A few question about Charr, for those of us who actually like the race-

Q1: What age does a Charr cub leave the Fahrah?

Q2: During their training in the Fahrah, how is a Charr’s profession decided? What would prompt a cub to be given training in spellcasting, when spellcasting is not particularly liked in Charr society? Or does the Farah merely give Charr a basic military training and they then leave and decide which profession they want to specialise in?

Q3: Any chance of getting a vague idea where the Ash Legion Homelands are? We know about Blood’s, Flame’s and we can assume Iron’s is Ascalon. What about Ash?

Thanks. Hope you reply to these.

Question 1
We know the big Iron Legion developements came from appropriating Dwarf gunpowder technology. Furthermore we also know that the Iron Legion under Smodur is the legion which is politically the most progressive legion in their view of other races. It was the Iron Legion which pushed for a treaty with Queen Jenna.

Therefor I was wondering if the Iron Legion was also willing to learn about the technology of other races. Specifically I was thinking about the sound-based technology of the dredge, the blacksmithing of the norn and even the clockwork technology of the humans. Would they consider improving their own technology through cooperation and learning from others or would they be too proud?

Question 2
Is it true that most of the renegades are from the Blood Legion and is Bengar secretly supporting them and trying to undermine the peace treaty? How do the charr in the Blood Legion in general feel about the treaty?

 • Are the Asura really that much smarter than the other races, or is it just a matter of valuing intellect more and emphasizing that direction as they grow up?
 • How long before the game started did the events of Edge of Destiny take place?
 • Why are a bunch of Sons of Svanir allowed to live more or less in peace in Hoelbrak?
 • Where does the grawl tribe that didn’t trust the Consortium plan to make its permanent home, since they refused to go to Southsun?
 • Do Sylvari appear to age over time, or do they always look the same as the day they awakened? Are there signs that the Sylvari will one day die of old age, or are they probably immortal unless killed?

I know this isn’t directly law but the little conversations people in have in Lions Arch and other areas that hint about what these people may do in the future (such as the human girl and charr cub who decide they are going to join the ash legion and change the rules so that humans can join) will they ever be fully fleshed out so that we may see them in the future?

Sorry if the question is hard to read, i am really bad at wording what i want to say.

I want to link this here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1usdvw/unanswered_ls_questions/cem52d7?context=3

It’s a huge list of unanswered questions from the living world, since The Lost Shores until The Nightmare Ends. It’s way too long to be posted here, but I will copy it here if you want to.

The link is interesting because it has interaction with one of you guys (ArenaNet), who answers a couple of the questions. This happened a few hours before the Dolyak Express started.

Hi! Thanks for the topic ^^
As a roleplayer, I have many questions about GW2 lore.
I will begin specifically with Charrs seen that I’m in a Charr RP guild and we’re not alone.

How Charr’s pregnancy work (biologically & socially)?
Is it more like tiger (2-3 kittens/3-4 months) or like human (1 baby/9 months)?
Pregnant females stay working until the end, do they have maternity leave, or receive civil assignment during pregnancy?

Please, can we have an average Charr growing timeline?
This is a mess when we need to date our backgrounds. ^^
At what age a kitten joined and leave the Fahrar?
At what age a Charr is biologically a teenager and an adult?
I’ve seen roleplayers that have adult 5 years old Charrs and others with a 15 years old teenager.

How Charr deal with their health and hygiene?
Did the Black Citadel have an hospital?
Charr are the most advanced technology race, but what level have they reached in medicine?
Do they have drugs, vaccines, surgery or do they count on metabolism and immune system?
Players assume that Charrs stink, but cats clean themselves and the Black Citadel have showers modelled. Do they feel the need to take showers regularly or at least to be clean?

How is Charr daily life ?
Are Gladiums molested by the others?
Do Charrs have the meaning of money or did they discover it when becoming Gladiums?
Seen that legions manage everything, are soldiers paid or did they just receive ration tickets for alcohol at the tavern?
There is things that are toxic for Charrs and not for the others races? Like dogs who be poisoned by chocolate.

How is Fahrar life?
Is it socially accepted to be in a Fahrar when our parents are Gladiums? Is it only possible?
Each legion have its speciality, but what kind of teaching young Charrs can have at the Fahrar?

Have you suggestions of alternatives to see more Charrs of the High Legions without stucking them with the military chain of command?
Many Charr roleplayers I encountered feel the need to play Gladiums to explain the lack of warband and to be free to go where they want and not to be stuck at the Black Citadel when not in mission.

How is the Ebonhawk treaty going?
Have Humans and Charrs relations evolved since?
Do Charrs have the right to enter in Ebonhawk?

Question 1:Will we ever get event’s either living story or just group events that continue the story started in the book Ghosts of Ascalon and the Ascalon Catacombs dungeon?
Question 2: What happened to the God realms after the Gods left?
Question 3:How’s the Human- Charr treaty going(we haven’t heard anything about it since the Queen’s Jubilee update)?
Question 4: Where are the Havrouns outside of the Norn personal story?
Question 5: Just who is Rytlock Brimstone? outside the Edge of Destiny, Charr personal storyline and a few dungeons, we still don’t really know who he is, a lot about this Charr isn’t really known.
Question 6: What is the current situation between Palawa Joko and Kralkatorrik?
Question 7: Are the old underground Asuran cities still there?

Q1: There are plans to make any new playable race like theTengu, Skritt, Hylek, Quaggan, or any other new one?

Q2: Who/what is the Colossus we find at Cliffside Fractal? Is a god, a demigod or another race we dont know about? they are extinct or we will see them again? (I had this idea of 3 of those creatures come out from a fire pit and try to destroy all in their path and we needed to kill them).

