Down ranking / Leveling question.
No, there’s no way to turn it off because they don’t want level 80s to completely decimate the low level zones. However, if you are properly geared and active in combat (ie. dodging, using your skills intelligently, and not just Leroy Jenkinsing into a group of 25 mobs), you should have no trouble soloing things. You should also have no trouble helping out lower level characters.
Obviously, this game just might not be for your friends. But it doesn’t sound like they (and you, to an extent) really tried to adapt their playing to how the game works. I think people should actually try to play the game before just quitting without understanding how things work.
You must be doing something wrong, because with my level 80’s I can solo most (if not all) group events with easy in the starter and the follow up maps.
With the current system you can help your friends that are starting greatly with your higher level character, but if you are just a bit above the level then you can just help a bit more and no simply decimate everything as you are probably imagining.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
As a properly spec’d level 80 you will have a distinct advantage over players who are at-level for the zone you are playing in. At level 80 you have access to all your traits, better stats* on gear, stronger rune and sigil selection, and access to more diverse consumable items.
The downscaling system makes it to where higher leveled players are running under Beast Mode vs your typical MMO with no scaling system that lets max leveled players run around effectively as God Mode.
In your case, OP, I would suggest you revise your setup as being able to help low leveled players is very much achievable and noticeable. Though don’t expect to single handedly carry your friends as they still need to put in the effort to make sure they stay alive.
If anything, I feel that the scaling feature is one of the selling points of the game. Player in level 1-15 zones have a fair chance at events and tagging mobs while scaled players are still rewarded for entering a lower leveled zone.
*At higher levels you run into Attribute Caps which means that some stats on your panel have a cap that they are set to when entering a lower level. Though, few players need to be mindful of this boundary as this requires particular selections in builds and gear choices.

Being over powered in low level zones with lowbie friends is a blast.
Thank you for your responses, and I suppose we’ll just stay in other online games that allow this then. Oh well.
This has been brought up before on these forums, many times. Many, many times. There are usually a couple of people who agree that downlevelng is not a good thing, but a boatload of posters who think it’s a great thing. I’m one of those latter posters.
One of the things I can’t stand about most MMOs is that I’m stuck in a few end game zones and that’s basically it. In Guild Wars 2, I can go anywhere. The world is my oyster. Downleveling is truly one of the better features of this game, and without it, I don’t know how likely I am to stay.
What’s the point of creating an entire world and wasting most of it? It never made sense to me before and it doesn’t make sense to me now.
I like downleveling, it just doesn’t downlevel you enough in GW2. I still one shot mobs in low level zones and 2-3 shot mobs in med to high level zones.

So people have explained that you can gear up at level 80, return to low level zones and 1- or 2-shot mobs, and that’s still not good enough for you?
I think you already had your mind made up when you started this thread.

You don’t seem to understand how down leveling actually works. If you go to a starter zone as a level 80 you’ll get exactly what you’re after.
I didn’t care for the idea at first either but it’s grown on me.
With down leveling you get rewards tailored to level 80 where ever you go. The way you want it you only get useful rewards in 10% of the places you go.

Traits and gear stats your using? …
i find what you say is weird im not the best geared in the game yet i can help friends and i 2 shot everything when i go to some of the lower leveled zones hell u can help ur friends with the downscaling until something like orr but thats just my opinion

Sadly, after NPE, gear/levels/trait mean even more in lower zones, I’d love to tune it down even more so that challenge level stays more or less the same barring the player skill which can even make on-level chars look OP
I think what he really wanted is even naked in the starter zone be able to 1 hit kill champions and bosses, and every mob cause 0 damage on him.

Obviously, from the OP’s response, he/she is looking for something where the character can come into a lowbie area and impress their friends with his character’s godliness….lol. Funny thing is, as pointed out by Aer in the above response……you can do that in GW2, IF you know what you’re doing with your level 80 character.
I, for one, love the upleveling/downleveling system of this game. Makes it a lot more fun when you’re helping friends.
Mmo players with a screw loose vs mmo players with two screws loose. All very important stuff.

