Do you like dungeons better or open world?
I can enjoy both, but in this game it is an very easy choice. Open World, they have the proper setup that gives you a vision of how Open World can really work for a MMO today. I wasn’t sure if that was just wishful thinking until I played this game.
Dungeons in this game actually are detrimental to it in two major ways, then resources going towards making dungeons better, could be spent adding more to the team making open world better. And it gets people out of the Open World and into the dungeons, putting up silo’s and making Open World feel more barren then it should.
I am also one that feels Zones should be servers, where anyone in GW’s 2 can get to anyone, no matter their Home Server. As Zones hit their max population, then you go to overflows. I think with this mechanic, Open World would always feel very alive.
GW’s 2 falls into the Jack of All Trades master of none, having 4 different paths: Open/Dungeon/WvWvW and sPvP. That alone to me kills their e-sport hopes. I do have a hard time saying sPvP should go…. But I think the game would be better served focused on Open World and WvWvW, I think that is where GW2 magic lies. If culling/performance for WvWvW can’t be fixed, then I could be talked into Open World/sPvP/gPvP.
Open world in general. I still get a kick out of the fact that some NPC’s run towards me, I can almost hear them gasping for breath – “help!”.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
Open world….and WvW, of course.
Have only done CM and AC early on. Never went back. No interest in fractals either.

I prefer open world content. I have yet to do a single dungeon in this game simply because of the lack of group finding tools. Dungeons are gated content. I do not enjoy looking for players to join my party or sitting around while someone else does it. I did plenty of that in other mmos. I do not have a cluster of friends that play mmos or a 500 person guild of ready to go players so content for me has to either be soloable or easy to access.

Would be nice to have a forum thread for each server and the access would be open only for player who are on that respective server.
Open world, mostly because I do not often have a big block of time to play GW, so I tend to avoid group activities or dungeons that require you to pay attention to the computer for 30+ minutes at a time.
Due to children, work, cooking, cleaning, laundry, husband wanting sex etc .. I have to AFK quite often,
There is an open world in this game? Guess there are more definitions than just one.

Open world to me means that an area is open to the public and anyone can join without having to form a group to all appear in the same instance.
Open world wins it hands down.
If anyone played Vanguard, I think they really nailed the open-world ‘spelunking’ to a tee. I really enjoyed exploring and finding massive cave networks with their own loot tables and elite mobs etc (3 dot, 4 dot)
And even though the game never really took off, it was still great fun being alone and smashing through mobs, just to find that next yellow item. Itemisation in GW2 is a separate issue mind you :P
I haven’t explored GW2 fully yet (literally and figuratively) but i’d really like to have some epic caverns to explore that had specific loot (aesthetic style preferably).
I want to add that I really like both. World and dungeons are pretty well designed but I personally dont like lack of holy trinity which make my dung-playing less comfortable. Maybe I dont even know how to play this game, but random hitting boss when u dont even have a time for reaction…full hp > instant death. I hope that anet team will introduce some changes which can make playing dungs more enjoyable
Why not just have both have more open and and dungeons there is room for both. The big problem with open is getting a tag (putting high enofe dmg on the mob) on a mob this is the same problem in many pure open world games such as FF11 where tagging or calming a mob was EVERYTHING in that game.
Are you saying you like dungeons better in GW2?
As far as having more of both, yes please! As long as the massive new content additions we’re hearing about are well done then I’ll feel better about this game.
By the way, I bought this game for the PvP and was pleasantly surprised (initially) about how much fun the PvE has been in GW2. I gotta say I am more pleased with the open world PvE though.
I do like dungeons to a point because its more about communication then a rush and out put massive dmg. Not to say i dislike open events it give you time to talk to new ppl but i must say ppl abused these open events as a “free” way to farm and they tend not to like talking much and play very bot like.
Found this from ff11 i remember camping this guy the time put into this lol and offten not getting claim.
Behold open world at its worst.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Njjox9oII7wlol KB huh. So many kills, so little rings ; ;
You remember MPKing @ Faf? Lol. oh man good times.
I just want to say I love the open world gameplay. I love the whole mystery of whats gonna be back down this cave and this unexplored piece of map. etcetc. The first time I snagged a particular vista in Brisban Wildlands on this waterfall, I stayed up there to look around a bit. It was pretty good view, then something caught my eye below me. Some champion toad just right there! it took about 3 deaths before some reinforcements arrived but we took her down! One of the best experiences I’ve had on this game.
I haven’t done many dungeons. I do love games and events that make u battle through hoardes of trash mobs with the occassional tougher baddy until you reach a cutscene, where a tremendous baddy 30x the size of you comes thrashing through the ground and at that moment, you know you’re in for a fight. I love the strategy, the long fight, the knowing that a single action or lack there of could mean the difference between you and your adventuring acquaintances slaying the beast or being its dinner. The communication in hectic battles like this is awesome. I have played through casual trash mob fights with friends on team speak, and we are all usually joking or chatting just relaxed. But when that end game boss is up and you know it’s going to be a run for your money the gloves come off the game face goes on and everyone gets down to business. I LOVE END GAME LIKE THIS^
Sadly open world in most games where any one can land hits becomes a mindless mass very fast. In FF11 you had to claim the mob to hit it and get items but sitting doing nothing for well over 3hr is not game play its a chat room to see ppl troll each other in.
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)

