Dragonhunter revealed... meh
It’s not that bad sheesh. You guys think it’s the end of the world. Sure the name doesn’t in the slightest bit even remotely fit with guardian theme but it’s not bad. If it went to Ranger and they got something else then you’d think it would be great.
No…cause it doesn’t fit there either….
Fits there quite well actually. Rangers are well wild hunters, they have lots of traps and basically are somewhat game hunters. Though it really doesn’t seem to fit with guardians, I’d rather have Valkyrie even with the female connotation.
“Hunter” sure
“Dragonhunter” describes everyone

True but apart from the guardian like skills, the lore behind the specialization screams warrior not guardian. Dragon hunter doesn’t seem like a thing guardians would even care about doing.

Yes, I agree “big game hunter” does seem more warrior-esk than guardian. I’m fine with the general bow and trap, long range support concept they described for the guardian spec. The name just doesn’t suit it though.
You all forget that all this is in an early development stage.
So nothing is set in stone.
But i feel like this is not the last time I will be saying this in the next couple of days.
Also please don’t forget that nothing is off the table.
“’Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself though, not a Montague.
What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O! be some other name:
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name;
And for that name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.”
Oddly enough, I expected more complaints about the spec being ranged support than about the name. Go figure.
“Dragonhunter Revealed!”
ROFLMAO!!! Wow…just, “Wow”…
Next up: We turn the Ranger class into a Guardian! Stay tuned!!
EDIT: “Bunny Thumper” has my vote for “Best new specialization”
You all forget that all this is in an early development stage.
So nothing is set in stone.
Actually it is with Anet.
Once it is officially announced on the website they have NEVER changed anything.
So Duckhunter .. I mean DRAGON Hunter (sorry my bad), it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGhQ2BDt4VE
sounds like the name doesn’t fit the description to me. just doesn’t sound right.
Archeage = Farmville with PK
I would’ve gone for something more “guard-like”. Something like Dragon Warden or such, Dragon Hunter’s sounds too offensive-based for guardians (to me at least).
The bow skills look like they could work OK, but aren’t exciting at the moment. The trait path we will have to wait and see on. They could well have something up their sleeve.
Name wise, I would far prefer they use something like the old name that implies their new extended role. This is why I think “vindicator” would be a better name. Actually, I think “avenger” would be better but it has other associations.
Oh my goodness Arbiter yes please!
Next specialisations are
Thief – Shadow Ninja or Dark Shadow
Warrior – Scull Crusher
Engineer – Technician
Necromancer – Death Bringer
Warrior – Scull Crusher
They going to give us too many steroids? Love to see overly beefy Asura cracking their oars in a rowing race.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Seconding bunny thumper. Not liking Dragonhunter.
btw: anyone reading the first designing-of article can note the sudden lack of developer enthusiasm about the name and how it felt exactly spot on for them.
to arenanet’s responsible design people: Just iterate over it please. Give us sentinel or avenger or something more natural than this.
(btw, Coincidentally while digging for oldschool stuff on pvx, I found that one of the barrage/pet builds was a Paragon/Ranger with Anthem of Flame. So yes, there’s precedence for good stuff as well)
I guess the correct name for this would be a Divine Hunter but that also sounds silly.
Duck Hunter sounds good.
(Other than that, I’d rather call it monk, and Tadaa, backline support with long range, plus a happy GW1 crowd!)
Dracomancer incoming!
Hunting specific things is never a good name example
I won’t defend the specialization name under the Guardian profession, as I agree that it doesn’t seem to really fit there.
However, hunting specific things is never a good name example grated on me. It’s a very common thing in the fantasy genre, both in fiction and in RPGs. And I’m stating that as someone who makes a living at, and has been award nominated in, both the fiction and table-top RPG writing/design industries.