Q3: The Sanguinary Blade (a legendary sword made of frozen dragon blood) we find in the Durmand Priory Order arc of the personal story. It will appear once again? Or new blades like those will be created? (I ask this bcs i think it would be cool if some humanoid dragon champion use them).

Q4: Taking the example of Scarlet’s invasions, the dragons plan to do any similar kind of invasions? I mean, Scarlet attacks with her minions over random maps, dragons could do the same.

Q5: With the aetherblades the enemies got airships. There are also air fights against dragons we can see at Orr. There will be any fight using airships (other than in the personal story)? And we will be able to build them?

Q6: We will be able to use other fighting mount machines (in pve and/or wvw) like the siege golems? I ask this bcs there are many machines over the world map, and we cant use them. In the personal story the charrs use tanks at Malchor’s leap.

I’m just gonna go about and answer questions that are asked which we have the answer for already – so that devs don’t go answering known questions.

Question 2: It was confirmed Naga are unrelated to the Krait and Forgotten.

I’d like to say that there was never any relation between Naga and Krait (or lack thereof) explained.

 • When did the Asura build Quora Sum and when did they leave it ?
 • When did the Asura discover Rata Sum ? (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Rata_Sum)
 • When was Rata Sum built ?
 • When did Snaff die ?
 • When was the Snaff Prize created ?
 • When did the destroyers become active ?
 • When did Zimm’s trial take place ?
 • How did Tarnished Coast evolve ? ( http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tarnished_Coast http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tarnished_Coast/Map )
 • Are Vlox Falls still an asura city ? Is it underwater ? Forgotten ? Erased ?
 • Have the asura ever expand in the Maguuma Jungle ?
 • What has become of Gadd’s camp and the access to the Shards of Orr’s gates ?
 • What happened to the Polymock ?
 • Why are the lower levels of Rata Sum destroyed ? Will they ever be rebuilt ? The roleplaying community really hopes so.
 • Is there any other small asuran cities on the surface like Soren Draa ?
 • We know that Ludo and Zudo are the Deans of the colleges of Statics and Dynamics respectively, but who is the Dean of the college of Synergetics?

These questions of yours we have the answer to. In order:

 • Don’t know about built, but they left it when the destroyers came in 1078 AE.
 • Same as when the destroyers came and forced the asura to the surface – in 1078 AE.
 • Are you referring to the original ruins, or the asuran city? If the latter, again initially built in 1078 AE but construction on it continues even to today (the Golem Mines in the deep center is, in lore, an area where golems are hollowing out more of the cube).
 • Snaff died in 1320 AE – this is the highlight of the novel Edge of Destiny.
 • The Snaff Price was made when Zojja returned to Rata Sum, which was immediately after the novel Edge of Destiny. It’s no more than 5 years old as of the personal story.
 • In 1078 AE, as far as we know. This was the main plot of Eye of the North.
 • In 1079 AE, during the War in Kryta content.
 • Evolve how? The only real changes that aren’t any more drastic than any other location changes are just new structures built by the asura.
 • Vlox Falls would be underwater (or fully erased) by now, and would have been within southern Caledon.
 • They’ve already expanded in the Maguuma Jungle over the past 250 years. In GW1, they only had two true settlements (Rata Sum and Vlox Falls), now they have multiple cities (including the destroyed Thaumanova) and reach far to the north than in GW1.
 • Can’t say for Gadd’s Encampment, but the Shards of Orr is mentioned by a sylvari in the Grove. Though I presume you mean Bloodstone Caves.
 • Nothing, really. It just wasn’t made in time for the game’s release. There’s a whole arena to it in the city.
 • As said before, they’re not destroyed but rather never built. It isn’t mentioned anywhere in-game as far as I know but was mentioned in an interview saying that the asura are still hollowing out that giant floating cube via golems.
 • Soreen Draa is technically part of Rata Sum (trivia; it’s actually where Rata Sum in GW1 was). There’s the now-destroyed Thaumanova and Mrot Boru within southern Brisban Wildlands which are cities. In terms of what we can visit, those are the only asura cities known.
 • I think until his death, Omadd was the dean of Synergetics. Don’t quote me on that one though.

.Why do the Sons of Svanir hate women? Is it because Jora refused the power of Jormag?

The Sons of Svanir hate women because not only did Jora refuse Jormag’s gift of power, but she killed Svanir – the first norn to be gifted Jormag’s power (and her brother).

Some more questions asked in this thread we have the answer to:

Question 1, part 1
The lore concerning Grenth is not very clear. In the Wiki, it says that Grenth was the child of Dwayna and a Mortal, but its difficult to find any reference to that specifically in either game. So, Was he a god from birth, or did he start out as a mortal half-god (or just mortal) until he defeated Dhuum and took his place? And was his father a human?

It’s not on the wiki, but it’s mentioned by Priestess Rhie during Cathedral of Silence personal story step if you talk to her before finishing the step. She says he was a half-god that rose to godhood and that his father was a “mortal sculptor.”

Speaking of Centaurs….Humans are beating them back, we’ve killed every Centaur Champion that tried to get in our way, and with the Charr treaty, they aren’t going to be fighting two wars anymore (that we know aside from Scarlet’s crazyness), and the Outcast Qindova was basically banished for suggesting peace. Are Centaurs just that stubborn and prideful and unable to accept defeat at the hands of someone with two less legs than them? Or is there something happening off-camera that we just don’t quite know about yet?

In an interview with GuildMag Jeff, Ree, and Scott said that the centaurs simply have nowhere to go – surrender means extinction if they cannot obtain new lands.