Dungeons.
Open world is too easy.
Too many people riding on your coat tails.
Open world is only about taging and zerging requires absolutely no skill.
Arah Fotm 30+, requires atleast coordination and not mindless zerging or go kill this for a task or an event.
Dungeons is where things get real and where you skill and ability to adapt comes to play other then dungeons pvp is also awesome.
As a casualplayer i like to play all. But mostly i prefere Open world over dungeons. Not to mention that i rather like the WvW more though. But dungeoncrawler are out there so many. But where do u find a game that leaves the choice if u like to play solo or go with a group up to you? GW2s first attempt how it wanted to be has been almost perfekt. ;-) I think they should return to that.
open world is brain dead. dungeons are fun and challenging for about a month.
Open world, yes i have enjoyed running dungeons, when i was single and my time was my own it was easy to get a couple of uninterupted hours to do nothing but game.
Now i can still manage the same time but it is interupted, i dont think it is fair to ask 4 other people to stand round while i attend to RL maters, BRB Kids trying to shove cat in the oven might be funny the first time but wears out pretty quick.
Open world the worse thing if i go AFK is a repair bill and a waypoint fee im not a problem to any one else.
Yes i was once a basement troll ( ok we didnt actually have a basement)playing 8 hours uninterupted raiding running dungeons back to back then i grew up i guess most of us did perhaps anet needs to remember thier demographic
A loading screen for every zone? That’s not open world
On the other hand a loading screen to every zone doesn´t make the game NOT be Openworld, cause you can still meet people that u did not invite to a group or invited to your limited gameserverspace (like in Diablo3 for ex).
I would it too if it would be like WoW => Whole continent without loadingscreens. But to limited resources of that game i am fine with the way open world works here.
Love the free style of Open World and DE’s (including DE chains) where I can opt in and out at will.
Hate dungeons and linear play.
I prefer open world by far. No pressure, non-linear play, and many more choices of things to do (DEs, general exploration, jumping puzzles, beautiful scenery, etc). Dungeons make for a nice variety once in a while, though, if you can find a good group to run with.
open world. dungeons occasionally for the team coordination and strategy. but getting funneled into one dungeon to grind gear? pretty much made me lose all trust in this company, and theyve yet to redeem themselves. as a result, ive been away from the game. having a blast playing XCOM and BL2 over the last 2 months or so.
open world for sure.
i’ve never been a fan of instances. and even though there’s a loading screen between zones (and overflow instances of zones too sometimes), the zones are big enough, and non-constrictive enough that i still consider this open world. i’m used to daoc, which was the same way.
hopefully they do something to revitalize all the zones that are now mostly empty because of everyone just standing around in the lobby (LA) lfg for the flavor of the month…i mean fractals of the mists.
[TSFR] – Jade Quarry
I prefer the open world content. I hope they will make it more rewarding, because people like better rewards, and this might entice more people to do the major events.
If dungeons were more like the ones featured in Baldurs Gate, or even DDO I would like them a lot more.
But as it is open world content is far more interesting to me, it would be interesting to see a large open-world dungeon featured, why do dungeons always have to be instanced these days?

