Dragonhunter revealed... meh
lol @ “Dragonhunter”, very creative … so everyone else fighting the Claw of Jormag are chopped liver.
I know, right? My engineer worked hard during Tequatl Rising, and still shows up every day to beat him back in to the sea. But let’s just give guardians all the credit. Why you gotta be glory hogs, Guards? (/ ºuº)/ ‡
The name is completely irrelevant. Man you people complain about the dumbest things.
Then let’s just call them Armored Pew or Brave Little Toasters since names obviously don’t matter here. Names are not completely irrelevant, they are part of the system of identity. Do I think people make a bigger deal out of it than necessary? Sure, but that does not automatically mean the name simply doesn’t matter.
I don’t hate the name, and part of me does think it’s kind of cool. But then there is another part of me that can’t get past the fact that every person playing this game is a “Dragon Hunter.” Unless I guess you do nothing but WvW and PvP. Thank you, by the way, non PvE-ers for keeping us safe from our non-scaley enemies.
TL;DR:
Names matter, but should not be the end of the world. Also, longbows! (>^-^)>}
id say instead of arguing about the name on and on (i think anet gets it now that the name is not cool) u should rather think about the important stuff
the balancing
some already mentioned it, when all profession get a really strong elite specs, they are probably forced to play this to stay competive.
Guard has a big problem, its build variety. Guards do not have a condi option like every other class. They have bunker/support and off guard. something between seems not to work. They just have two offensive builds and the only real difference is one is GS and one the hammer. Spirit plays almost noone.
Support and bunker are the ways guards are forced to play
With the spec anet could make a change and bring an offensive ranged fighter. like mentioned – like a quincy.
Another support build with bow is the last thing guard needs, they have enough such builds

the skrittfinisher was my idea!
I’m sorry to disappoint the naysayers of these auspicious forums, but as someone who mains a support guardian I’ll be playing this specialization and then some. The fact that the long bow is going to be the weapon of choice is, to me, a god send, as the currently available long distance weapons are incredibly short distance, making playing a support role difficult when trying to fight as well. As to the name… WHO THE HECK CARES??!! A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…

Long bow for a Guardian. This proves the lack of direction and focus of the anet devs. I have never seen a game go so sour so quickly. hot is the death knell of gw2. if you want backline support then give it to a backline character. why confuse the guardian? am i frontline or backline? So now you’ll have 10 frontline guards and 10 backline guards, why don’t we all just play guards? keep waffling on anet.
I have mixed feelings on this myself.
Name is lackluster. I saw a plethora of names before the reveal that were 10x cooler and appropriate than what was given. But whatever, I’ll just continue to refer my Guardian as a Guardian and ignore the elite name altogether.
The virtue changes are promising, especially Courage. Adding in a bit more active play to them, even if Renewal sounds a bit of a pain. Good idea for sure.
Happy to have a longbow as part of the new weapons, but worried about it being well… a worthless ranged weapon. We’ll see how it goes there.
Very unlikely I’ll even be touching traps.
Why would I give up the much superior support and offensive capabilities of the other Guardian skills? Especially when they don’t require an enemy to walk over them, don’t have a delay timer upon activation (if they are continuing with the changes of traps to the Guard spec as well) and IF the traps provide party support, requires said party to be on said traps or near them which can be counter productive. (If so, what makes them different from an inferior Symbol?)
It seems weird. Would probably only spec for this Elite for the Virtue changes and the bow. If the bow turns out to be as useless as the traps are expected to be, I probably won’t use the spec.

Why give backline stuff to a character that already have access to it? The whole point of the Elite Specializations is to give characters access to playing styles they didn’t have before.
You also seem to completely ignore the fact that people have been asking for a ranged style for Guardians since more or less release.
Krall Peterson – Warrior
Piken Square
The point of the elite specializations is to expand the roles of the professions. So if guards suck at backline support now, dragon hunters will make up for that.
And backline support is sooo useful in PvE, right? But hey, at least it will work in the WvW pirate ship meta.
Why would I replace my 100% block aegis virtue of courage with an inferior position dependent version of it?
I have an even better question – why a barrier that protects the character and everyone behind him on a trait meant for a backline support spec?

