Drop System
Im not sure but the word luck should be more clearly defined…
Sing a mantra to the RNG Gods every morning and it might work.
I used to do all dungeons per day in the past, 5k ap, almost 200% magic find. A friend of mine bought GW2 and dropped a pre as soon as he hit 80. So, yea.
RNG is RNG. Random is never fair.
my only assumption is he wants everyone who has a low amount of luck to be bared from getting any good loot. my question would then be why have a loot system if the hardcore farmers are the only ones benefiting. In the end pray to RNGesus
Im not saying anything of the sort, I just want some thing nice
Yes but that same RnG that stops hardcore farmers from getting the ultra high end loot is what also in the long run drives them out of the game, infact its so clear it does this espically around Pre’s that Anet finally took steps that allow you to create the Pre’s for your Legendary.
The Loot/RNG system is totally broken in this game, ive seen players that haven’t logged in for 6+ months log in play the forge a dozen times and pul out a pre, yet people who play everyday get nothing from it.
If they don’t do a major overhaul of the loot system for the expansion, it will start to drive people away, as the sad truth is, there is nothing to do in this game, there is no endgame, there is only farming, and when farming never drops loot you get bored and move on to a new game.
OK so Im wondering about gw2s dropping system, Ive more than 11K AP, I started playing more than 2 years ago. Now I got my friend to play and he got the drop Lord Taeres’s Shadow (worth 70g on the tp) before he even reached lv 50 with less than 700AP and Ive not gotten a drop worth more than 20-30g on any of my 11 lv 80s, so please, can someone tell me how is this luck system supposed to work?
Based on luck perhaps – which by definition is not fair?
“Mentoring engineers / mesmers and showing you what you can do with your fantastic class!
Just pm me for my advice! Always eager to help!”
Random is fair on the wider scale, the fact I’v had a guild member receive 3 precursors before 1.5k AP and I only got one at 15k AP is part of it I guess…
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

If you want something nice, farm gold and buy something nice.
RNG means Random Number Generator. It’s random. I’m not sure how much more detailed I can get.
One of my guildies got Dawn as a drop in CS. Then he got Dusk, and on top of all that he also got The Colossus, all as drops. He has 4,900 AP and I have 10,546. I have 10 level 80’s and have been playing since before launch. He’s only been playing since about 4 months ago and has 2 level 80’s. AP has nothing to do with RNG. Nor does time played. Nor do level 80’s. It is “luck” based on a number generator that generates these numbers randomly.
So long Treeface.
“…Kormir? I know not of whom you speak.”
I to have been playing since the game has released, and I have never got anything worth more than 2 gold, and it is very rare for me to get any drop worth more than 15 silver. I have 40 gold to my name. On the other hand my brother hasn’t played nearly as long, for about 8 months now, and he has 700 gold, he on a nearly consistent basis gets drops worth more than 1 gold, got several drops worth more then 50 gold, even got 2 drops worth more than 150 gold. The RNG gods always loved my brother, and they always hated me in all the MMOs i have played.
To be honest as it stands now a fresh new account will have the same lucks, odds and droprates as a hardcore veteran account with 25k AP and over a dozen lvl 80s. The whole “Magic Find” stuff is pretty kitten worthless. It only influences direct drops from killed monsters. Loot from boxes aren’t influenced by MF, loot from reward chests aren’t influenced by magic find and loot from boss chests aren’t influenced by MF and the Mystic Forge isn’t influenced by MF either.
Since the odds of precursors dropping are the highest in boss chests and rewards chests (even with your MF at 300%) it means that when it comes to precursor drops, we’re all equals and every account has an equal chance to drop a precursor, regardless of your account’s MF.
I think Anet should rework the Magic Find system and make it so that your MF percentage also influences boss chests, rewards chests and the Mystic Forge.

btw I have farmed for gold to get items that I wanted, refering to my several T3 sets, I was merely trying to emphasize that Ive 1. played through alot of hours 2. 11 lv 80’s: that Ive accually done something in the time that I played plus the +11K AP, all coming together, the reason why I have a problem here is that my chances of getting atleast 1 item above 20-30g in this period of time should be much more than what my friend’s chances were/was.
The only way to “improve” your drops is to increase your kills per hour rate.
The guy who buys 1,000 lotto tickets has a better chance of winning than the guy who buys 1 lotto ticket.
Likewise, the player who kills 1,000 enemies has more chances of getting good loot than the player who only kills 1 enemy.
the reason why I have a problem here is that my chances of getting atleast 1 item above 20-30g in this period of time should be much more than what my friend’s chances were/was.
They are exactly the same. They still are exactly the same, and they still will be exactly the same unless the devs change the system. This is the nature of RNG.
So long Treeface.