Ultima Online had dungeons that were not instanced (in September 1997)… damn that game was fun when I played it the day it was released and for a year or so after it…then real life happened…
In this game, Open world.
However, I am an avid dungeon runner in most mmorpg’s I play, so to say open world is more enjoyable pains me a bit. The dungeons are just terribly boring and poorly designed in this game to even enter the realm of entertainment. Grinding is all they are good for.
Open world and WvW for me.
Tarnished Coast since August 2012
I like both, but open world the most. Why? The freedom and the exploration the open world gives. I can group with people, but I am not forced to do so. I can meet random people just like that.

Game over
Open world for me, don’t care for dungeons really
I do enjoy dungeons but so far most are only doing the dungeons to grind out mats for legendary weapons. And fractals has turned into a gearmill grind no thx’s. Open world for me all the way.
My inner hardcore player says Dungeons. Open world stuff is great but it really comes down to how it’s implemented. Sometime’s it feels like such a zerg fest, I like the controlled environment of a dungeon. It tests my (and my groups) skill and my groups compatibility.
If I had to choose, I’d pick Raids above either of these. I really wish GW2 had raids. For me, it’s like a good mixture of Open World’s large scale combat in addition to a Dungeon’s controlled setting. I feel like Open World combat is “dumbed down”. It’s fun for sure but in a more casual sense.
Don’t get me wrong though – I’m not looking for a carrot, I’m looking for a challenge.
I prefer the open world, I find dynamic events really fun and that’s the main draw for me. I’m not kidding myself thinking I’m doing hard content (and I wouldn’t want those events to be hard due to their open and inclusive nature) but that’s what I prefer doing.
As a defense-oriented player I actually enjoyed the tank role, and since the trinity was killed in this game, I have no interest in dungeons beyond story modes. (Which nobody runs anymore.) I’m not complaining or saying they suck, they’re just not what I’m looking for in a dungeon. Call me old school but I want to stay in front of huge bosses. =)
I like the open world far better.
Dungeons to me are very tough, and also have way too many annoying puzzles to solve. I really am not a puzzle person, nor do I like to have to form highly organized parties that must perform all actions to the letter to survive.
I’d much rather do things that are easy, or moderately difficult and fun to me. World vs. World is also quite fun as an open world type of pvp in which anyone can help their world succeed in the battles they find themselves in.
Open world is so much better. They need to incorporate open world dungeon tokens and put in some open world dungeons that require many users to down bosses at the end but put like a 12 hour or 24 hr cooldown on the chest so it can’t be uber farmed and set it up so a chest shows up after the boss dies like the dragons. Throw in a couple jumping puzzles to get through the dungeon. Make it so there’s a meta event to unlock the dungeon, put one in each zone to bring back people to the lower level zones. Now that would be awesome.

Open world! And, thank you OP for asking :-)
thank you for thanking me
not that it is indicative of the entire population but I’m surprised that such an overwhelming majority who have responded favor the open world play over dungeons.
I like to dungeons when I want but the best times I’ve had are running around free in the world and lingering or moving on whenever I want.
and I love the music in this game
Open world. It is why I started playing this game originally. For the first two months, it was the most amazing open world game I had played. Unfortunately it’s this exact reason that I don’t log in anymore. Just like every other wow clone out there, post Nov 15th endgame consists of the majority sitting in towns grouping for instances and then running them. Even on my constantly “full” server, Orr is dead. All of Orr is dead. It’s a crying shame.
Eventually they will grace us non-instance runners with the ability to get the gear… maybe. Long after the dungeoners have gotten their gear, of course, since that is the normal way of things.