This is something that was on my mind ever since I heard of “specializations.”
I was thinking if each has it’s own name and if there are going to be more in the future, then eventually there will be ones with stupid names. It’s obvious because eventually it will be very hard to find a good name which will be related to the theme of a class.
I bet it was hard to come up with the name “tempest” for the elementalists.
In fact a tempest is a storm so it can be related only to wind and water, but it has not much to do with earth and certainly not with fire.
I think the name came from “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare where a wizard called Prospero uses a spirit of wind to summon a storm (tempest).
How can “dragonhunter” not be stupid or at least unoriginal?
The great goal of GW2 is killing the elder dragons and their dragon minions.
So everyone regardless of class is a dragon hunter, but now there will be “dragonhunter” dragon hunters too.
So yeah since this is already a good start we can expect other great names in the future like these:
- clown (mesmer)
- undertaker (necromancer)
- gardener (ranger)
- plumber (engineer)
Maybe they will give every class a Dragon prefix name specialization That way we can all Eragon roleplay together <3
This seems like a good place for a “Cool story, bro.”

OMG don’t give them ideas!
I thought “Dragon Knight” would be something better.
The name would be more fitting to Warriors. Despite that, I’m still pumped for it.
Heh this is exactly what I said. The community suggestions were much better. The changes to virtues sound good but the new abilities being all traps is just so unimaginative just like the mesmers being all wells was. Surely they could have mined more abilities from GW1.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro

You’ve never heard of a firestorm or a sandstorm?
I’m not really sure why people think Dragonhunter is so terrible. For a Norn or Asura guardian it would be suitable considering what the dragons have done to them. For a Sylvari it could be to prove he isn’t a puppet of Mordremoth. For a Charr it could just be a role within whatever order she’s in. Humans I don’t know; they just seem to be more interested in politics than anything else.
But people will feel what they feel, no skin off my nose.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
First of all Guardian is a Soldier, not an Adventurer, per classification of professions.
Second, due to this definition, Guardian don’t hunt, they protect, thus the “hunter” part of the name doesn’t make sense in the world of Tyria.
Third, the name Guardian derived from the word “guardia” meansing a watch, a guard, a sentry, or warden.
So what are the most appropriate names?
1) Light Warden
2) Light Watchman
3) Light Keeper
4) Light Protector
5) Light Sleeper
There is nothing “dragon” nor “hunter” about the Guardian.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
Really, that name is terrible and childish.I did not expect this from Anet…they better change this to Seraph or something ASAP !
so bad… and not just the name, everything

Well…besides that.

They should just drop the Dragon name. We’re all technically Dragon Hunters going after Modremoth. Guardians are primarily about protection, so it doesn’t make sense to have them “hunting” in the first place.

If anything I take Harlequin for my Mesmer, thank you very much.
I am ready throw my rings on the enemies and tell them terrible joke, while doing some aweome acrobatic flips.
Gravedigger for necromancer would also be cool. Though I bet he could fight the undertaker for its name

See, this is part of the problem with players perception here. I don’t think Anet wants to pigeonhole their profession concepts into things like “Guardians = Protection”, therefore as a profession, Guardians only do protection.
Is Dragon Hunter the best they could do? I don’t know and it doesn’t really matter. What I do know is that specializations are going to allow me to play outside my ‘Guardian = protector" role in the game and crush people’s ideas of what the profession should be. That’s a NICE thing and it’s an important thing because we don’t decide what the professions do; that’s Anet’s job.

Gameplay wise I’m so hyped, skills can easily be made so that they don’t feel strange on guard.
But the name.
The godkitten name is JOKE. If I wanted to main ranger i would do that. Meanwhile I didn’t and I started feeling like a traitor some time ago because of having rangers on my account.
As for names I’ll throw you some from your franchise in some way (general specialization, not neccessairly this one): Zealot, Paragon, Justicar (this one i would find fitting for present specialization), Confessor.
And some others: Paladin, Prophet, Crusader (this one I would find fitting for present specialization)
Yeah I don’t really play the game any longer – whaddya think I am doing on forums?

You do realize that most of the names you threw in here have either negative connotations from the game lore, or are grossly overused in the MMO industry anyway, right? Most of those are ranks in the White Mantle.