Question 4
I’m sure this has been asked before, but I couldn’t find any specific developer response…. Why are Horses Extinct in Tyria?

They aren’t. They just don’t show up in the game. They did, however, show up in Edge of Destiny in a view through an asura gate.

A better question is: Why do we not see horses in Tyria?

Question 1: Who is managing the lore of GW2 in Arena Net? Somebody needs to be responsible of what kind of lore is deleivered by the company, right?

Jeff Grubb and Ree Soesbee are the Lore Continuity folks at ArenaNet. Then you have lead writers like Angel McCoy, Scott McGough, and the team lead Bobby Stein who write the individual stories.

 • How long before the game started did the events of Edge of Destiny take place?
 • Why are a bunch of Sons of Svanir allowed to live more or less in peace in Hoelbrak?
 • Do Sylvari appear to age over time, or do they always look the same as the day they awakened? Are there signs that the Sylvari will one day die of old age, or are they probably immortal unless killed?
 • How did that Marriner plaque get all the way into Orr?
 • The Edge of Destiny novel started in 1319 AE and ended in 1320 AE – each dragon champion was separated by a few months of off-screen preparations. The game started in 1325 AE and we just entered 1327 AE in the Living World story.
 • The norn judge by individuals and their individual actions, not by whom they associate themselves with. A norn with the Priory will not be accepted as a bookworm just because he/she joined the Priory. Similarly, a Son of Svanir will not be treated as a threat just because he joined the Sons of Svanir – he will be treated as a threat once he starts becoming one personally. There are some norn who do not follow this view, but in general that is the cultural belief and why Sons of Svanir are allowed in Hoelbrak – until they start trouble.
 • This was asked in an interview in… 2010 I think. The answer was simply that there have been no signs yet.
 • Well, the guy next to the Cobiah Marriner statue says he placed the plaques where they are… I presume he was able to get to the Harbinger because of the Pact’s efforts in Orr reducing the number of Risen – and the ship being on the outskirts of Orr.

Question:

Why does it take so long (or never) to get weapon/armor skin glitches/bugs ironed out? For example, there is the Light Asura Cultural T3 set that has completely broken parts on a female Asura and it’s been like so since launch. Even a major character, Zojja, wears the glitched clothing; in cut-scenes too!

Question 2: It was confirmed Naga are unrelated to the Krait and Forgotten.

I’d like to say that there was never any relation between Naga and Krait (or lack thereof) explained.

Yep, I got it mixed up with an old lore discussion which leaned towards Krait and Naga being unrelated as well. 2manysnakes. But yeah you’re right, it was Naga and Forgotten being confirmed to have no relation. So it boils down to whether the Krait are related to the other serpentine races at all.

Also here I’d like to say thanks and props for making sure new lore questions will be answered Konig. C;

Looking back at what I wrote earlier, I’m realizing that some of my questions look a bit clustered and lengthy because they’re plastered with examples and explanations.

That being said, the devs of course don’t need to reply to any specific examples I mentioned – answering the general question if they should pick any of mine at all is enough. :p

Bit of a Lore/Gameplay question

With the recent clarification of the Calendar (365 days now over the old 360) What’s the deal with the in-game day/night cycle? Days in-game are over in 3 hours, so we should be passing by years extremely quickly, or is a day/night cycle not considered a full day in Tyria?

Ok so this is rather exciting! So many questions, I’ll just start with a few maybe add more if I think of them.

1. So this year instead of the Canthan new year we were given Dragon Bash, which came with the new Dragon’s Jade weapon skins. Do any of these things correlate to GW1 with things such as the CNY and the Luxon House’s use of Jade to make weapons and such?

2. In GW1 I am the ascended one, and my armor is infused against spectral agony. How, lore wise, are you justifying the current names: “ascended armor” and “infusion slots?”

3. So there were tons of hints during the Bazzaar of the four winds that the Zepherites were the ones housing the offspring of glint. So when do we get crystal dragon minis?? But seriously any kind of confirmation about that?

4. So about the human gods. They abandoned their pet race, have disappeared from the known world, and some even left behind their special champions. (see personal story. one of the seven reapers of grenth)
Are there any plans to bring them back to tyria?
If not why do you keep throwing back pieces and such things at us that are themed after them?
Why are we not seeing more that showcase the attributes of our spirits of the wild?
Or something that shows the might of the charr legions?
The gods are gone and no one can tell us why. So why should we care about them?

Thanks for the lore thread, and keep up the good work anet.

…snip…

We don’t even need Anet if you answer everything for them! (nah, good job. Answering questions that someone knows the answer too leaves Anet time to answer the ones we don’t know.)

1, pt. 1 – Guess I should’ve looked harder for that one, because I remember seeing it somewhere, but, since that is answered, I’m still wondering about Part 2 of that question though… (and together, those two answers will probably ask a dozen more questions than it has answers to….)

3 – Oh Come on! We’ve killed as many of them as we’ve killed undead! They have to be as desperate for their survival as the Krait!….maybe we’ll see Scarlet create the Skritt-Dragoon Alliance in the future! (also that link you gave me is saying “this account has been suspended”, but I haven’t been on that website before…)

4. – Fair enough….I guess I’ll reword the question then….
Why don’t we see Horses in Tyria, Elona, or Cantha?

can please someone explain me the meaning of the stat combo “Magi”?
I cant find anything about it. Does it mean Magic? Or Mage? Every stat Combo Name is Logical for me but that is…idk…

Magi is a (Latin, I think) term used to refer to magic users – no different than Mage, Wizard, etc.

