I think I used this when I first started playing, but after a while I developed a routine of sorting items that are better off vendored (instead of sold on Trading Post) in the lower left corner of my bag. I also store items that I would possibly bank or use as an alternate weapon etc in the lower right corner of my bag. Finally, I have all my salvage kits, spare gathering gear and other consumable in the top left of my bag.

I honestly wouldn’t even dream of pressing the compact button now, because it would screw up my system.

So I’m curious about other players. How do you deal with inventory management?

one simple answer: invisbag doesn’t have anykind of reaction to compact button. I have all the needed items there (weps, minis, extra set of harvesting tools) and then I have salvage kits and few other in the first slots of inventory which is kind of safe zone from compact too. Also I regularly check if I have anything valuable via TP sell window and all items I wanna salvage I do immediatly, so only things in my inv are prettymuch vendor items all the time

I use an invisible bag to carry spare armor and weapons and sometimes a mini.
The bag that collects trophies, sometimes the bag for crafting materials.
As smallish bag that has my salvage kits, gathering tools and event stuff like tokens and food
And then a huge bag for loot right at the top

I don’t merge the bags

I use it every time I open my bag.
Actually, I use this:
1 Invisible 18 slots bag > To all items that I don’t even want to dream to sell acidentally. Or for depositbles, that I don’t want do deposit (Crystals).
1 Starter backpack > For general equipments, and consumables.
1 20 slot Uncommon box > Here I hold all green itens (These ones I don’t salvage like the other, so I organize they here to sell)
1 20 slot Rare Box > All rares come here , so I can salvage for ectos.

I use the compact everytime, only to organize itens on each open slot properly. Is very good for me.

I use an Invisible for my gathering tool backups, salvage kits, potions, food, etc.
I also use a trophy bag that holds my spare or “being saved” armor and weapons.

Everything else is up for sale and gets compacted frequently.

I use the compact feature regularly. As others have mentioned I have many different types of bags including

Two invisible bag slots that I use for things like tonics, merchant express, repair canisters, mini-pets, and other non-essential items that I like to keep on my character. These are the bottom two bags in my slots since I don’t need to access them often.

Two equipment slot bags so that all the weapons and armor I fall there. In the first two slots I keep my salvage kits for salvaging rares I don’t want to sell. This is also nice when I go to sell since the weapons/armor are listed together in the sell menu.

One craftsman bag so my crafting materials will get sorted.

An oiled slot bag so my junk items get sorted. The oiled slot bag has inexpensive salvage kits in the first two slots so that I can salvage any salvageable junk items.

Finally, I have one normal bag which is just for overflow, and my starter bag which has my food and siege for wvw.

Its all kept neatly sorted without any real work, and I can still use the compact feature.

Yeah, I usually do it after I deposit collectibles.

I always keep an invisible bag and an oiled bag (vendor trash) on each character. Compact does not work on those (though I wish it would compact within the bag at least).

On some of my earlier characters I also have a craft bag, but I don’t bother with that now, and may just replace it with a regular bag on the characters that do have it.

There is nothing worse than accidentally pressing the compact feature when you have your own sorting. It have happened to me a couple of times and it only frustrates me when I have to spend 10 min to sort everything again.

In general I use a safe box (armorsmith equivalent to the invisible bags) as the last one on my inventory, I keep things there I won’t sell like weapons, minis, salvage kits, spare gathering tools, and so on. Consumables that I might use at anytime (food, boosts I don’t put in bank, express bank, merchants, etc) go on the first bag starting from the first slot. Everything else lands between those two areas.

That way I can use compact (and I use it often) without altering where I have my stuff. My one gripe, though, is anytime I switch from a set with 2 1h weapons to a 2h one using the hero panel (something I do with my guardian, usually to switch between scepter-shield to staff), the main hand weapon lands neatly where the 2h used to be, but the offhand one lands elsewhere in the inventory and I need to open it to move it to the safe box.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.

I would highly recommend at least an invisible bag as your last bag. This removes any possibility of an accidental sell (or worse, salvage), plus if you want to carry a collectible and not deposit it (such as a mini-pet), you can place it in there and it won’t go with deposit all.

There is no “un-compact”.

