Hello,

I would like to start a thread about “Old School” content/feature changes. Guild wars 2 is soon 3 years old and much have changed, I myself really enjoy nostalgic moments and i don’t doubt that the veterans do aswell. Please fill the list with anything you remember, it’s always funny to read!

Do you remember when:

*You could jump down a cliff and dodge the fall damage, or use a leap/charge?
*Rangers pets ran out of AoE?
*Events were really hard almost impossible?
*Shouts were displayed above your head like “STAND YOUR GROUND” in a say bubble?
*Commander tag only cost 100g?
*Precursor were really cheap, like 50g each?
*Gold to gems prices was really low, 6 silver per 100 gems?
*Rangers pets had 4 skills to be actived on demand?
*You could use kites and toys in WvW?
*Lion arch was the player hub and not destroyed?
*Bleed stacks didn’t have a limitation?
*The login screen looked like this
https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/46385/gw003.jpg
*First beta weekend were impossible to attend because you only got disconnected?

That’s all i can remember at this very moment, i will update as soon something comes to mind!

I remember when I could weapon swap at level 7.

And I remember when we had to use our skills in order to learn them.

And I remember when dyes were per character and dropped regularly off mobs.

I remember when….

….during Beta in the WvW zones, rams could destroy walls. This would lead to a group building 3-6 rams next to a wall and just sitting there pummeling it.

….when fireworks could be used in WvW.

….when the biggest “destruction” to Lion’s Arch was the Lion Fountain that had been attacked twice.

Do you remember when:

*You could jump down a cliff and dodge the fall damage, or use a leap/charge?
-Yup. And death shroud too.

*Rangers pets ran out of AoE?
-No. That was ever a thing?

*Events were really hard almost impossible?
-No, They were all swarmed with people, made them trivial. Unless you mean 3 months after that when everyone left.

*Shouts were displayed above your head like “STAND YOUR GROUND” in a say bubble?
-Yup

*Commander tag only cost 100g?
-Yup

*Precursor were really cheap, like 50g each?
-No. They jumped to 100+ within a couple days of release.

*Gold to gems prices was really low, 6 silver per 100 gems?
-Oh yes. I still have a gem stockpile form those days.

*Rangers pets had 4 skills to be actived on demand?
-I wish I didn’t.

*You could use kites and toys in WvW?
-Never did wvw.

*Lion arch was the player hub and not destroyed?
-I just got back. Wait, what?

*Bleed stacks didn’t have a limitation?
-No, never. It’s been 25 since at least beta weekend 1.

*The login screen looked like this
https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/46385/gw003.jpg
-I don’t… was that pre-beta weekends? Or was I too busy logging in to admire it?

*First beta weekend were impossible to attend because you only got disconnected?
-Only for a while. After a couple hours it was fine.

That’s all i can remember at this very moment, i will update as soon something comes to mind!

I’ll add one that marks me as a true GW2 bittervet.

Do you remember when ANET though that GW2 pvp could become an e-sport?

I remember when i could jump off a cliff, and then use Guard Greatsword 3 to super jump even further.

I came back to the game after a break and found out I could use nothing while jumping, so jarring and weird.

Do you remember when pets died instead of being defeated? They has to be rezzed like any dead player. If not rezzed, people ran around dragging their dead pet behind them.

Or when the skill, Ride the Lightning, was incredible?

*Pre-nerf BWE when enemies featured dodge or die mechanics. For example, people dying to a Moa’s peck, an Ettin’s smash or that drake event tail swiping half of the zerg.

*The rally tutorial that assumed you would figure it out

*Rangers pets ran out of AoE?

All enemies ran out of AoE, which was somewhat exploitable because you could get your target to constantly run away. It was also very annoying playing as a class with only AoEs.

Lol. I had forgotten about that

Mesmer portals: they didn’t used to have an accept option. If a Mesmer dropped a portal on you, you ported. In Beta, Mesmers used portals to port people who were afk in a safe spot to an unsafe one. They also teamed up and laid portals in front of the gate between Hoelbrak and Wayfarers so that people couldn’t get through it.