Relevant bit from Wikipedia:::

Magi (/?me?d?a?/; Latin plural of magus; Ancient Greek: ????? magos; Old Persian: ???????????????? maguš, Persian: ???? mogh; English singular magian, mage, magus, magusian, magusaean; Kurdish: manji) is a term, used since at least the 6th century BC, to denote followers of Zurvanism or Zoroaster. The earliest known usage of the word Magi is in the trilingual inscription written by Darius the Great, known as the Behistun Inscription.

Starting later, presumably during the Hellenistic period, the word Magi also denotes followers of what the Hellenistic chroniclers incorrectly associated Zoroaster with, which was – in the main – the ability to read the stars, and manipulate the fate that the stars foretold.[citation needed] However, Old Persian texts, pre-dating the Hellenistic period, refer to a Magus as a Zurvanic, and presumably Zoroastrian, priest.

So, yeah, In a fantasy sense, Magic user.

I have several questions about the lore, being a GW1 veteran, I’m sure some others wouldn’t mind knowing these as well:

• Who are the elder dragons?
• Do we get to see them all?
• Will Drakkar rise from Drakkar Lake?
• Will Kralkatorrik awake from his slumber?
• Is Zhaitan an elder dragon?
• Who is managing the underworld now? Is it still Grenth?
• Is Menzies still stirring up trouble in the Fissure of Woe?
• Who is Abbadon’s unnamed predecessor?
• How old do Asura’s live to be?
• Whatever happened to the Zaishen?
• Will Xunlai Agents ever come back to the game? If not, what happened to them?
• Will there ever be Polymock in GW2? ?
• Were locked chests only a GW1 thing? Will they ever be back?
• Is there someone to follow in Nicholas the Traveler’s footsteps?
• What is really going on with the Hall of Monuments?
• The Mursaat are not in GW2, but if they must keep the Door of Komalie closed, where are they enjoying their tequila shots?
• Will there be more of the Luxon and Kurzick Houses?
• With Palawa Joko being undead in one of the GW1 Campaigns, will we ever see his lovely face again?
• Do we ever find out more about The Forgotten?
• Where is Oola’s Lab today?
• Is there more to the Shiverpeak Mountains?
• Will we venture to the Ring of Fire Islands and discover the Door of Komalie unprotected and opened?
• Will adventurers be able to use something similar to the scrying pool for GW2 in their HoM?
• Where does the Tomb of Primeval Kings currently reside?
• Is there still a Brotherhood of the Dragon?

Helping to answer some questions so the devs can’t dodge the unanswered meaty ones by picking those we’ve known for some time.

1.) “Bubbles” the Deep Sea Dragon (they won’t reveal his name in an interview), Jormag, Kralkatorrik, Mordremoth (the “jungle dragon”), Primordus, Zhaitan.

2.) That depends on how successful GW2 is and whether they stick with this tedious LW or go with the good ol’ expansion model. But yeah, we should get to see all the Elder Dragons before the servers are shut down in the distant future.

3.) Kralkatorrik awakened back in 1319 AE, which was 6 years before GW2’s starting year of 1325 AE. If you refer to the lack of word of him, he’s not slumbering; skulking around the desert or further east/south/southeast or he might’ve actually fled into the Rift.

4.) Yes, Zhaitan is an Elder Dragon.

5.) Approximately with an additional 20% of Guild Wars human longevity (80-100), so asura’s is 100-120. (Confirmed in a pre-release interview.)

6.) With the Battle Isles lost, the Zaishen moved to Lion’s Arch and incorporated the other races’ ideas about war and combat, admitting non-humans into their ranks over time. They should’ve had a major presence in WvW, given how originally it was going to be Balthazar who’d opened the portal to the Mists, but since ANet loves discrediting the Six Gods, downplaying their actions and so on, the portal was made to be discovered by an Asuran krewe. ^^ Now the Zaishen aimlessly wander around Fort Marriner, doing nothing.

7.) The Xunlai agents who were cut off from the guild in Cantha remained in Tyria, blending it with the Krytan populace and the humans of Lion’s Arch. Since we have no knowledge of Cantha for the last 100 years, it can’t be told whether there’s still a Xunlai guild or not.

8.) Polymock was planned from the beginning. It was going to be Rata Sum’s main activity, but since they seemingly quit developing these activities, it’s up in the air. Also, this is not a lore question.

9.) The mursaat have been all but wiped out as far as we know, so they are not keeping Komalie closed – even then, Komalie leads to the Foundry of Failed creations, and that area was liberated by Kormir and her Forgotten forces (with outside help of human heroes) post Abaddon’s and Mallyx’s fall – so there’s nothing nasty that could come through that gate, hopefully. Regarding the mursaat; the only survivor (on Tyria) we know of is Lazarus the Dire, but he hasn’t been seen or heard of for two and a half centuries now.

• Will there be more of the Luxon and Kurzick Houses?
• With Palawa Joko being undead in one of the GW1 Campaigns, will we ever see his lovely face again?
• Is there more to the Shiverpeak Mountains?
• Where does the Tomb of Primeval Kings currently reside?
• Is there still a Brotherhood of the Dragon?

10.) Since ANet basically sewn their lips together to avoid slipping any information on Cantha, it’s unlikely they will answer such a specific question. But Luxons have three clans, composing their armada: Crab, Serpent, Turtle. Kurzicks have five great houses – zu Heltzer, Brauer, Vasburg, Durheim, and Lutgardis – and several small ones, such as Gorhopf and Ulrikar.

