want from the chests are Karma Boosters (which I can buy separately) and a Permanent Makeover Contract (which I could also buy separately, if I had enough gold).
Never have and never will. I have a stack of chests just collecting dust. since day one, I have had 2 keys drop and a couple from completion of story mode. They simply are not worth the Gems for the reward.
Nope not anymore. did at launch a couple times.
What’s sad is that the rewards from these chests are better then the loot in game now.

I have been doing this from when I saw a post about it a while back. I Actually go out and do the first 4 hearts and then start the story. It’s a very good way to get your dailies done as well. Crafting for the dailies also gains a third to half a level when I do it. I just salvage everything I find and refine it all. I also use a Guardian cause he seems to live longer in the level 8 part of the story. If you group, you can skip some of the leveling and it goes faster. Usually takes me an hour or two depending on how fast I want to do it (I never rush cause, to me, it seems more tedious when I do).
Last time I did it I found that I had two keys! Not sure at what point I got the second one though
:D
I’ve never bought them (at least not post-beta, don’t remember whether I did or not with the free gems back then) – same reason as everyone above. If they were 10 gems as was suggested earlier, I might consider it a bit more.
They really should drop more often in-game, though.
Stormbluff Isle ( http://www.stormbluffisle.com )
I have a few times, because the gambler within told me to do so.
It… did not turn out so well.
I have, it’s less about opening the chests as it’s more about just showing the dev team some throw backs for making a good product.
Though I am a bit of an OCD when it comes to video games. It bugs me for them to not be opened.
There’s a pressure to buy them, but so far, I haven’t succumbed to it. I’ve used the keys I’ve obtained (maybe 20-25 in all) and haven’t been blown away by the results. Not enough to spend gems to get more.
Also, it frankly ticks me off that the drop rate for these was made so abysmal, that the gem store is the only option to clearing all the stupid chests that drop. Even after using my keys (and the keys that were obtained from the chest themselves), I still have 167 chests in my inventory. It’s a constant little advertisement to use the gem shop. And it’s also a reason why I haven’t. I hate those kinds of ham-fisted attempts at manipulation.
Ironically, if drop rates for keys were higher, there would be MORE incentive for me to buy them. If I was getting enough keys to come near the chests I was finding, I’d be more inclined to buy the keys I need to make up the difference. Now, when I look at all the unopened chests and work out how many gems would be needed to open them all, I just laugh and shake my head.
I guess this kind of marketing ploy must work on some. Me? It just pisses me off.

they are very bad investment so no.

The common storyline (middle one). Although, they all work ok. Just faster to do the common. If on the lvl 8 part (you choose to defend the orphanage or the hospital) you find that one is killin you too often, switch up. Neither takes longer, but the situation and where the enemies are is different.
nope, they are FAR to pricey & not worth it.
