You’ve already created Occam’s razor as an ascended dagger, nice (btw, french translators didn’t notice the refercence and made a mistake)
But I’m dreaming for a new home instance cat : The Schröedinger’s cat, of course in his box, and randomly dead or alive when you look at it XD
Maybe only for Asuras?

You shouldn’t be allowed to look in the box……. that breaks the whole premise of the experiment. If you want an observable outcome, I would say have a cat in possible 2 positions (next to each other), and every time you would look away it goes into super position, then collapses back when you look in that direction.

I’d guarantee 4 out of 5 players wouldn’t get the joke without looking it up.

IMHO, looking into the box doesn’t break the experiment, this is even it’s main purpose : Quotation from previous link, §Origin and motivation :
“The prevailing theory, called the Copenhagen interpretation, said that a quantum system remained in this superposition until it interacted with, or was observed by, the external world, at which time the superposition collapses into one or another of the possible definite states. "

So when observed, the cat dies or stays alive, but ofc he can no more be in both states.

And maybe 4 out of 5 will not understand, but I’ll do XD (selfish mode off)

Going to go out on a limb and predict ‘dead cat’ and ‘device to kill cat’ are the first two items on the list of things to never put in home instance.

An undead cat could be used as a work around since it has properties of both a living and dead cat.

A cat made from a box could reference the thought experiment without including a dead cat.

I guess it comes down to how important it is to help people feel smart, you know that 1 in 5.

It might also be interesting to have racial-specific pets. Like, if this cat was for asura, there could be a leaf cat outside the grove, and a cat for the other three races.

I love the idea of a Schrödinger’s Cat as one of the home instance cats, but I agree it would be a hard thing to portray and if it actually involved the cat being dead (even temporarily) it could be controversial.

I think making it an undead cat in a box could be the way to go. Because then it is both living and dead at the same time – which is what Schrödinger’s Cat is supposed to be, and in a way that works within GW2.

I’d guarantee 4 out of 5 players wouldn’t get the joke without looking it up.

Schrödinger’s Cat is pretty well known. I think most people know the basics of it being a thought experiment involving a cat in a box and there being no way to know if it’s dead or alive until you look.

What’s less well known is why this concept even came up or what it has to do with quantum physics. On more than one occasion when I told someone I studied behavioural biology they gave that as an example of what they thought I was studying. That and teaching dogs to ring bells when they want food.

To be honest I don’t fully understand it myself. But then I could never get my head around quantum physics. I’m a biologist, we deal with the real world, not hipster maths pretending to be relevant.

Hmm, I don’t think quantum physics is ‘hipster’ or pretending to be relevant at all (quantum physics is very relevant) Most people even partially clued up know why this thought experiment exists in explaining quantum mechanics.

This comment is irrelevant however, and I’d still like a Schrödinger’s cat in my home instance ^^

Just make it a box with the title “Empty or maybe not”. Make the ‘cat’ something like a theorem residing somewhere and you have to bring scribing papers or some of the various thesis that you can make.

If a dead cat could be controversial (PEGI12 related?), why not namimg the two states “asleep” and “awake”. We just need to replace the hydrocyanic acid by an extremely fast soporific XD

I really don’t agree with an undead cat, imho, it does simply not correspond to the experiment : in the experiment, both states exist simultaneously and independantly untill you observe. Then the two (or more) states collapse in one one of them, randomly.

Btw, we already have a daily dead bird in our home instance, so why not a dead Schröedinger’s cat?

Accurately representing the thought experiment would require a gas chamber for a cat. Are you really going to compare a gas chamber for a cat to a cat hunting and killing a bird?

Another way to represent Schroedinger’s cat:

A cat in a lab coat who is smart enough to run away from the person carrying a box.

I never asked for an accurate representation of the experiment, so a box named Schröedinger’s box, containing only the cat (without the flask of gaz and the hammer) would be perfect for me., and like this there is no gaz chamber representation.

I even proposed to theorically replace the gaz by a soporific if a dead cat is controversial.

And even if you want an accurate representation, wich is not my suggestion, it’s also possible to use the Einstein’s version of this experiment, replacing the hammer and the flask of gaz by a keg of unstable gunpowder.

Any representation of this cat without the Schröedinger’s box or outside of the box would be disappointing for me.

Edit : changed my mind : a box named Schröedinger’s experiment with a cat in lab coat next to it, maybe randomly dead or alive, would be ok for me

Normally games are undermining the laws of real life. I suggest putting a cat in home instance and call it Schröedinger which is carrying a box! I’m also OK with a box called Schröedinger’s experiment which doesn’t do anything.

Home instance should be removed and replaced by player’s house or just room in any city building. It’s just so huge and non-personal i don’t even bother going there.
Then we can add more cats.

I am glad I live in a world where team dead cat and team no dead cat can compromise with a cat wearing a lab coat. Goes to show that we should never underestimate the power of cute cats in clothes.

Have a cat named Professor Schröedinger that’s standing by a box. When you ask him what’s inside he says “An Asuran researcher.” Then he gives you the option to pay X silver to guess if the Asuran researcher is dead or alive. Once you pay, then nothing happens. You don’t find out because it’s a thought exercise and finding out ruins it.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

^ Or.. the professor could say there’s a cat in the box called Lazarus, and you have to guess if it’s really called Lazarus or it’s a cat called Balthazar pretending to be Lazarus.

It would also give me a chuckle if this would end up being just box you cannot even look into.

OK… it’s a box that gets destroyed if you interact with it, but then you get the title “Killed by Curiosity” lol