I like the account-wide drops better… But they didn’t have to remove them from dropping.
I can’t fathom how boring it must be for new players not to have access to half as many dyes as old ones… Or simply having to shell out a ton of gold for some good ones. (incidently there’s some dyes now for 1g or more that used to cost a couple silver, stullf like midnight fire, which i had like 1 for each of my leather chars for like 20s, now costs 14g, sad days).

Oh, when i tell people that i bought 3 character slots for like 20 gold…

Oh, well, clearly you’ve misunderstood this fine poster’s point, and are not being intentionally obtuse, because the run and idle animations of female characters have been changed, and town clothes used to be a thing that people could customize.

I remember when we had massive, exciting, open world events. Scarlet attacks, Marionette, Tower of Nightmares… even helping the refugees was a neat thing. I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of all of those things with the shift to the story journal. I wish there could be some sort of balance between them. I LOVE my “Avenger of the Dispossessed” title.

I remember when I loved leveling up. By level 20, I could get a feel for most professions.

I remember the first time I won the Sanctum Sprint: It was on a Charr, when the content was brand new.

I remember when I thought 1g for 100 gems was outrageously expensive.

I remember when achievement point reward chests were first introduced, and you got a new one every day, until you were caught up. I also remember when they included PvP skins.

I remember when Anet released the flamekissed light armor in the gemstore and how they came to realize it was a poor decision to have released cultural armor that way and, instead of ignoring it, they owned up, apologized, and fixed it. Not everyone was happy about it, but it was the right call.

“Be angry about legendary weapons, sure, but what about the recent drought of content?”
-Mike O’Brien
Because we can’t be angry about both?

I remember when Simin in Arah path 4 was so hard that even a full zerker group (which was rare at that time) with slaying potion, food and time wrap had an almost impossible mission to kill her. That stealth regen tho.

I remember when the regen on the Effigy in CoF path 1 was so intense that we had to poison him and kill the crystals in order to kill him. From a hard boss, to a joke in one path.

I remember when the burrows in AC path 3 were almost impossible.

I remember when you could do have half of CM by running on top of the dungeon and drop below directly at Victoria in path 1 and the final boss in path 3.

I remember TA forward/up.

As to GW2… I remember…

  • Farming for rare drops with MF food because I couldn’t afford to buy them.
  • Someone in BWE1 giving away a green drop after Shadow Behemoth.
  • Waiting for the end event for BWE1 in Wayfarer Foothills, watching the endless stream of chat messages praising the game to high heaven.
  • More BWE1 … fighting the Champion Corrupted Oakheart in Queensdale and thinking what an epic battle it was (ditto the Fire Shaman in PoA)
  • Not being able to move much while fighting mobs in Orr without aggroing adds due to high mob density
  • When the Plinx chain would barely have finished and was available again
  • When Ascalonian Catacombs Story Mode was harder than AC Explorable

I totally remember the pre DR pre Anti-legit farmer nerf that came just before the Ascended announcement in 2012! Man that was an awesome economy. You could actually go and get the things you needed without fear of a boated gold standard, you could purchase the things you needed without endlessly farming gold or trying to flip the market on something. This was of course prior to the Island event that gave too many people multiple precursors as well you see, I’m always amazed at how few people actually remember that event or those posts that kept happening in these forums every time they’d delete them, they kept going, the posts about the loot issues with DR that have once again started up again.

Remember when you actually saw other players in all of the zones and the world seems filled up instead of constantly getting the request to change “channels”

Fire Elemental Bridge of Death.

“GET OFF THE BRIDGE!”

The original Fire Elemental was the most horrifying encounter I ever had in a video game. The night it glitched and wouldn’t die was the stuff of nightmares.

I remember when I stacked magic find on my armor.

I remember when Tequatl was soloable.

I remember when people believed Tequatl was impossible.

I remember when we thought Precursors were insanely expensive at 20g… Not entirely certain, but they might have even been cheaper than that.

I agree. I like being able to replay the story instances with other characters at my leisure…. but I do so miss the massive world battles.

I remember my server banding together the first night of the Scarlet Invasions.

I remember the single night of victory my server had against the Marionette, and how it would have never happened for us had they not extended its availability.
