Dear Arenanet,
I have been playing MMORPG’s since the early days of EverQuest. I was always amazed by the games and enjoyed communicating with GM’s as they would cause different events to happen in game. After playing for a couple years I decided to talk to a GM to find out what it would take to become one I was able to become a GM my first attempt and continued to do it for a few years until the release of WoW and the great decline of EQ. I have dealt with Exploiters bots Hackers and many other problems and issues with players always with respect. I was wondering if you had any plans for volunteer based GM’s and if so where can I apply. Thank you,

EverQuest canceled their player Guide service due to the fact that it was a colossal failure. I was a part of the guide program as well and remember it being a horrible mess of players who felt that their magical GM powers made them more important than anyone else. It was awful.

Considering the fact that few, if any, games have offered such a system since EverQuest, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever see it come back.

I am reluctant on anything that gives that much power to a player. It never ends well. I’d rather have actual employees doing their jobs, it is much more professional as well.

We don’t need this. The system would be abuse in no time.

EQ still has player based GM’s also the people that abused the power never lasted long they would always mess up by giving themselves items on their play account or something stupid like that. I can not remember it ever being a mess on the server I was a GM on we had a great staff of about 10 people we all communicated well and it was very fun.

EVE Online still has a similar program, called the ISD (Intersetellar Service Department) program. It works rather well; of course, the members have no GM powers at all. They moderate certain official chat channels and forums, they answer questions and offer advice to new players (something vital in EVE, not so much in GW2), and they reach out to community members and spread the word of community events. Got a huge space battle planned? Let the ISD know so they can report on it and tell everyone what happened.

It does two things: it takes some pressure off of real GM’s because the volunteers will do the basic day-to-day moderation, and it helps the game universe in touch with what’s going on (EVE is single-server, all 400k people interact, so this is pretty significant). I can see some aspects of it working in GW2, others not so much. If any of them had real GM powers though, the results would be disastrous.

I doubt it, maybe some kind of moderators, but not GM’s.

If they do not institute some way for players to help they are never going to get rid of the botters and gold sellers just make it if say 200 plus people report someone as a bot or gold seller their account is locked till a review or an appeal is submitted. The bots are getting way out of hand the fact I have been leveling up and seem to see the same bots leveling right with me and out leveling me is rediculous these accounts are going to ruin the game what the botters are doing is mass leveling 5-10 accounts at one time and they will end up selling the accounts through Ebay or something like that and it will destroy this game and economy. Something must be done a play based moderation could fix the issue. Within a month this multiboxing bots would be gone gold farmers and sellers would be extinct and the game might become fun again.