Maybe the problem is friends who want you to carry them, rather than having to do some things for themselves. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d prefer friends who prefer to contribute to what we’re doing.

Going into a level 2 zone as a level 80 and brainlessly one shotting everything for no point whatsoever is your definition of “a blast”? You and me have much different opinions on what is fun then. That seems incredibly boring to me.
Kind of pathetic to quit a game due to the fact that you can’t impress your friends by one shotting everything in a low level zone LOL
exo 80’s are annoying for levelers already as they do so much damage that you don’t even get credit for kills unless you are in their party. Spamming staff 1 on guard can mean that even people in your party don’t get credit as they havent tagged the mob yet before you killed it lol
the only thing you can’t do that you can do in say wow is power level a lowbie by carrying them through low level dungeons
(edited by dodgycookies.4562)
yeah as other said you can pretty much do all that, my full condition build mesmer kills mobs in 1-15 zones in 2-3 hits max on some of the tough mobs from the direct dmg my (ergo i ONLY have base 900something power). If i were to decide i would prefer the scaling to be much harsher in fact
Interesting, and here I was, handicapping myself when playing with low level friends. I’ll either handicap myself, or using a low level character to play with them.
Personally I keep 2 lvl 0 basic daggers for me to swap into when I’m in lower level zones.
Then I swap to dire gear while using power attacks. That way, I basically feel like a lowbie, except with extremely high heath and toughness.
I found it more fun to help my friends as if I’m an actual party member, instead of a carry.
where bashing people over the head with a stick deals more damage than a stab to the heart.

Oh god!
The downlevelling system is currently horrible. It makes properly geared level 80 characters with decent builds completely dominate all low level content. In fact, such a player can usually solo veterans and champs in low maps within seconds.
I don’t know what game you’re playing, but it isn’t GW2. If anything ,we need this system to be nerfed to present more of a challenge to seasoned players.
My friends who are new to the game can never play with me because I kill all the mobs before they can even land a hit… really balanced. This fact alone has kept me from inviting any more friends to the game, because we can’t really play together until they also reach lv80 (outside of dungeons and fractals, at least).
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

Yeah you and your friends have a problem, not the game. Tsk… Still having trouble doing low level maps with a level 80, I was using Rares and helping out friends do their map completion or story. And they even get mad when I kill the mobs for them, which I would feel the same if I only asked to be accompanied and not carried.
Thought it would be nice if our stats would be properly down scaled properly to the stats of that map, the only way to do this is if you strip your equipment.

Naked 80s everywere booyah
I’ve probably not called it by the correct term, but I’m curious about the feature where you get lowered in level to match the area you’re in.
This feature is annoying. I was wondering if there’s a way to turn this off, or if there’s been any consideration of making this feature optional.
This does not help getting friends into the game. If they come to a title I’ve been in for a while they expect me, as a higher level character to aid them greatly. This is not possible with this current system. As such, we’ve ended up in a different game than here. They tried, bought GW2, and this single feature keeps them from returning.
Please consider changing this system.
Thank you.
Lol. I do have to question your skill and sanity here. Even down-scaled, all my characters (and I have one 80 of each class) can mow down lower zone mobs so fast, its completely and ridiculously overpowered. And you are complaining you cannot help your friends in lower level zones? Seriously?
OP must not be geared or traited very well. Maybe not traited at all. I have to hold back on my level 80s when I’m with a low level char. Let them hit the mobs first to get credit. He should look over his traits, see if he has any at all, and check about the proper gear stats. He could be wearing some mixture of gear, not a coherent build.
ANet may give it to you.
no downscaling works fine in games like diablo 2 where you can go to your own instance
but in an open world game like gw2 max lvl palyers would destroy the experience for new lowlvl players totally
and when properlly geared you should be able to wreck anything in seconds in lowlvl zones… so the problem is on your side
get a meta build and proper gear and you can carry your friends easily for the first zones
