Colin Johanson on how arenanet measures success.
(Please no gear treadmills, Colin!)
I’m a bit crazy, I like math, and I hate the Dredge fractal. I hate it enough that I wanted to see mathematically whether or not it would be faster to skip it every time it comes up. I crunched the numbers and came up with the following paper. Read it HERE.
This is one of the worst fractals, and I get it 9/10 runs, anet decided because it was so hateful they would make it worse.
Lol, nice write-up. Was this for a class assignment or purely for our enjoyment?
As much as I hate dredge, I prefer dredge to cliffside. My group seems to always fail the hands, no matter what strategy we use, then they don’t reset like the devs said they would.
I love the dredge one to be honest when people actually slow down and take the time to make things go dead. So many bags from them! I also enjoy the mechanics of the boss fight. But, this is my own opinion. However I tend to see the most issues when people try and cut corners and run through or past things.
Nice paper.
I don’t hate the dredge fractal anymore because it is so easy when we are able to swap to thief or/and mesmer and get it done fast.
I hate dredge, I hate dredge fractal, I hate paper.

I just did it for fun. I’m really glad some people liked it!
I hate dredge, I hate dredge fractal, I hate paper.
You sound like a dredge.
Really nice paper, although i enjoy the kitten out of dredge with a good party ^^
That math goes beyond what I’ve learned at school. Still, the outcome doesn’t really surprise me. Common sense always told me that skipping Dredge will only save time if you KNOW that your party is bad enough to wipe multiple times. And even then I wouldn’t see it as guaranteed that it would speed up things.
Also, lootbags.
That paper was amazing. I only wish we had more mathematicians at work on analyzing more aspects of the game or that more people would pay attention to the math that has already been done.
+1
months ago, my guild farmed the dredge fractal for a few hours (we would leave and remake after killing the ones in the tank). made about 5g/hour each just in bags. level 10 vs. 20 gave about the same – 20 gave more bags but took longer.
dredge is neutral to me. long, sometimes noobs will make it fail but don’t have to restart from that far back, but high rewards.
cliffside is my dreaded one. easy to fail especially with noobs, failure results in a huge restart, very few rewards.
lol @ these
“Yes, I’m not ashamed to say that you Dredge lovers are nuts. You’re bad and you should feel bad.”
“Plus, I can always trick people with poor math skills into skipping if I want to by scaring them with numbers and forumlas.”
ahahaha