Sadly I’m in agreement here…. The ‘Dragonhunter’ title seems far too cheesy, even by ArenaNet standards. But in the long run does it really matter? Outside of hardcore RP circles I don’t really see the issue.
EDIT: I don’t expect ArenaNet will change the name, regardless of its relatively poor reception, but I will throw my support in for a change towards ‘Arbiter’.
(edited by Azhure.1857)
Honestly they should have named the guardian elite spec ‘archer’ because it seems so similar to this: http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Archer
Archer would actually fit with both the guardian theme and his specialization theme, at least that’s what I think. But I suppose ‘archer’ sounds too similar to ‘ranger’, which could be confusing.

I love the concept of a long-range support class with some condi pressure. This is exactly what I wanted for my guardian.
But the name… I dunno…. could you perhaps change it Anet? Dragonhunter sounds really dumb to be honest.
I don’t care much for the name, but my god, it’s so obviously clear that they literally had no idea what they’re doing for Guardian. I bet you that all of the conditions that we’re supposed to get are just subpar variants of already existing skills. I guess we were in such a “good place” that they had to make a specialization that deficates on everything a Guardian is and should be. They didn’t even bother taking the best parts of the profession they copied. Fantastic work yet again.
On the bright side, at this rate, we might get a specialization worthy of our class in 6 years?
For the sake of input/output.
Guardians have been lacking in:
- Ranged attacks
- Soft CCs
- Mobility
- Condition builds (some may argue)
Devs tried to provide Guardians with
- Long Bow
- Immobilizes
- Another leap
- Modified burning mechanics
So they met each disparity with a response, just not the way we expected. Does it make it wrong? I don’t know yet.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the name is irrelevant. I don’t care if it’s called Bubblegum Sparkfart. What I care about is the skills, mechanics, and traits that go with the specialization. That being said, I’ll wait to pass judgement until I see it in action.

the dude that came up with dragonhunter must have though like you, thats why we ended up with a crap of a name.
Disappointed reveal
Imo, the guard/dragon specialization in long bows makes him another jack of all trades master of none. Hunters wannabe, and yet, probably hunters will still do it better. Till now we were warriors wannabe with the difference that warriors were doing it better anyway.
As frontliner, guard will have to take a step back, altho the ideea of frontal aoe shield might save the day. We cannot know untill the all package is tested together and see what we can keep from original guard and what we can add from the new mastery.
I dreamed about axes so much on my guard , dreaming about dual axes throwing ricochet but well, bow…lets see how that goes…dream shattered.
As for name, “hunter” needs to gtfo. Need a replacement with anything else: dragonslasher, dragonbane, dragonflame, dragonnanny, anything but hunter. Let the hunters have their originality and give guards theirs. Even the old Paragon sounded mighty.
Thumbs up for thumper bunny btw…

I’m reserving judgement, for the most part.
There have been calls for new weapons, and for existing weapons to be ported to other professions, almost since launch. So, what is the point of adding a weapon (new, or just new to the prof.) if it does not add options to that profession? What would the point be of adding options that the profession already has? Should additions to a profession not play and feel differently than the existing options? What did people expect from a guardian elite spec?
+1 to xinskspillx. Paragon would certainly have made sense lore-wise.
That argument would make sense if Guardians had a ranged option right now. Currently we have Scepter and its attacks are so slow it can be dodged by my dead grandmother.
What argument? I’m not arguing against LB, and the poster I +’d talked about Paragon with Longbow, so I have no idea where you got that.
That said, though, ANet is touting this Elite Spec as a support spec. What that says to me is low damage coefficients as trade-offs for the support — just like with Water Magic. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m skeptical that LB will be a high damage weapon for Guardian.
I just got home and haven’t had a chance to read all the press and feedback about the Guardian specialization, but it seems very tepid, seeing as I was really enthusiastic because I was looking forward to Guardians getting the Longbow for a character I wanted to re-roll to be more about support and smiting.
The name: I understand that we are going into Maguma after Mordremoth, but Dragonhunter seems to understate how these skills are going to be useful in anything other than hunting dragons. (" ‘Paragon’ is right out. Let’s hunt dragons!").
The video: Seemed to muddy the waters on what this specialization brings to he game.
Aside from the wings (Yay, more wings!), it seemed the standard “pew pew” and then a big critter was denied entry into the nightclub. Cut to black.
The blog post: I liked somewhat, but it leaves room for details I hope the livestream can touch on in detail.
ANet will have to bring some grade A hype to deal with this lukewarm reveal of what seems to be its most appreciated specialization.
Hype and a kittenload of cookies.
Joining the crowd of disappointed. I want to be the savior in the rye, not some smelly hairy dragon hunter with wings. Also for over a year in PvP haven’t seen a single dragon. That means they are already an endangered specie. Leave them alone. Save the dragons!
Paragon
Justiciar
Vanguard

