Downloads too big
There are large updates every 2 weeks and some patches for the next few days afterwards usually. This is an MMO so you have to play on an up to date client so no there isn’t a way around it.
Gandara
this is annoying, they should slow down with LS content and get it done right the first time, it’s like every time they add more LS they need another 6-7 patches on top of it for bug fixes…
new content every 2 weeks is obviously too much for anet
i just start enjoying my night then a patch, next day patch, day after another patch, right on my playing hour
How would you go around it, hm?
Send a letter to Anet and ask them to pretty please send a physical disc copy of the latest update back to you?
Lol…
Just start the updater every now and then even if you’re not going to play, to keep the game updated.
Problem solved. Updates take like 20 seconds anyway.
Unless your connection is really that bad, every update shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. The minor patches coming after end in a matter of minutes or even seconds.
you guys didn’t heard about all the OLD and NEW mmo’s that can be played while updating right ?
you guys don’t play many mmo-s I bet
-Total War: Warhammer
-Guild Wars 2

So what’s stopping you from playing those MMOs that have these features you like and instead wish to complain here?
Assuming you don’t leave your computer running 24/7:
Create a shortcut to Gw2 and place it under the Startup folder in your Start Menu. Alternatively, you can achieve the same thing by using the task scheduler or by adding a registry entry.
For the shortcut to Gw2, you want to add the command line options -image and -nopatchui. The shortcut target should look something like:
“X:\Path\To\Gw2.exe” -image -nopatchui
-image causes the launcher to fully update and exit, while -nopatchui hides the launcher, which you may or may not want. The problem with hiding the launcher is, you can’t start the game normally while the other launcher is updating.

Hermes is right, unless you have a really bad connection (or log in only once every few months!) it shouldn’t take any longer than 15 mins tops for a big update.
I’m in New Zealand and here they are only just laying down cable through the country so 99% of us are still only using broadband and even with that, it only takes me 5-10 mins for a big update each 2 weeks and any patches for those are hardly a few mins .
Heck even when downloading the 2 weekly big update I usually don’t have enough time to read all the patch notes for it before it has done it’s download lol.
Well I have what passes as minimal broadband in the US, 3Mb, so this last 300MB big patch took about 18-20 minutes. Which is also why I backup the game weekly because downloading the entire game from scratch is 16+ hours for me.
RIP City of Heroes
lol no

Yes well unfortunetly there are still underdeveloped countries in the world, like the US.
That’s just the way it is :/
500mbps/1gbps was sooooo last year.
I have bandwidth caps. Loved the game and community but it eats too much bandwidth. Can’t play it anymore.

You mean games like GW2? (And GW1.)
You only need to download the essential files (the ones the game needs to run at all) to be able to log in and play, then it will continue to update in the background, prioritising files as needed – for example if you enter a new map it will stop whatever it was doing and download that map 1st, then go back to other stuff.
There’s even a marker on the update bar which says “playable” to show you the point at which you’ll be able to login. Or you can login as soon as it starts updating and it will load the game as soon as it gets to that point.
It’s only really noticeable with big updates (or in my case when I recently had to re-download the entire game after messing with my hard drive). Small updates are often either all essential files or all non-essential files so the ‘playable’ marker doesn’t appear.
But if you’re on a private computer and you trust all the other people with access to it you can just save your username and password and click the button to run the game automatically and then all you need to do is double-click the shortcut and the game will run the launcher, log you in and launch the game as soon as it can with no further input from you.

It’s 3 years old thread. I think OP’s downloads are done by now.

And we have the streaming client now. So you don’t have to wait for the whole patch to download in order to play.

Not even 10:00 and I think you just won the post of the day.
Oops, totally missed that. I just saw ‘November’ and ‘x hours ago’ and didn’t realise it was an old thread.
