Guild Wars 2

So I bought this game earlier today and im at 28% with 7.8GB downloaded, when I have looked st the file size for this game most people say its 15GB roughly but that should mean im at 50% already. So my question is does the percentage include patching or is the game size a lot bigger then i thought? (50% for download 50% for patching)

The percentage has to due to with the number of files not the % of space.

So the percentage is how many of the files ive downloaded, meaning it doesn’t include the patching

The number of files should include the patches as well, afaik.

I just installed it on my wife’s laptop for her to try out. I don’t remember many details, as I was playing on my desktop while it was installing and patching, but I think it took 2-3 hours all told. That being said, I did the initial install from disk, so I’m sure that will make a large difference. Basically, start your download/install/patch, and go about your day as if you weren’t going to be playing today. Check on it periodically to make sure everything is still running okay, and then when it’s finally done, it’ll feel like a pleasant surprise that you’ll actually get to play. Though today’s technology is pretty great, moving large amounts of data is still a computationally instensive process. Good luck, sir… or madam, as the case may be, and I hope you enjoy it. :-P

Thanks man, I decided t get it digital because its 50% of this week so it will take longer then the disk installation but either way I dont think I’ll be able to play it today

When files are downloaded they are downloaded and compressed into the the gw2.dat file this is done to save space and make it so that you don’t have a bazillion files in the folder.

Since the file is created and modified by adding and changing files inside of it dynamically, its size and CRC will vary in different installations of the game. Also, many files are downloaded in a compressed format and will only be decompressed when you encounter them in-game.

The minimum requirements for the game is 25gb so expect the game to be anywhere between 15-25 GB of hard drive space.

The percentage is how many “files” that you have downloaded so far. So if it is 50% you have downloaded 50% of the files. Keep in mind a lot of the files are only a few kilobytes in size. It does include all the updates that are currently live in the game. It would not include anything that is no longer in the game.

In short the % tells you vary little on how long it is going to take to download.

Also, anzenketh is quite correct; for the % to accurately represent the amount of time left, it would have to be based on file size, rather than number, and to determine the size of a file takes almost as long as it does to move the file (not actually, but for the sake of argument, it’s close enough with a large number of files). So, the time required to download would be drastically increased by having % indicate actual time, and the first half or so still wouldn’t be very accurate. :-P
So, really, the only scale you have with the current way % works is “short”, “long” and “REALLY KITTENING LONG”, and that’s still not very accurate. Also, this applies to almost anything in digital-land that uses a % to indicate how far it has progressed.

It’s larger than 15gb, when the game first was release it was around 15gb. However more and more content has been added, so naturally it’s much larger now. I actually just downloaded it yesterday. It was around 19gb now.

Also, something to be aware of: Should you stop the downloading procedure for some reason, when you start it up again, it will start at 0%. Do not be alarmed, as it will start counting the percentage of files left to be downloaded. It does not mean you have started over from scratch. It is a bit confusing to new players.
