When choosing a profession to play your only choice is a dps’er. Sure there are some professions that have gimmick heals and some that have gimmick tanking abilities, but at the end of the day you are a dps’er. Although the Holy Trinity is gone, I find it amusing that players still try to play the game with a Holy Trinity style…

Every profession is so normalized that it does not matter what profession you choose because you will still have the same old boring trait line in which to put points. And to make matters worse, you have to put 30 points in toughness if you want to survive and compete with other players…

Even crafting has been normalized to the point where there is nothing special about any of the crafting skills. And, since you can learn all crafting skills on one character it makes crafting even less meaningful than other mmos where crafting is a major part of your character’s progression. Again, choice is nothing, but a mere illusion…

Crafting is a major part of my character progression since most, if not all, the gear I make is better than the ones sold in vendors or found in loot.

So you’re one of those guys that completely ignores support and control? You know, those other two roles that make up the entirety of what any player is expected to do in a successful group? If so, stay out of mine.

Yes, every player is expected to do damage. But every player is also expected to control enemies and help their teammates. You can’t pigeonhole yourself in any one role in this game and still expect to succeed.

Here’s some reading for you. Nifty little video for you as well, but honestly, I’d hope you would have seen that before you bought the game. And here’s an article posted by Jon Peters a while ago that explains what to expect from GW2 combat.

I run a condition/phantasm Mesmer, I have 0 point is toughness and I craft my own gear.
I have been told that I am very useful in Dungeons because I can buff you, remove your debuffs, while at the same time kittening the mobs to a crawl- all the while swapping weapons to do some direct damage on the side

I also craft gear for my Guild Mates and the stuff I make is mostly better than anything you can buy – that is what they tell me.
I don’t think you should generalize like that

I’m a shout support warrior, I wear toughness precision vitality gear (power too of course) I know my damage is nerfed from what it could be but I’m also able to take more hits and I can absorb some damage that would kill some of my weaker teammates.

This isn’t a game design problem it’s a community problem.
Why do you think every piece of berserker gear sells for 2-3 gold more than gear with condition damage or toughness on it.

Everyone sees OMG CRIT DMGZ and then they wonder why dungeons own their group of glass cannons.

DPS = Damage Per Second.

Any toon can carry a weapon, therefore any toon can do some amount of damage over a period of time. Everyone is DPS.

Any toon can select a healing skill that works on other players’ toons, and any toon can revive fallen toons. Everyone is a Healer.

Any toon can block attacks from enemies, distract enemies who are attacking other players’ toons, and beef up your ability to stay on your feet with Vitality and Toughness bonuses. Everyone is a Tank.

People insist on following a single role because that is more familiar to them and what is familiar is easier and more comforting than learning new ways of doing things. Likewise the Great Hamster Wheel of Gear Upgrades and wanting to rush through everything so they can brag they were one of the first to kill Mrughmrutugh the Unintelligible in his lair at the end of the last dungeon in the game.

That’s the great thing about choices. If you don’t want to learn a different way to play, or if you can’t handle doing things a different way, there are other games that offer new stuff to do in old ways. This game offers new stuff to do in new ways. Take your pick.

Have to disagree as well.
I am a mesmer and I rarely focus on dps (because as a mesmer, that’s not your strongest point honestly).
There is condition damage to be done, which can be really powerful. I can buff allies, take debuffs away, crowd control enemies, even tank if I need to etc. etc.

Every toon can DPS, sure, but every toon can also do some Support or CC. That’s the whole kitten point.

The thing is being a DSP is easy, its the default role basically. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only role just that you need to but a bit of effort into skill-ing and spec-ing yourself out to fill the other roles.
