Warrior – Head strong, faces problems head on.
Guardian – Strong will and supportive
Thief – Rebellious with some issues with authority
Ranger – Keeps their distance from people
Engineer – Inventive or pyromaniacal or dopers (talking about elixers)
Mesmers – Cunning and manipulative
Necromancer – A taste for the macabre side of life
Elementalist – Not sure how to describe this one lol.

What do you think, does your main profession match your personality?

Nope.

I play whichever has the right sort of gameplay.

I started with Guardian but it got boring, so I’m now playing my ranger.

Given that “supportive” and “keeps their distance from people” don’t exactly go hand in hand, I don’t think my personality was involved.

Classes in games are generally created about the different types of individuals who play games. You can actually tell a lot about a person simply by looking at which profession he/she players, or rather, how he/she is playing that profession. For instance, a person who doesn’t have a lot of patience, will stick to professions that look easy to play, or pick a playstyle give fast results without much work. A sympathetic person will pick a profession that can give a lot of bonuses to allies, or have a playstyle that involves a lot of reviving and healing. And a profound person will pick a profession that can have a lot of potential roles, or have a playstyle that offers many different roles, or simply play all professions. So if you’re going to write a phycology essay, then MMO gaming is a good topic =)

And yes, my profession fits with who I am as a person. I play a Ranger, and I mostly stick to myself while playing the game, as I find people tend to be more of a distraction in games then anything ells. I only start talking more with people after a few months of playing. But I’m also a sympathetic person, so I tend to have at least one support skill equipped, and I often fall into a support role when playing dungeons.

I play completely different classes in different MMOs, even in the same ones.

I play tanks, healers, DPS, CC, and pretty much any kind of char.

I don’t see it being linked to my personality at all.

Funny you should mention this. In all the games I have ever played I always played a character that would fit my personality in real life. For some reason it just don`t feel right playing anything else to me.

I’m an engineer. I like to be able to sit back and control fights while providing utility for my group. This has led me to play many magic-using classes in the past but engineer fits the bill pretty well.

I was hoping engineer would be more like the Heroes of Newerth hero “Engineer”, but .. maybe someday.

I love big weapons and smashing faces but for some reason I could never stick with a melee class for too long.

Ranger – Keeps their distance from people

Because rangers always use bows right?

I picked ranger because I picked elementalist first and it was fun for a while but the class is simply not viable. When I rerolled, the community didn’t know yet that warriors are the best class so I went with the safe pet class bet. Can’t be bothered to reroll warrior now.

Maybe a little. I’ve always played the Assassin class as IRL I’m more quite, serious, and when I speak it’s usually wise words. As a person I’m a natural protector, Which is why I also call myself Auron.

I agree to a point classes are usually picked – but really, your favorite class and the play-style you use determines the personality of the player. My engineer for example is all about control and keeping at range. As well as burning things and explosions. lots of burns. Lots of Explosives.

I always use plan C4 first.

Engineer as my main, I also like my Ele and Ranger quite a bit. I mostly played Eles and Rangers in GW1. I don’t usually like playing melee classes, but I’ll switch to melee on my ranger from time to time.

I’m a quiet person. I like to help others, but I don’t tend to have a lot of patience for their company.. at all. It doesn’t mean I’m necessarily a jerk (not usually), but I’d just rather be by myself.
That’s irl. I do like playing with others in GW2, but on my own terms, and as an Engineer, I like that I can explore and survive without having to rely on anyone.

FYI you’re more likely to have fun playing the class you like, not chasing the FotM class.

I play rangers because I’m lazy, I’d rather the monster run to me instead of me running to them. By the time they get to me they are close to dead anyways, so I don’t have to run to far to grab the loot they drop either. I’ve also tried mage type classes, but I don’t really like them.

I’ve played a lot of RPGs over the years and gotten a fairly good idea of my playstyle and found that (because I have a tendancy to try and play a certain way regardless of what my character is built for) picking a class that suits my style makes the game easier and more fun for me.

I like characters who use dexterity or speed to avoid getting hit more than ones who rely on heavy armor or magical shielding or whatever to absorb blows and I like to have a variety of options open to me – most of the time I’ll stick to straight damage from a weapon but I want to be able to add other effects, either through magic or conditions or whatever for tougher battles. So I usually play one of the “middle of the road” classes rather than one purely focused on one aspect.

I also like animals so I tend to be drawn towards pet classes. So for example I play a ranger, druid or sometimes cleric in DnD, rogue with ranger specialisation in Dragon Age and a ranger in GW1 and 2.

IMO my personality tends to come into it more in defining my characters personality. I’ll usually do what I think is right when asked to make a choice in games (which isn’t always the “good” option). Although having used the same one for several years and role-played her to varying degrees she’s got a pretty clearly defined personality of her own. Most of the time we agree but sometimes I find myself thinking “No, wait, she wouldn’t do that.”

But then I also never have just one character in a game. I’ve got 3 others in GW2 and I’m thinking about making a 5th and possibly buying more character slots after that. In GW1 I had 4 rangers who I used for different purposes, in GW2 so far they’re all different professions (ele, engineer and thief, the next will be a guardian) so I’m not sure what that says about me.

I don’t think personality has much to do with my choices. For instance, going by your ideal of what each class personality would be, I’m a walking contradiction because my three favorite classes are ranger, guardian and mesmer. I really can’t tell you which of the three I like better.

I feel you’re looking too much into the THEMATIC side of professions and not so much the PLAYSTYLE of them.

I know for one that glass cannons aren’t my style. That’s the reason why I went for Necromancers first and then Guardians.

Well perhaps on some very vague level, but I think it’s more just a matter of personal preference, though of course that’s shaped by our real lives. I like cloth wearer classes so I’m generally drawn to the scholar archetype. I’m quite bookish in real life and not very impressed by big acts of machismo lol, so maybe you’re onto something. Put it this way, I’ve never played a warrior to level cap in any MMO, I’ve just never enjoyed the class.

But then again, the reason I play MMOs and RPGs is escapism – to get away from being me for a while. So I’m never looking for something that somehow reflects me in some way. I’m a roleplayer at heart, so that’s really not the objective. The opposite actually.

As shown in my own example 2 posts above, I see how my personality relates to my profession choices.

But this said: that list the OP made… it makes absolutely no sense to me. I find it too superficial to be any guideline at all in this matter.
Not saying the OP is superficial, his list is. To me. Feel free to disagree…

The basic question posed though, I find rather interesting.

What do you think, does your main profession match your personality?

Guardian – supportive and protective of others – impatient
Thief – likes to have multiple options to approach and deal with situations – lacks focus
Ranger – deals with multiple problems at once – has difficulty being alone lol
Engineer – deals with problems pragmatically – focuses too much
Mesmers – Cunning and manipulative – complicated and rarely reaches their full potential
Necromancer – likes to be contradictory and exert control on situations – lacks offensive power
Elementalist – likes to be supportive and offensive at the same time – has issues with untimely death

Irony…. xD