MF is given as a percentage, but what does 200% actually mean and does it actually matter? The entire MF mechanic needs to be completely scrapped and replaced with a system proposed here:

It is a multiplier that applies to the chance to receive loot of an increased tier.
If you are looting a monster and it was going to be a rare item and you had a 0.5% chance for the rare item to be an exotic, then 200% Magic Find would change that to be a 1.0% chance of the rare item being exotic.
If you are looting a monster and it was going to be a rare item and you had a 0.5% chance for the rare item to be an exotic, then 200% Magic Find would change that to be a 1.0% chance of the rare item being exotic.
It would actually be a 1.5% chance. A 100% increase would be a 1.0% chance.

Yes, I know it is a multiplier. I just think the drop probabilities are so low to begin with that a 200% multiplier has a negligible effect on getting a decent drop (0.0001 probability as opposed to 0.0003?) Honestly, I think we are kidding ourselves with this MF nonsense. This is why I refuse to use MF of any kind and instead devote my food and utility buffs to tactical.

I forget, do they start a new character off with 100% or 0% on the stat page?
If you have 200% Magic Find, then your chance would be 1.0%. If you had a 200% INCREASE to your base Magic Find (so actual Magic Find stat of 300%), then it would be 1.5%.

New accounts don’t start at 100%. It’s been about a year since I bought my second account, but I remember that much. I’m not sure if it’s 0, either, though.
I don’t really know how to math, but what would a 100% increase of a 0.5% chance be, then?
As for random: My first few weeks playing my second account, I got two named exotics from champ boxes, one of which was on a character below level 30.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
Magic find has nothing to do with your chances of getting something like a precursor. Your percent chance of getting one is so small that have 500% magic find means nothing. All it means is you have a better chance at getting some more rares and maybe an exotic something, but thats about it.
its all random and nothing you do short of killing all the things and praying will change that. They already admitted that some people have great luck and some have horrible luck and that it wasn’t going to change. Operating as intended.
But hey, buy the xpac and you can quest for the pre you want. but only if you buy it.

Actually not quite true.
Its a kind of a fake random. For it be “random” there will be those that are somewhere in the middle, but there will also be others that fall on either the super lucky end or the horribly unlucky end, and there is no way for it to shift. (This all came up in the thread specifically about RNG.)
So, no, not really fair.

Fair does not mean getting the same result as everyone else, it means having the same opportunity as everyone else.
When fair is defined correctly, you see that random is fair. It is also sometimes quite unpleasant.

So you’re defining fair as parity in outcome not in opportunity. I think since everyone gets the same RNG chance it’s equal, so I’m more focused on opportunity.
When my gw2 account was new, I was getting Exotic drops like Arc and X6-31 Beta. Now that I have around 240% mf I don’t get any more exotics. :^/

In terms of a game where more or less you want customers/players to have fun……the outcome is rather important. It is not good for players to have highly varied experiences as it really only serves to have higher numbers of players displeased with your product/game than if their experience were more even keeled.
gw2: outputs are more of a function of rng
other games: outputs are more of a function of inputs
This is a concept that many other games acknowledge and have measures in place to assure. Unfortunately GW2 seems to have missed the memo in this regard.
I don’t really have a lot to say about “fair vs unfair,” or “outcome vs opporunity,” but I… I guess I just wanted to vent out my own little anecdote:
I have two friends. All three of us have been playing since launch day. Between the two of them they have received a total of eleven precursor drops. Eleven.
Meanwhile I, playing the same amount of time, doing the same content— often even doing that content with them, have received not a single one.
Now to be fair, and to round out the story, I spent about three moths grinding gold (through various means) until I had 2.1k gold in my pocket. Doing a quick browse through gw2spidy, one sees that that is easily enough gold in hand to buy any precursor I wanted— hell, I could have bought several, including two dusks. There were even a handful of legendaries I could have purchased directly. (For those of you who are curious, I made a conscious choice not to buy any precursors. Spent the money on stuff I valued more).
So I guess the question becomes: “Why should a few lucky players be allowed to accumulate as much wealth in a single evening as (an unmeasured population of) unlucky players spend weeks working to get?”
And that’s not hyperbole; one of my friends literally got three precursor drops over the course of a five dungeon run (one of them being dusk).
I for one think it’s disappointing (note: disappointing, not unfair) that our Virtual Fantasy World economy has to mirror our real world one, in which the best way to acquire wealth is to be born into it.
(Just for clarity, the above is a metaphorical comparison of the luck of a 100% unbiased RNG drop rate system to the “luck” of being born the child of a business mogul or AAA celebrity or what have you.)
Edited to add: And yeah, it’s cool we’ll be able to obtain a precursor with some degree of certainty now, but I’m still a bit bothered that some players get to be wealthy for no reason (those who are consistently rewarded with high end drops), while others have to be poor (or perhaps “lower middle class” is a better comparison) for no reason.
I’d sort of really like the magic find system to be reworked (again) somehow: find some way to make it actually relevant in more parts of the game, while of course keeping in mind that it’s important not to create an unbreachable disparity between New and Veteran players.