11.) If there’s going to be an Elonian expansion, it’s 100% that Palawa Joko will be in it. He’s taken control of Vabbi by redirecting the river Elon (causing drought and famine in Elona while turning parts of the Desolation and the southern reaches of the Crystal Desert into flowering expanses), and forced Kourna and Istan to be his vassals. He’s hunted down the members of the Ossa line, presenting them the chance to live by submitting to his will, even getting a military rank in his army as well as a position in the court. The Sunspears have been decimated, and King Joko created a new, elite organization called the Mordant Crescent, its bulk made up of ex-Sunspears – both living traitors and undead members who resisted Joko to their dying breath, but were forced to serve him in undeath. He’s said to be a tyrant, but he’s not slaughtering the living populace, only keeps them in check through terror and the control of the Elon – he’s a kitten effective ruler, and his state of being an undead lich is only a superficial thing. He thinks with the mind of a mortal, living monarch.

12.) You mean whether the Shiverpeaks expand further north? It has to, since we couldn’t see its northern tip even on the GW:EN map of Tyria.

13.) Where it has resided for more than a millennium: in the northern Crystal Desert, not far from the Dragon’s Lair. It’s probably been consumed/branded by Kralkatorrik.

14.) The Brotherhood was a dwarven organization so they all turned to stone and joined their brethren in the Depths to fight Primordus and the destroyers – however, since we don’t know the fate and location of Glint’s child(ren), it’s possible some stone dwarves remained to defend their sacred charge. And also, the Zephyrite Sanctum and the Zephyrites are the legal descendants of the Brotherhood, and have been greatly inspired by the order and Glint.

I think the questions I care more are about the future of Guild Wars 1. Why? Because I know that the majority will never be answered in GW2.
Here I’m quoting the wiki loose ends:

Factions

1) Did the Emperor truly have intentions to kill Shiro?

2) What is the origin of Kanaxai?

Nightfall

3) What becomes of the Realm of Torment after Kormir’s rise?

Beyond

4) What happened to the Ministry of Purity after Reiko’s fall?

And all the things that has not been answered due to the cancelled content!

5) After Winds of Change, there were going to be “things people are going to be surprised by”. What were you talking about?

6) The attempts of the Lunatic Court to free Mad King Thorn have attracted the attention of “someone else” looking to return to Tyria. Is it related to the Prince? Also what was the connection with the Nameless Lich?

7) You also suggested that the story of Palawa Joko after Nightfall would have been expanded.

8) What happened at Evennia?

9) What happened to Livia?
“When asked about what happened to Livia and the Scepter of Orr, continuity designer Ree Soesbee stated that she “couldn’t answer that question” and that it was important that she couldn’t answer it."

If you really can’t tell us, al least tell us if we will ever know!

EDIT: I was forgetting this fondamental question!
10) What is the Wizard’s Tower?

Ok. These are my very very important questions I would like to be answered.

You can also think to answer this questions with Short Stories like the Family Business (but that was a bit too long) or the trek of the Zephyrites. I would really appreciate the reading of it.

Thanks you!

We don’t even need Anet if you answer everything for them! (nah, good job. Answering questions that someone knows the answer too leaves Anet time to answer the ones we don’t know.)

That is my hope. No need for repeated info, right ArenaNet? (No, that’s not a lore question. It’s rhetorical!)

Yeah, sorry about the link. Blame GuildMag – their entire site is down for unknown reasons. I was told it should be back up today. But the explanation ArenaNet gave for the centaur hostilities (and lack of ceasing) is that they literally have nowhere to go anymore (partially in thanks to Jormag, I presume) so they’re pushing south with even more vigor (as opposed to during GW1 where we barely heard of them, especially outside their then homeland) – and that they’ll more or less fight to the last man. What is interesting to note is that the Harathi come from what’s now the Maguuma Wastes.

You’d have to wait until GM fixes their problem before you can get the word-for-word answer.

• Will Drakkar rise from Drakkar Lake?
• Will Kralkatorrik awake from his slumber?
• Is Zhaitan an elder dragon?

• How old do Asura’s live to be?
• Whatever happened to the Zaishen?
• Will Xunlai Agents ever come back to the game? If not, what happened to them?

• Is there someone to follow in Nicholas the Traveler’s footsteps?

• The Mursaat are not in GW2, but if they must keep the Door of Komalie closed, where are they enjoying their tequila shots?

• Where does the Tomb of Primeval Kings currently reside?
• Is there still a Brotherhood of the Dragon?

To answer these questions:

 • It was said a while back, I believe, that Drakkar did wake from beneath Drakkar lake.
 • Kralkatorrik awoke during the novel Edge of Destiny, specifically in 1320 AE – the game is (post-this Wintersday) in 1327 AE.
 • Yes. He is the Elder Dragon of Undeath.
 • It was said a long while back that asura live about 5-10% longer than humans, with exceptional ages being about 120 years old.
 • They are still around, seen on the eastern end of Fort Marriner. They became multi-racial in the past 250 years and… that’s about it. They don’t hold any role thus far, but they’re around.
 • The Xunlai Agents turned into the Arch Exchange after Cantha closed its borders. They are the ones who run the banks now adays, founded by "Captain Hao Luen’s ":http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Captain_Hao_Luen grandfather, Hao Luen (the family isn’t really original in names, is it?).
 • Good question, there is Horas the Traveler seen in Snowden Drifts (near the exit to Gendarran Fields) whom has a dolyak near him.
 • The mursaat kept the Door of Komalie closed because of the Flameseeker Prophecies. The prophecies had already been fulfilled and their race brought to the edge of extinction because of them – there is no more need to guard the door, given that it leads to what is now Kormir’s realm (formerly Abaddon’s realm – he had intended to use it to invade Tyria with an army of Titans led by The Fury as found out in Domain of Anguish in Nightfall).

