Hi all,

I decided to upgrade from GW1 yesterday and took advantage of the special offer.

The game took a while to download, I’m not sure how long because I just left the computer running. I downloaded it and played for around an hour last night before bed.

This morning, I had a spare hour before I had to go to work. Firstly, it wanted me to verify my location as it said I was signing in from a different place (specifically Fleet in the UK, apparently, I live in the UK but at the other end of the country). I verified my email because I knew it was me even if my ISP said I was in Fleet rather than London.

It then started downloading stuff again, not just a fairly quick patch but hundreds of thousands of files. I have come back from work for lunch and it’s now at 49% with 148,000 files still to download. It hasn’t been running continuously because it goes into sleep mode automatically if I leave it for too long but it was still left for a long time. It’s only downloading at a rate of 2-4MB/sec, which seems quite slow to me. At any rate, it’s going to be another couple of hours at least before it finishes.

What is it downloading?! It’s like it’s downloading the entire game again.

When I logged into the forums it asked for email authentication again, the third time it has asked me to do so despite ticking the box to remember my network. It still thinks I’m in Fleet…it’s going to get very annoying if I have to verify my email every time I want to do something.

All in all, I’m quite confused about what’s going on. Any ideas and what I should do?

Hope to actually get playing the game properly soon!

Thanks in advance,

CB

You may have a dynamic IP address, which is why it asks you to authenticate each time. It will eventually ‘learn’ the range of your IP. You can contact your ISP and ask about it.

As for re-downloading the game files, I have no idea. Unless, your computer put the .dat file in a place the game could not find?

Welcome to Tyria, and happy adventuring! =)

Some mobile connection devices connect with a different IP every time, that might be why you need the email authentication again and again. As for the download issue, my best guess is that your launcher can’t access the game files properly, perhaps you installed the game in a protected folder, or your security blocks the launcher?

Okay…I get that.

I use a WiFi dongle to connect to the home WiFi. Google Chrome is constantly showing a proxy error message so I have to go into the LAN settings menu and untick the “use proxy server for your LAN” box. It’s quite annoying.

It’s not asked me again since…until this morning. I have a day off work and fancied playing a bit. It seems to be downloading the entire game again?! Another 30,000 files. Goodness knows how long it will take.

I’ve not had to do anymore email authentication, which is nice.

Hmm…I’m going to rummage around the data files and pretend I know what I’m doing.

Thanks folks!

Kinda looking forward to playing again; I’m enjoying it otherwise!

I think the 30,000 files you downloaded today would of been yesterdays update/patch and not re-downloading the entire game again.

Ahh, okay, but it still seems huge? Still only at 60% from my last message…the computer goes to sleep after half an hour so it’s going to be at least an hour to download the patch?

I have a feeling what may have happened (in addition to the patch). The .tmp, .dat and the readme has come up on the desktop (which happened last time, though not the time before). My wife may have deleted them thinking they were junk files (both of us like the desktop quite empty).

I just downloaded the game to the default location…why that’s the desktop, I’m not sure.

Anyway, does anyone know where I should move these three files so I can just play the game normally without it being on the desktop?

Those files you are DLing are probably from Yesterday’s Content Patch. We get them every two weeks During the Living World Story Missions. You can check teh Game Release’s Page for more information!

You can make a folder anywhere on you hard drive to put them in as long as the game.dat and gw2.exe files are in the same folder and make sure you create a shortcut to the exe file.
You may want to search you hard drive for the missing game.dat file as well its just shy of 20gb and having extra copies laying about will eat up your disk space

This.

The files can be stored anywhere on your computer (wherever seems most sensible to you). But they all need to be in the same folder. If you move one you need to move the others or the launcher (.exe) will think they haven’t been downloaded and start over.

Checking for existing files is a good idea too. If you move the most complete one to the location where you want the game it will save having to download a bunch of stuff again.
