Yes as the title said, guys do not trust, always use the Trading Post. I have never been scammed before in any game ive played. I was so rushing on upgrading my beta capacitor back piece from Fractals. I only had 50 gold that took me so long to save and spoof gone because i trusted someone selling; Ectos, lodestones and mystic coins in LA overflow. I cannot said his name here you all know that but i can tell you, use the TP.

@ Anet please.. for casuals like me that hard grinds the hours of play we have.
- I already reported the person, i hope what ive heard is true that if you scam youll get punished.

All this could be avoided by simply implementing normal trade window between players (like in ANY MMORPG out there – it obviously isn’t rocket science) – but noooo we have to implement silly toys and holiday events first !

But then, people wouldn’t use the TP. If you use te TP, you get taxed, which is a money sink, which means money goes ‘POOF’ which means people will want to make even MORE money, which means they will cave and buy gems from the gem shop and convert to gold.

Without taxes, there is no incentive to buy gems from cash shop. Simply, A.Net loses their revenue. So, there will be no trading between players

There has to be better reason. Every single f2p game(you know, games that rely only on cash shop to exist) I ever played had a perfectly good trading system without having an income problem. And it’s so easy to create massive gold sinks out of thin air if needed.

One of the reasons for not having player trading was to prevent scamming, which GW1 had a problem with. By choosing to remove trading, they can shift the support that has to deal with bad trades to somewhere else.

The reason is in no way a benefit to the player, it’s a benefit to their costs.

What a horrible, horrible person -you- are for wishing harm on someone for having a different opinion on trade pvp.

It is unfortunate for the threadstarter that he was fooled by such a simple trick but I hope the other guy won’t be punished for it. We don’t need an environment where anet has to babysit players when interacting with each other.

Apply some common sense before sending off large sums of gold and you’ll be fine.

I have to laugh a little bit.

First, I’m laughing that someone decided to “trust” a complete stranger on the Internet. That was the first mistake. Common sense would tell us that you not “trust” someone in a situation where there is no repercussions for violating said trust. From ANet’s point of view, you mailed someone X amount of gold. Period. I would be fairly disappointed with ANet if they actually returned your money, because what you did is tried to circumvent the in-house trading system: the TP. By trying to save yourself some cash, you lost everything. Ever hear the phrase, “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”?

Second, I’m laughing about all the people telling Phlem to choke on it. You guys talk about him being so horrible, and yet you wish him ill. Hypocritical much?

The OP didn’t follow the dictates of common sense, or the mechanics for trading set forth by the game. Trading by mail is a one-way system. If you want to buy something, you buy it from the trading post. Doing anything else is like the idiots who fell for the scam in GW1 where you were instructed to join party, go outside, and drop an item on the ground…

The only victim here was common sense.

It is common sense but it doesn’t mean the scammer should get away with it. I just use the TP unless it is a trusted friend. I hope Anet would fix this but then again it is a gamble and if you roll craps in a casino you don’t get a refund!

Certainly something should be done to the player if it can be proven he/she scammed. Just like in real life, it’s not good to have people running around trying to scam others, so having violations for doing such only helps the community as a whole.

Not that refunds should be given out by ANet, the OP certainly made a mistake and shouldn’t be refunded. But it’s still not okay to allow people to willingly attempt to scam.

lol you get 3 day – 7 day suspensions for defrauding and the guy will still have the money when he logs back on. gg to him.

True, but depending on the amount of gold and time frame of suspension, it still could be counter productive to make gold via scamming. Plus a 3-7 day ban is fairly presumptuous. You get 3 days for foul language, whose to say it isn’t much longer for scamming gold? If they can see he’s scammed enough, they could very well just perma ban him. That would be a true GG.

If there was a trade window, here is what EVERY SINGLE chat window would look like, map, guild, say, everything:

WTS Dusk – 400G
WTB Charged Lodestones 1G ea.
WTS Peach tarts 20s each
~~~ BUYING ~~~ 1000x MITHRIL ORE ~~~ 10c ~~~
WTS Dusk – 400G
WTS Peach tarts 20s each
I also agree, and it has been said that scamming another player is cause for an action on the account of the scammer. Anet will not refund money or items, but they will take action on a players account who are activly scamming other players. That action could be up to and including banning the scammers account. Every time a report is made and action is taken, you can be sure a mark is placed on the account. Too many marks, and it’s Bye Bye!
I, for one, don’t like the “every man for himself” attitude a lot of you people have (in-game, as well as IRL). Too many people go around taking advantage of other people (and other peoples’ trust and good nature), which just creates more pain and suffering, and makes life a little less worth living for everyone else. It also makes the world a more hostile place to live, and perpetuates more suspicion and paranoia.
Have a little compassion. There is something to be said for being a good person and loving one another. And I’m sure most of you don’t need me to tell you about right from wrong… Perhaps instead of going around trying to harm others to gain something for yourself, you could perform random acts of kindness.
And to the OP, I’m really sorry that happened to you. I’ve personally lost my trust in humanity years ago, and it makes me sad to see the same thing happening to you. My advice to you is, don’t let this experience sour you too much about interacting with others (although it may be a good idea to stay vigilant to prevent being scammed in the future). And don’t become one of those people that say “well, someone did something bad to me, so I’m going to start doing bad things to other people if it could be advantageous to me”. Just continue being kind to others and hope that in some way it comes back to you.
Anyway, just my 2c.
1 -he got scammed by a player attempting a direct transaction and your solution is to implement a direct player trading so he can be scammed legally LOL are you a mokitten !?
2 – the TP system is global so the price on the TP is what people are currently willing to pay for a certain item and it prevents scamming very nicely, it is partially the players fault for going outside the system in place to try and get a cheaper price as such making himself vulnerable to scamming, why not make a buy order for a lesser price instead, you would not get them right away but you would not get scammed either !
Like already said here before:
I do feel sorry for your loss but…….
it is indeed your fault for trying to circumvent the systems in place to get a cheaper price this will teach you to always use the Trading Post I guess lesson learned is also warranted here
Some ask for a direct player trading system as if that would make it all better LOLS
it would only legitimize scammers and gold sellers giving them all the power to overcharge or scam people out of money in the back alleys of Guild Wars 2
the Global Trading post system is the best option of any mmorpg out there in terms of economics that is not EVE online ! it may not be perfect but it has far less detrimental consequences for players than any flawed direct player trading ever implemented in any mmorpg outside of EVE online
No. Completely false. You have to have gold sinks in the game to combat inflation. If the net flow of gold into the economy > gold sinks, gold becomes worthless and prices of everything goes up.
Couple things, people don’t use the channels right to begin with. /team for example in WvW, lots of people still use /map even though the idea would be to use /team so you can filter out everything for team related tasks. Resulting in me keeping both /map and /team on so I can see both all the help requests and random shouting matches, where if people split them up accordingly I could avoid seeing people yell at each other for silly things while still seeing we are trying to take this tower or keep.
Secondly, the games (like GW1) that have a trade channel, doesn’t prevent people from using other forms of chatting to buy or sell their items. It still spills over, because sellers and buyers alike recognize that a lot of people are just going to turn off /trade and so they use something else to get their message seen by the most people.
If they add direct trades, I certainly hope a channel comes along so we can filter out some, but regardless adding trading to the game would most definitely result in more spam shouting in the towns like previously mentioned by Chamone.
If you try to get your money back, they won’t give it back. The guy who scammed you keeps the money. I think most people understand not to mail people gold with the high possibility of getting nothing in return. This is why you only trade with people you’ve known for a long time. Go on the TP bid low, and hope your order gets filled. It’s common sense to use the TP, like most people have pointed out in this thread.
You tried to cheat the system (the “taxing” that exists in the TP) and got screwed in the process. You try to blame this on someone else, and get all kitten when people tell you it’s your own fault. Then other gullible people show up and try to build you up saying “it’s okay” and “shame on you” to those of us who are realists and play by the rules.
Certain items would share a picture was the most common way, the wiki even had a page devoted to helping people avoid it: http://www.guildwiki.org/Common_scams and http://www.guildwiki.org/Common_scams/Trade_scams
Well, from what I saw there, people pretty much “policed” it themselves. And there is this added benefit…it has separate channels for trade, lfg, general. Now, general would already be filled with random spam and lfg would be filled with, well, lfg. Trying to trade there would get you msg lost in the other noise so sensible people simply went for /t instead. You’d generally see WTT msg in other channels only if those were dead anyway.
i we had a trading option like EVERY SINGLE GAME EVER, we wouldn’t have this kind of problems so blame anet.
GW1 had a trading option just like every other game out there, and still had these kinds of problems. The TP protects you from scammers and it does it very well.
The fee not only acts as a money sink, it also discourages players from asking more then an items worth.
It happened all the time, there where atleast a dozen or so different scams used throurg the years. 1 I remember was selling selling globs of frozen ecros as ectos. There where several others with items that used the same icon. There was also the “close the trade window and switch item or money” scam. Selling duplicates (which effected a lot of other games as well). Drop the item so I can see what it looks like. Then there was the consumable scams which where pretty easy to pull off.
Most where mainly due to either the buyer not knowing what it was they where really buying, or being unfamilier with the trade window. The point is, it did happen. If you use the TP, there is a 0% chance of you getting ripped off. Players are going to rip you off, they are going to rob your guild stash. Anet put controls and tools in to the game to protect the players, but they will not protect you if you don’t use them.
First off, you don’t “deserve it” but still kinda do. Second, you can report someone for scamming and they’ll review their chat logs. Ie he says I’ll send you this, never does. He’ll likely get banned
Too bad this poor sap wasn’t lured outside the city, with gold in his pocket, happy and oblivious.
Only to get gang ganked by a few players and have all his gold and belongings taken off his corpse.
I miss the good ole’ days.
If you reported the scammer, you should be getting your stuff back shortly and the scammer will be banned. At least that’s what I’ve heard happens in most cases. A few things to remember tho:
1) secure person to person trading will never be implemented into the game. This is to avoid having map chats completely filled with trade chat.
2) make sure your mail is empty when you trade person to person. I have almost been accused of scamming before until the person realized their mailbox was full xD
