Don't want "Party" as a requirement
Huh weird, I have never gotten zero loot unless I had already received the loot box for the day on that character. I even only tagged a champ with 3 shots and still got loot (and I was solo, I am almost always solo). I have yet to get a gold medal and not get the loot rewards (on champs that actually drop chests).

What?! I’ve never had a problem getting loot from a champ while not being in a party unless I come in at the very tail end and cannot get any damage on them. The amount of damage you have to do to get credit for them is pretty minimal (I’d say around 10k).
I agree with the OP, given their supposed design goals it is baffling why they have made it so that the damage the whole group does applies to every player in the group seperately.
Doing some champ farming recently I only needed to get 1 hit on a champ to register for loot so long as I’m in a group whereas when I wasn’t in a group I had to lay several hits on the champs to register for the loot.
Supposedly they didn’t create raid grouping functionality because they didn’t want that kind of formal grouping to be needed in the open world.

Depending on the class 10k isn’t minimal when you’re in a zerg and the champ goes down in seconds.

Well, loot tagging isn´t that hard these days, annoying none the less, but still: if you are running a build that cannot qualify for loot – assuming you arrived on time for the champ – you really need to reexamine your character (and not just because of loot tagging)
Then you complain about zergs, but apparently want to be part of the farming succesfully – well, I´d call that hipocrisy.
Those parties barely deserve the name. Well, people ask for membership or autojoin. Usually no conversation happens in those parties. They are NO liabilities at all. If even that is too much for you – and those are usually not even required when arriving in time and doing a very reasonable amount of damage anyway – you really have to ask yourself whether an mmorpg is really the kind of game for you.

I was actually talking more about the principle of how players register for loot being at odds with their supposed design principles.

I don’t usually join a party – I got 2 exotic loots yesterday. A Cobalt and a trash stuff. And top it with 3 rares. Pretty cool to me.
All but one of the times I’ve not gotten a drop from a champion (since the loot revamp), I’d clearly done “too few hits” due to late arrival, etc. The one time I didn’t get a drop but did a lot of hits was due, I believe, to being on a condition engineer when there were too many condition applies there. This is probably why my warrior gets full credit more consistently in these events than my engineer.

I just make sure to give atleast 15k total damage to a champ to make sure it drops something above “yellow” box
i can swear is less than 10k and i can get loot even if i get bronze medal… and when i’m in the open world i rarely party especially with strangers…
i don’t think the damage done by the party qualifies better than single player damage to tag a mob.
i’m not sure of this but would be very strange

If you didn’t get loot then you didn’t tag it.
Atleast I’m pretty sure that’s the definition of tagging.
I have no problems getting tags as solo player so I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong. Are you focusing too much on conditions?
Personally though I think the whole tag limitations are pointless, you have to be near the mob when it dies to loot it ANYWAY, so how exactly is running by and love tapping a champ going to be abused?
If you must then make it so tagging makes the loot/chest stay longer if tap-tagging is too abusive with multiple champs close enough to each other or something, so you can’t get loot on 5 different mobs, but really when does this happen???
Also they really need to make support abilities help with tagging, if you drop a bunch of aoe healing and boons on people that killed a champ why can’t you get atleast partial credit from that to assist in tagging it? Just doesn’t make sense.
In the end though they should really focus on moving rewards away from mobs and putting them in event victories, mob tagging only rewards selfish gameplay and discourages teamwork plain and simple.
I don’t think its a consistent problem but it does make me scratch my head sometimes. During my time in the zerg events today there were 2 encounters I had back to back that left me feeling… confused about how it works:
Encountered an invasion champ and was the first one there. I was the first to hit it and attacked it consistently and steadily (not just autoattacking, x.x) and the champ went down. I got nothing. Fine, whatever, the event has tons of champs, I’m not worried.
So I run over to a nearby invasion spawn and there’s a champ down to half health. So I attack it just like I did the first… and got an exotic champ drop (Elaborate Ritualist Bag I think?).
Soooo… idk. Help fight a champ from 100→0, get nothing. Come in halfway and help fight a champ from 50→0, get best rewards. Odd…
Its not something that happens always, but it does happen.

In my direct experience it does.

so according to this logic i f i kill mob a and my party mate kill mob b we can loot both? i don’t think so… so why should it work differently when fighting a single mob for us to be in party or separated?
also when i’m in party with my boyfriend sometimes i never managed to tag mobs (i’m talking before all this changes to loot table) while he still looted a lot and more than me… so. i won’t bet on it… but my guess is it doesn’t make any difference

No it doesnt work like that you still have to get a hit on a mob to qualify for the drop. Its just you appear to get total party damage on that mob added to your own damage.