Arbiter

Warden
Take your pick, all better than what we have now. Considering that realease is quite a bit far away, they can still change it.
Dragon hunter is a really cool name. Aka Dovahkiin or “Dragonkind Hunter Born” or
“Born hunter of the Dragonkind”. Just imagine all the potential!
Dragon Hunter’s Utility skill:
Wuld Nah Kest (whirlwind sprint):

Yol Toor Shul (Fire Breath)

I wonder if it’s gonna be straining for my right hand… Slight elbow nerve root damage, picked guard and ele as mains since they were less demanding on mouse control.
You REALLY had to make another thread about this?
TIL: People will complain about anything.

You REALLY had to make another thread about this?
TIL: People will complain about anything.
A lot of other threads were about the Elite Specialization itself, while mine is just about the name. I really have no problem with the skills and other facets of the Spec.
Also, I don’t know if you realize, but a game where “style” and the shade of pink you use for your shoes to look good is important, a spec name does actually matter. I mean, would you play your class if it was named Vomitmancer? I really doubt it. It would still be better then Dragon Hunter.
You can’t really justify the name without seeing what the class do first.
Just wait for today’s twitch on the class. Maybe you think the class is cool after you see the skills and mechanic.

My issues with the name are these
- It’s named after something that literally every single class does already in-game. Mesmer elite is Chronomancer. That’s cool. No other class can control time at all, then out comes anet to say that guardians are named after something that everyone does. That’s not a specialisation. That’s not unique. If I was a guardian main I’d feel unimportant because of the lack of thought and uniqueness that’s gone into this “name”
- It’s two words mashed together. It’s not “Dragon Hunter”. It’s “Dragonhunter”. This sort of thing just does not work in English. You get it in other languages (the first thought is German where words are mashed together to make one all the time), but in English it sounds clunky and just plain wrong.
I’m not completely, totally and utterly outraged by it, but I am very disappointed.
So long Treeface.

As someone who played over 1000 hours of Skyrim i can safely say, you played too much of it.
Leave the dragonborn in skyrim.
Dragon Hunter is a amazing name
People only upset because there prediction didnt come true, there for theu are disapointed and feel like they lost.
Normal Human behavior
get over it guys the name u was so sure would come didnt come instead anet showed creativity and thinking outside the Box.
I love to say in the Future at Tequatle
“step aside guys let a Dragon Hunter handle this !”
This probably belongs in the HoT forum, in one of the other 10 threads about the same topic.
I thought “Dragon Knight” would be something better.
“Dragonknight” is a class in ESO, so I doubt that’d be on the table, though I do prefer it over the current “name”.
inb4 “Dragonundertaker” for necro

Hey we got rangers useless traps….so give them our symbol of protection pls on their staff. autoattack 3rd chain with 2 sec cast time.
All classes will get good stuff except guardians, heck we are at good place, just take rangers attacks , make them bluish without #2 skill and 3# stealth and 5# knockdown, (yea dont give us that best stuff pew pew pew), give them traps which noone uses (especially range builds ), put some dragon head on plain bow, nerf traps even more, use existing ugly armor skins, make up a name that will everyone love (to laugh at), put all stuff together in 2 hours of programming → voila! A Dragonhunter.
(I realized it would be crap after seeing overall changes to Guardians traits few weeks ago – there were almost nonexistant – we still have a trait for falling dmg yaaaay)
Matrix:
“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill (scroll for class change)—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill(dragonhunter)—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I’m offering is the truth. Nothing more.”
Can I have a blue pill?
