Q:
This is a serious question. Can anyone confirm if magic find is actually working, and has any effect what so ever?
I bring a guildbanner MF boost to most Fractal runs, which only amounts to about a 20 MF boost. But of course now with Southsun Cove we have a buff of 200 MF, and I notice no difference what so ever. My drops are exactly the same with a MF of 240, as they are with a MF of 20.
Can anyone confirm if MF does anything at all? Or have we been trolled all this time?
I can’t bring you exact numbers, but i see a huge difference.
With no MF at all (Full berserker gear) on Southsun i get a lot less Blues and greens than i get with MF ~ 400.
I’ve got 7 Rare lv75-80 gear with MF in 1 hour of farming (Drakes and Karkas). This is not usual with no MF).
To be fair, yes i see differences, but i can’t quantify!
/cheers
Anecdotal evidence says it does.
There is currently a group from the wiki who are trying to quantify it into real numbers, but I expect that to take some time. Personal evidence for me was Southsun in it’s current iteration. Six or more rare drops in under two hours from mob drops with around 300% mf.
Sure the is difference but you recognize it after longer time. Try it for about 6 hours and you will see.
It certainly feels like it makes a difference.
When using my warrior with explorer armor with pirate+noble runes and opal trinkets I was getting a lot less of the whites than my engineer who is using all rampager.
The t6 drops actually do not seem to be as good of an indicator. They still seemed to drop at a decent rate when I was running around with 0MF trying to test the GF buff(it sucks -_-).
For something less vague than “it feels like …”, I was killing dredges with a friend for a few hours the other day, I had around 129% MF and she had around 180% MF. She ended up with around 30% more Heavy Miner’s Bag. The numbers were still too small to be definitive but a 30% difference in loot from a 40% difference in MF does seem significant.
You do understand how MF works, right?
For instance, if you have 100% magic find, and the original drop rate of an item is 1%, then this drop rate is augmented by 100% and is now 2% (1% + 100% of 1%).
So while augmenting drop chances, you still need to win that luck roll ;-)

Magic Find don’t work like that xD
It works like this:
“Everytime you kill a monster you roll on a number of tables, inside these tables are different rarity categories. Magic find increases the chances you will get higher categories. For example if there is a 1 in 10 category, and you have 200% magic find you will have 3/10 chances to get that category. This improves not just the rarity of the items you get but can also improve your chances at getting trophies and rare crafting materials like lodestones.” – Izzy

If you think about it, LHound, it’s the same that what I said… just expressed differently

The conclusion is perfectly valid, but the example is not! A lot of people thinks that the MF will give a plain boost to the item drop chance and that’s not correct!! +100% MF don’t double that particular item drop chance!
A more valid example should be:
- There are 10 loot tables. Within that 10 tables the same item has a rising probability of dropping. Increasing MF will boost the chances of getting to roll on higher tables. Therefore there will be an increasing chance of dropping the item with increasing MF. How much MF there is needed to do so, remains a mystery!
What we know is that the item drop chance is a combined probability between the table roll and item chances in that particular table!
A solid amount of luck is nevertheless needed to drop the best items.

learn numbers, do some research. Or just post mindless threads, thats cool too. sounds like u havent been playing long yet. hope you find out why FRACTAL RUNS with 20% mf are “different” than Southsun Event train w/ 240%. HMMMM
sorry to troll, my newborn kept me up all night. Anyways, you have some serious homework to do on Random Number Generation. Good luck n Have more fun.
I’m not sure if this has been said, but you can’t take the 200% mf you get from Southsun out of Southsun. So you end up using the same amount of mf in the fractal.
I feel like it makes a difference. Using 115% magic find in fractals, usually means I come out with three to six rares, where other players might only find one or two rares. The same goes for cores.
Kasama – That’s very selfish.
MF in dungeons is a no no in mine and most other people opinions.
I bet you rage when things go wrong too. Some people are beyond help.
@OP -
As has been said by others having a high percentage of MF does not mean you are going to see rares and exo dropping left right and centre. But in the instance of farming ( be it Cursed shore or Karka farming ) – you will, over time, see a noticeable distance. I have been running Southsun with around 350% MF for the last couple of days and I would say an average hour nets me 10-15 powerful blood, 50 – 80 potent bloods, 4-8 rares along with the usual blues and greens.
Signing off.
Yes it does.
Not that noticeable with ~100 MF. But with 350+ MF, I get around 1:10-1:15 blue to green in southsun.
I noticed a difference in SSC doing Champion Insurgents for about an hour and a half last night. The first few events I had the gold buff to get the Consortium achievement. When I got that I switched. After I switched I got two rares from drops. Normally, I can go weeks without seeing a rare — except from meta chests. One of those two drops was from a Champion, and I cannot even remember ever seeing anything better than a blue from a Champion.
Total non-crafting material drops from 25 minutes in Southsun with 254% MF:
1 white Glove
1 white Shoulder
1 blue Helm
1 blue Pants
1 blue Shoulder
2 green Daggers
1 green Staff
1 exotic Jacket
Miniscule sample size, and the exotic was the first I’ve seen in ages, but the numbers seem about average if the exotic is replaced with a rare.