*The Tomb of the Primeval Kings is located just north of Glint’s Lair – it is now at the southern end of the Dragonbrand.

 • The Brotherhood of the Dragon is no more; it was succeeded by the Zephyrites.

Actually, he awoke in 1320 AE. The novel begins in 1319 AE but occurs over the course of a year (give or take).

That was left unanswered before because it would have spoiled the novel Sea of Sorrows as Livia shows up there.

So allow me to alter your question:

What happened to Livia after Sea of Sorrows? 70 years and we got nothing. Is she truly Anise like people think? :P

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I, like many, have many questions regarding various parts of lore in Tyria. Some of my questions have relations to the GW Books, so please be prepared to read spoilers. To name a few:

 1. QUESTION- Livia, the last we have seen or heard from her, she was a personal “body guard” of King Edair, son of King Baede around 1256AE. She was Exemplar of the Shining Blade and seemed to not age since the days from when she took the Scepter of Orr. Why is she not in the presence of Queen Jennah? Has she died? Or is she on another personal quest that we do not know about? Since Countess Anise is the current Exemplar, she must know where or how Livia dissapeared, or why she is not relevant in the Noble realm of Kryta.
 2. QUESTION- In line with my previous questions, what has become of the Sceptor of Orr? Was it destroyed by Livia or has someone else taken it for themselves? Is it possible Zhaitan consumed the Scepter of Orr for its magical power? (All of this would make a great fractal, as it’s in the past.)
 3. QUESTION- Currently we only know that a mysterious wizard Isgarren supposedly owns the Wizards Tower located near Garrenholf. Interestingly, this tower has moved from its original location (GW1 era). What magic is able to move this large mass? If Isgarren has the cababilities to perform such magic, how did he obtain such exceptional skills? This tower also was the rumor of holding ancient magical tomes of unknown origin. Where did they come from? This whole tower has been the center of “campfire” talk in Tyria, especially when the nights become dark and cold, something stirs in the tower near Kessex.
 4. QUESTION- Eye of the North, this tower is another mysterious piece of architecture that seemingly dodges any attempts to defoil it’s history. Where did this tower come from? Who made it? Why do Norn stay away? Why has it been untouched by the Icebroad currently?
 5. QUESTION- Underworld, the place where souls go, but then disturbed by Dhuum, this place was no candyland. What has become of the realm and is Dhuum still roaming his sanctuary?
 6. QUESTION- Fissure of Woe, realm of Balthazar , with his evil-half brother Menzies fighting to take control, was this place also destroyed? If so, how? What became of Menzies and his shadow army? (Granted, both places are tied to the Human Gods, but this was left unanswered and has potential to be an amazing addition to todays Tyria
 7. QUESTION- Lazarus the Dire, one of the last remaining Mursatt. Did he survive? If so where is he located? Is it possible that the white mantle are hiding him somewhere and bringing him back to full health?
 8. QUESTION- Malyck and his kin, this Sylvari is from another supposed pale tree and has gone in search for them. What has become of lonely Malyck? Has he come in touch with other Sylvari or fallen upon darker lands?
 9. QUESTION- I will keep this as my last question, though I can ponder on many. The Dwarves, though not directly about the Dwarves, is it possible that there could be a kin somewhere in the far north or east? Many other races have similar species that could be tied together from the distant past. Could the dwarves have a type of cousin we don’t know about?

~This Concludes my Questions~

Oh, and …. Cantha

So, lore questions? i bet a lot of people would have a field day if they would get their answers here:

1.
Will we see something like the great destroyer, or more enemies which look akin to the ones we saw in EotN (looking at you disc of death)

2.
Why would an Asura enginieer use low tech weapons like a human? (i know it is design, but what would be the lore reason)

3.
What was/is beneath the (now covered up and “forgotten”) great collapse in Divinities Reach? What was the reason for it in the first place?
NPCs around it talked about hearing things from below, etc. So there was the possibility to use it.
Or is DE in danger of seismic activities?

4.
What is the rough size of Scarlet`s forces supposed to be?
Thanks to game mechanics she seems to have an unlimited amount of disposable soldiers on her hand, while i always thought they serve certain “roles”. (i.e. Aetherblades hit+run group, MA beeing the mainforce, etc…)

5.
Why does Orr look so “round”?
What did you imagine as you told the designers about Orr? It does look great, but weird. Not like a place to live but to look at.

That`s enough, i do not have any strong questions.

My personal lore question: Why does the mountain that houses the Durmand Priory headquarters (at least to me) looks so strikingly like an Elder Dragon that turned to stone some ages ago? Mystery, coincidence, or vivid imagination?

Also: What’s that swirly thing that marks the heart of the Priory (the Skill Challenge)?

 • Final Question: What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen tengu?

Do you mean a Canthan tengu or a Tyrian tengu?

First of all I’d like to thank Arenanet for taking the time to answer a lot of the questions that players have for them. Since many of the more commonly asked lore questions have already been mentioned I’d like to ask about the professions themselves, and how they fit into the culture and lore of Tyria.

Question 1: Thief: How are members of the Thief profession treated in society? For example if someone walked up to a seraph officer and openly announced they were a member of the thief profession would they instantly be arrested and treated as a criminal? Is there a big difference between common thieves (the kind who hide in back alleys and rob/mug people) and those who just happen to be of the Thief profession? Do practitioners of the Thief profession only steal from their enemies in combat? Or should people always be wary of their belongings when they’re around them?