Your only option is to squeeze everything up and left.

i have the starter bag, another 15 slot bag, a 15 slot crafting bag, a 15 slot oiled bag, and a couple 15 slot safe box or whatever they’re called. Obviously all the loot starts to pile up in the first two bags, junk goes to the oiled bag first, when i salvage items and gather crafting components go to crafting bags. The safe boxes at the bottom don’t deposit or compact so down there i keep all my food, boosts, tonics, swappable gear, etc. all bags hidden so it’s one big giant bag to my eyes. Works very well.

I’ve thought about it but I don’t really need it. I’m used to managing my inventory this way. I have the items I want to keep, followed by my breakdown kits, so there is always a buffer and I know never to touch the first few items.

Works for me.

I use the compact button pretty much every single time I’m done with a bout of combat.

Then again, I also use different types of bags to autosort my stuff in the first place.

  • Starter Bag is where I hold things like food, WvW blueprints, one-use Black Lion items, and my salvage kit
  • Invisible Bag is where I put my alternative gears and things I don’t want to go to the collectibles (Quartz Crystals and Sprockets)
  • Craftsman’s Bag for all the mats I get
  • Equipment Box for all the gear I get
  • One normal bag for stuff that doesn’t fit into either of the two above (or when they get full)

In total, I have 92 bag slots. My next inventory upgrade is going to be a new bagslot with an Oiled bag for all the trash loot.

Yes I still use the compact view. I have tried having it all open but I just don’t like it. Probably because every time I bank or use a shop I like to have my inventory open so I can see everything that needs to be deposited/sold etc.

My system works well because in the first bag slot I have a 12 slot box that does not deposit, sell or move around anything in the inventory. For this box I keep all weps my char can use and any mini’s I may want them to have out. This box is PERFECT for this.

At the very bottom I have a 12 slot bag that only takes vendor trash. You know the “sell junk” type. Again this bag is perfect as I NEVER have to see this junk in my inventory and it makes looking through all of my other stuff really easy.

The 2 slots above my junk bag I have 2 20 slot boxes from fractals and the other slots above that I have random bags from events, the starting bag and random 12 slot bags I think. These 5 bags I can search through easily to find anything I’m looking for. I always sell all Blues and Greens I get anyway so I have no need to separate those or keep them sorted in any particular order.

When my bags start to get full I just send collectables to the bank and that usually clears up a lot of slots. If my bags are still too full no problems just hit a shop nearby and I’m sorted.

Total I think I have some 137 slots or so.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Yup. In fact its habit for me to hit ‘deposit collectables’ followed immediately by ‘compact’ to clean up my space. I also remove the bag breaks so it looks like all 1 giant bag. I know my last 16 slots are invis, so I put things I want to save there and I spread my window out so that there is 8 ‘pockets’ in each row. I can usually flip through and clean my inventory pretty quickly.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

The compact button is a land mine for me. I will occasionally hit it by accident when depositing collectibles (which I use all the time), resulting in having to completely reorganize my bags. I wish there was an option to have it removed from the menu.

I keep it compacted all the time. I don’t usually lug around certain things that need organized and when I do I use specialty bags. Depositing all collectables and compacting the items makes it easier for me to see most recent loot if my eyes don’t catch them on the right of the screen when looted.

I compulsively compact my inventory every time I deposit collectables or sell items. Makes it easier to see how much space I have left, and (for the most part) keeps the stuff I’ll probably end up salvaging / selling at the bottom of the bag instead of just mixed around. That way instead of having to search my entire inventory when salvaging, I just start at the bottom and work my way up, and once I hit stuff like kits or food I know I can stop.

I do keep 2 invisible bags on each character (and said invisible bags are always at the bottom of my bag slots) and I keep all my weapons, armor, minis that I’m actually using, and so on in those. Recently I also keep a stack of Quartz in there on each character for daily Charging. That way I know I’ll never accidentally sell or salvage my good gear.

I use it all the time, I just have standard 18 and 20 slot bags. I like to have my stuff in organized order of acquisition. I put all of my gear and boost at the top, When my bags fill up I deposit my collectibles, compact inventory, vendor junk, compact inventory, vendor all greens, blues, and whites, compact inventory, recycle all yellows, deposit collectables, and TP the runes and sigils and compact whatever is left.
