I notice my screenshots are far higher detail than my actual in game view (even with everything maxed) is my mind playing tricks on me, or does the game upscale screenshot detail?

No, actually it downscales the detail unless you have the bmp flag in your launch options.

Maybe you like compression artifacts.

Perhaps the unsharp mask is making the trick. Suggestion: PNG lossless image format. Bmp is so old and unsupported.

You can get the game to take lossless bmp images with command line arguments. Produces much better screenshot at the expense of larger file size.

Or you can have an external program like FRAPS for screenshots.

As others have said, you pass -bmp to the game to make lossless screenshots. Yes its true that this format is old, but that does not matter, any image program will open it and convert it to PNG (or higher quality JPG than the game produces).