Question 2: Ranger: I’ve noticed in game and in several short stories that Rangers tend to speak to their pets in full sentences as well as giving them very complicated commands. Are Ranger pets smarter then other animals? Does the charming process of a Ranger increase their intelligence in order to understand what others are saying on a more advanced level? On a slightly different note, what’s the lore behind swapping/stowing pets in the game? Is this simply a mechanical feature for the profession? Or can Rangers use their magic to instantly transport pets to and from their side?

Question 3: Guardian: Most professions seem to have both good and bad practitioners. However since the Guardian’s magic seems to revolve around protecting and healing others I was wondering if it’s possible for a Guardian to be evil or corrupt? Or do most of them just serve as admirable peacekeepers?

Question 4: Elementalist: Back in Guild Wars 1 most Elementalists seemed to specialize in one element alone. But in the time of Guild Wars 2 Elementalists can switch between elements instantly. Is this because the amount of magic in Tyria has increased over the last 250 years? Are their still Elementalists that like to specialize in one element alone?

Question 5: Warrior: What does it take for a citizen of Tyria to become recognized as a Warrior? Is it simply a matter of strength and martial ability? Or is there something more to it? I was also wondering how the Asura deal with being a Warrior? Do they wear special armour that increases their power to match the other races? Or do they just rely on using more acrobatic styles of combat?

I think I’ll stop myself here. Sorry if I got carried away with my barrage of questions but I love Tyrain lore, and I’m sure many people (especially role players like myself) would love to hear more lore information on the professions. Thank you again.

Hi! It’s really awesome that you guys are making this a trend. I have two basic questions, both of which have been asked already, but I wanted to bring them up again simply so you might notice them more.

1- Will tengu ever become a playable race, or will the Dominion of Winds at least be opened up to explore? This is a bit of a gameplay question, but there would surely be a lot of lore to learn if we could just see what’s behind those darn walls.

2- Will Malyck’s story ever be expanded upon? The “Where Life Goes” story arc has stayed, after experiencing five different character storylines, my favorite arc in the entire game. It’s extremely intriguing and I hope you guys show us more of him/the potential second Pale Tree/Magus Falls in general.

Thank you!

Question 2: Are we going to see new lands, areas and zones conected to lore in 2014?

No.

This is a frequently asked question and has been frequently answered by the devs. Adding more areas means that you ultimately decrease the player density in existing areas leading to dead zones/maps (even without adding areas some zones are dead – e.g. Timberline Falls).

This response holds no value in terms of confirmed statements regarding new areas. They have stated that we would see no new zones in the remainder of 2013, which held true. But they have not stated the case for 2014.

- During the Tower of Nightmares story arc, we’re told that there are similarities between Bloodstones and Krait Obelisks, presumably due to the latter being able to store magic in the same way the former does. Could you elaborate on that?

- Official lore states that the High Legions are named after their respective Primus Warbands. We know that the Imperator is supposed to lead the Primus Warband as a (presumed) descendant of the Khan-Ur; however, there’s no sign of that when you see the ‘warband surnames’ of the current Imperators. What happened to this ancient tradition of the Charr?

Hello ! I’d like to point back to this lore interview from Esprits d’Orr : http://esprits-dorr.fr/node/261
I’m sure the writing team is aware that it raised a lot of concerns and I guess it would be good to answer a few questions about it.

- Was retconning the Mouvelian calendar really necessary ? I mean it really felt like it was done on a whim, erasing one of those things that make GW’s universe feel authentic just like that for no real benefit. It’s not like dates and calendars actually played any role in the storyline so far so it could very well have stayed the same. I believe the people who are curious enough to find some reference to the Mouvelian calendar can handle the fact that it only has 360 days and you need to do some imaginary stretching so that it aligns correctly with our real-word time.

- What sort of internal structures do you have at work to maintain consistency of the universe in the long run ? I know you have a big wiki for pure objective and logical consistency, but what about the spirit of the universe ? For instance, in the aforementionned interview, the lore explanation for waypoints just felt way too comical, cheesy, and frankly a bit ridiculous for what we’re used to see in the GW universe. How do you make sure a story doesn’t suddenly switch from Shakespearian Drama to Monty Python Burlesque ? Do you have a lead writer to keep it in check or do you expect every single writer to be very well aware of the major themes that GW’s story is built upon ?

Thank you very much for your time Anet. I know my questions contain a bit of a personnal opinion but I guess it’s important to voice one’s concerns from time to time

Question 1: What happened to the human gods of Tyria and will they come back?

Question 2: Are there any plans to put more lore into the LS releases? Getting it in game is much more immersive than reading short stories on the website. The Scarlet story arc has been very sparse lore wise, sometimes amounting to only 1 or 2 lines of lore in a whole release.

Question 3: Have any solutions or plans been made to show the world evolving and becoming living? Zhaitian has been dead for over a year and yet there is no visible difference or change in the world. Shouldn’t other dragons forces be moving in and taking over? The number of new players has got to be pretty small at this point compared to vet players. The instances can certainly stay the same for personal story reasons, but the world itself really needs to move on.

There has been plenty more than “a line or two” in every update, even more so in the last patches if you take the time to look for it; there’s a great quantity of lore included, even if some was already known from “What Scarlet Saw”. Definitely it’s something they’re improving with time.

I’m sorry if these questions are already answered. I’m not that well versed in the lore and I couldn’t find any information about them.

Question 1: Why did the defeat of the Great Destroyer delay the awakening of Primordus?
Question 2: Did this also delay the awakening of the other Elder Dragons? And if so, why?
Question 3: Is the jungle dragon still asleep? If so, since we know they react to magic, would it be able to awaken if someone was tampering with the ley lines?