To all who say that name doesn’t matter let me ask you something. How did you name your character? Is it “aagdfgsfasedf” or something meaningful? Do you wear your titles and do you have favorite ones? Would you rather have “Combat Healer” title or “The Sunbringer”? That’s why name matters!
Like Wp said it sounds more like a title than a specialization. You’re like Dragonhunter and underneath you name is a title “Great Jungle Wurm Slayer”. lol
- undertaker (necromancer)
Oh lawd! I hope Anet uses this song for the necro’s preview video.

:’)
I hope they keep up their multi-ontology sense making.
“I’m not even a dragon, you idiot!” XD
Coolest part of that video was the new Monster in it that got revealed.
I guess there was some guy in draconic armor shooting a bow or something too? I dunno, wasnt really watching…

Too specifically related to the LS rather than being it’s own thing.

As much as I would love to see “Paragon” come back as a name, I’m not terribly upset with “Dragon Hunter.” Lore-wise, it kinda makes sense with them being the “ultimate enemy” (whether they are or not, we don’t know) and keepers of peace and justice and blah blah blah… I see where they might have been going. Still an awkward name though.
Also, remember guys that a lot of this probably isn’t fleshed out completely yet. A lot has changed for each profession between their own announcement and when the game was actually released. Mind you, Chronomancer was an idea that they’ve been playing with for year since GW1, so of course it’s concepts are more fleshed out than this specialization. Justing giving ANet the benefit of the doubt.
As for traps, I really hope that they’re ground targeting or the spec has skills that allow you to move quickly/teleport. i.e., Jump in, change the shape of the battlefield, get out. Their AoE could also be really big making it more likely that they’ll be triggered. A trapped back-line that also buffs your allies could be powerful when trying to hold positioning in to create a sort of “safe zone.”

The joke is on you because you didn’t even read what these things are.
They are storms in name only but they are mostly related to strong winds.
A sand or duststorm requires a proper region to happen, while firestorms require already existing fire to happen.
A tempest however mostly refers to a violent storm at sea because they tend to drown ships. That is the reason why Prospero summoned it – to throw a ship off it’s course.
Ever seen a duststorm or firestorm at sea?
I think the name is lame because there are modes where you don’t have any dragons to hunt, at all.
The name isnt that great, but its just a name. It really doesnt matter at the end of the day. Call them something else if you want
Really, that name is terrible and childish.I did not expect this from Anet…they better change this to Seraph or something ASAP !
Seraph is already in use, and even more awful.

Just want to point out that dust storms and fire storms are listed as types of storms…
Storm
Before any disappointment, I’ll wait for the stream. If it became too lame, I’ll most likely quit as Guardian (I already basically don’t play), which one day was my main (I became tired of “In a good place” statement). The sword #3, final hit of sword #1, THE SHIELD, Torch #5 and other minor problems that was ignored over and over just tired me.
But I still have hope. I’ll wait until the last second before rage about anything. Lets wait and pray.
It’s not that bad sheesh. You guys think it’s the end of the world. Sure the name doesn’t in the slightest bit even remotely fit with guardian theme but it’s not bad. If it went to Ranger and they got something else then you’d think it would be great.
Guys. The guardian is in a good place right now.
Think about it. They made a crappy specialization so that we don’t specialize and stay guardians.

No…cause it doesn’t fit there either….
Seems like a reasonable name to me.
I like Dragon Hunter better than Chronomancer.
Next up:
Engineer + Hammer = Bunny Thumper
Warrior + Scepter = Battle Mage
Necro + GS = Death Knight
Ele + Sword = Blade Sorcerer
Thief + Mace = Thug

Fits there quite well actually. Rangers are well wild hunters, they have lots of traps and basically are somewhat game hunters. Though it really doesn’t seem to fit with guardians, I’d rather have Valkyrie even with the female connotation.
Yeah, it´s not blowing me out of my seat but the name isn´t THAT bad either.
I´m totally on the fence here.
Waiting till tomorrow´s gameplay presentation for deciding on how I feel about it.
I think the name really doesnt work because well, when its THAT specific, it makes no sense.
Person: “what are you again?”
DragonHunter: “I’m a dragon hunter.”
Person: “Oh, so all your spells and abilities are specifically made to hunt dragons?”
DH: “No, they effect other creatures and foes just as equally!”
Person: “Then why dragon hunter….?”
I’m hoping since this is still beta, the name can be changed (hopefully).
And if Warriors get “Dragon Slayer”, i’m changing my warriors name to Natsu Dragoneel