….. I just want some thing nice
…..don’t we all?
RNG is a lot like life….neither is fair….
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
I feel your pain. I have watched a friend over and over again be handed for free the things I have paid for (multiple precursors and permanent hairstylist contract). I’ve gotten Rage twice in a row from the forge… Not much once you realize I have bought 9 expensive precurors. I did loot Xanthium of Dreams several months back, which helped me finish a few collections after it funded the crafting and sale of a two legendaries.
And now, the only thing I currently want in game is Tequatl’s hoard. I have not missed a daily kill in about 4 months, and often kill him 2-3 times per day on different characters. Same friend I mentioned above got the drop though!
I see no reason why dedicated players should not have a way to obtain the things they want. I have no problem with people randomly getting good drops. I do have a problem with things that are ONLY RNG drops, such as Teq’s Hoard and fractal weapon skins. I see no reason why teq and fractals can’t give one token per run, and allow you to trade something like 200 tokens for a skin. At least there would be some light at the end of the tunnel. I think it is reasonable to reward players who are dedicated one weapon skin every 3-4 months.
Im not saying anything of the sort, I just want some thing nice
Based on the amount you’ve played, you should be able to buy anything nice you’re after … and even better, it won’t be RNG.
Anet discusses that system in the thread linked above, and it seems that most players are in agreement that it should be put in place. As others have said time and time again, why some games think that their reward systems should mimic real life in which the lucky few get rich, some others get rich through grind, and the masses are left to their own means I do not know.
This is a game, players are supposed to have fun, and should get rewarded by doing the things that they enjoy. I think that a game with players who enjoy the experience more would also see more money put into the game by said players.
I don’t get your point … the OP is complaining he’s never getting good drops, not that he doesn’t enjoy the game or he’s not rewarded for playing it.
I forget, do they start a new character off with 100% or 0% on the stat page?
If you have 200% Magic Find, then your chance would be 1.0%. If you had a 200% INCREASE to your base Magic Find (so actual Magic Find stat of 300%), then it would be 1.5%.
Your magic find on a new character is 0%. That is to say you receive no increased bonus when it rolls on the magic find table. So to use your numbers if the base chance for a rare item is .5% then the following would be true:
MF 50% = .75%
MF 100% = 1.0%
MF 150% = 1.25%
MF 200% = 1.5%
So on and so forth.
Remember everyone has access to the base magic find percent chance (whatever that is) and the magic find value is your bonus to that base chance.
I don’t get your point … the OP is complaining he’s never getting good drops, not that he doesn’t enjoy the game or he’s not rewarded for playing it.
My point is that there are players who get enjoyment from the rewards, and some players almost never see said rewards. Grinding gold to buy items cheapens them, using real cash to get items via gems-to-gold cheapens them, and never seeing drops after thousands of hours of play time sucks the fun out. As said above, Anet themselves asked what players think of a system where if your account is an outlier and you simply don’t get much if anything in the way of drops that at least you know via tokens at some point you will be rewarded.
Threads like this, and more often threads unhappy about the situation with drops in the game are the norm. I’ve yet to see threads speaking to how players, their friends, and the majority of those around them are excited about the way they’ve been rewarded for doing actual content. The majority of replies in regards to the new Legendary quest system have been thankful or “it’s about time” in nature. The outliers in this regard seem to be people who think the status quo should be accepted. I personally don’t find the current system something that is enjoyable.