Bit of a Lore/Gameplay question

With the recent clarification of the Calendar (365 days now over the old 360) What’s the deal with the in-game day/night cycle? Days in-game are over in 3 hours, so we should be passing by years extremely quickly, or is a day/night cycle not considered a full day in Tyria?

Maybe Tyria has several suns and the passing of all of them is one day.

I was wondering about the Pack, how are things going politically now that Zhaitan is gone? After all the only reason the Orders joined together was to fight Zhaitan and with no other dragons in sight (or some big threat to keep cohesion amongst them) it seems like their ideological different would start to flare up creating some division. Not to mention Trahearne. The only reason he was chosen to lead the pack was because of his knowledge of Zhaitan and knowledge of the necromancer art. I doubt he’d be all that knowledgeable in regards to any of the other dragons, and his performance in the campaign against Zhaitan… well he didn’t seem to be all that useful really. So I can imagine a lot of Pack members questioning if they really should still follow him. The vigil will most likely be questioning his military ability, the priory how much useful insight he might contribute and the order of whispers, who knows with them.

Runes

Before I ask my questions (which are all related), let me first briefly explain the reason for them. The official Guild Wars 2 wiki has “bug” entries on several runes, like Superior Rune of Strength and Superior Rune of Rage. On their discussion pages, the writers explain that the runes’ 6th bonus effect was tested using fixed damage weapons on the trainers in PvP. So please, developers, considering what you can say to the community, please shine some light on this:

#1: Are the methods the players used to test the 6th bonus correct?
#2: Can you just answer with a yes or no, are these runes really broken?
#3: If they are broken, can you say whether you plan on fixing them or changing their bonuses?

Q1: This is no lore question per se, but tied to lore team and was wondering about it for some time – Are Ree Soesbee and Jeff Grubb still Lore Gurus of ANet? Since launch, I heard almost nothing from/about them. And if not, who is the Master of the Lore?
Q2: There is a Grenth statue in Shiverpeaks mountains (with Underworld creatures around and skill point to commune with the statue). What exactly is it doing there and what is it´s purpose?
Q3: We know that Infinity Coil Reactor (aka Crucible of Eternity) is supposed to tap into Dragon energies. 250 years ago, asuras were “powering” their entire gate network with magic of Primordus. How exactly can one harvest the Draconic energies to use them as power source. What are it´s pros and cons?
Q4: Again, not 100% lore question, but does Living Story takes place after Personal Story, or are these happening alongside each other? I remember that Lost Shores (not LS yet, I know, but basically it was, even though it wasn´t) were stated to happen because Zhaitan is dead and seas are more free to be sailed (but later it was stated that it is not determined when these things happen). Also Tequatl Rising – there is Pact, even though in PS it can not be established for someone. There is also mention by one of the generals of the Southsun…Therefore – before or after Zhaitan? (and don´t tell me it doesn´t matter, please, it does)
Q4: What are origins of the norn and why do they look so human like (or is it humans who look norn-like, since they are from different planet?)
Q5: To continue in that spirit…will we ever learn where are humans from exactly and why (and how!) did the Six brought them on Tyria?
Q6: Spirits of the Wild. Are they just basic manifestations of the animals, or are they entities comparable to the Six gods? Meaning, are they god-like in nature, or are just some magical spirits?
Q7: How does it work, when a Spirit (like Owl) dies. There are owls that are effected by this (in Snowden Drifts, I think? there is this Lodge of Owl, destroyed with sacred Owls and Heart based around this), but on the other hand, there are Owls that are completely fine.
Q8: Were asuras ever on surface before the events of GW1? What exactly is Rata Pten?
Q9: Gargoyles…what happened?
Q10: How does Dragon corruption work exactly? When one dies and is corrupted, is his spirit trapped within his corpse? When long dead body is corrupted (for example, last king of Orr), is it´s spirit pulled from the mists (as his spirit shows when his corrupted body – the Eye is killed), or what?

Aaaand I guess I ´ll stop right here…sorry if I asked a question that was already asked, I stopped to read them all
And oh, thanks for doing this ANet, much appreciated!

1. I wanna know what’s up with Mhenlo! That man had too much game to fade from history. Are we all related to him ala Genghis Kahn?

2. Menzies, he’s not technically a God or at least not one of the big six. We see creatures escape from the underworld in gods lost, will we ever see an area where his minions roam in some form?

3. How does Joko rate on the dictator scale? Miserable despot or that strange Dr. Doom-like loved but feared? Has it been so long that most of his transgressions are forgotten?

4. Are we going to see The Consortium’s headquarters eventually? I really want to turn in a job application.

5. Are we going to learn exactly how Rytlock got Rurick’s sword and will we see the ascalon ghost story progress in the future?

@ Vissarion & Rash: this is meant for lore questions, not gameplay mechanics.

Going to help here and answer as much as possible too, with what is known thus far.

Question 1: It is speculated champions have the role of preparing the coming of their masters by gathering magical energy from corrupting/creating minions. Thus, once the Great Destroyer was… destroyed, we hindered Primordus coming.
Question 2: No, the defeat of the Great Destroyer didn’t affect the awakening of any other Elder Dragon.
Question 3: He has yet not awoken, but his magical energy might be already affecting Tyria; as happened with Jormag’s back in Eye of the North.

Question 1: Asura biology mystifies me, and I would love clarification. Are they mammals, or something else? And do they grow hair naturally, or are most of them just wearing wigs?

Question 2: It’s known that humans are not native to Tyria, having arrived with their gods some 200 years before the whole Abaddon mess. I was wondering, is this not native to Tyria the continent, or not native to Tyria the planet?
