Since drops are random I would expect to see a drop that conforms to my build on occasion. However, I and beginning to wonder if there is some additional logic in the game that prevents this.

For the past 6 weeks I have stuck to one level 80 character. I have not received a single drop that matched a popular “cookie cutter build”. Almost every yellow I have received contained magic find as a stat or was a weapon or piece of armor the toon could not use. I bought 10 boxes of armor from the Laurel vendor and not one usable piece in the sense of being ideal for a very common build.

Magic find builds: Tried one at 56% and ran with my son for a week. My magic find build actually got less drops and fewer good drops then my son who ran a typical power build of the same class and level.

Since game release I have not received a single orange drop.

I did receive one yellow drop that matched another toon build that I really don’t care to play.

I either have just bad luck or the loot tables are biased in some sense.

I personally would rather have better drops I can use but not sell then drops that are only good for selling on the AH for a few silver

End of todays whining

At level 80 you shouldn’t be living off of drops. Even before level 80, buying the gear that matches your build is not expensive.
Plus, you have the option to craft, or run some dungeons for tokens for cheap exotics.
With the laurels and money you spent gambling to have a chance to get the gear you want, you could have had a fully exotic geared char.
(Also, salvage, sell rares you don’t need – the ecto you get sells well or can be used for crafting)

Yeah, I don’t get the whole I’m waiting for the right thing to drop for me thing. By the time you’re level 80 and in end zones, you should have at least enough money to start outfitting yourself.

If you don’t like crafting or running dungeons you can buy stuff on the auction house, as said above.

Waiting for stuff to drop is not really all that efficient.

If open world loot drops were the only way to gear a character I would say you have a point (except for the “additional logic” part), but they aren’t. As mentioned above, level 80 exotic gear can be obtained via crafting, dungeon tokens, karma, and WvWvW badges. These methods reward working towards a goal, not depending on RNG based loot drops. For example, if I want a piece of level 80 exotics PVT (power/vitality/toughness) armor I can run 4 or 5 paths of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon. Dungeon runs can take from 5 minutes (speed running) to maybe 1.5 hours for a PUG. So I can get my level 80 exotic PVT heavy armor boots in somewhere between 20 minutes and 6 hours. Those boots are also available for 42K karma from the Arah and Grenth temple karma vendors. You don’t even need to participate in the temple clear, just show up when it’s done. Having RNG based loot drops that gave me those exact boots in the same amount of time would be absurd.

Sell those drops and buy the ones you want? What’s the problem?

Dungeons, mega-boss events, and some farming in one week I had a full set of exotic armor and weapons for my build, and I play casually.

well I either poorly stated my whine or you all missed the point.

The point is not outfitting a toon with all exotics. I know I can buy or craft about any armor/weapon I want. It is not about getting something as fast or easy as possible, or making more gold on the AH.

The point is, it would be nice to get drops that are the right level and stats on occasion that your toon could use while just out exploring, questing or helping others. A cool reward every now and then just for playing the game in an ordinary way and being able to say WOW! look what I got and actually get excited about it. I know, some people have experienced this.

To even go further:

Wouldn’t it be nice while leveling a toon to actually get drops on occasion that were above your current level. A weapon or piece of armor to stick in your inventory and grow into. Image not being able to buy or craft any weapon or armor, only buffs, boons and stat modifiers. Image playing a toon where the strategy of your build changes dependent on what drops your toon finds, when it is able to grow into them and how much ability it has to modify. In other words the toon must be self sufficient.

So much for heresy

I couldn’t agree more. I’d rather have character which ALWAYS get the items which can be used by this character. So no more perfect heavy armor for thief, or dagger for guardian. And getting a gear above your current level? Why not. Of course limited to few levels above your current level to avoid getting exotics to 1 lvl characters.

There actually is something like this in some games. But it is bound to dungeons only. You do the dungeon and a chest drops and you open it to receive a piece of special gear specifically for your class.

But the others are right, you do make plenty leveling up to get decent gear. Once you get 80 you make even more and can buy/make your own gear. The gear you sell that doesn’t fit/work for you, is going to help someone else. The more players who sell the gear the cheaper they become, or they reach a nice steady price.

You do get 1 guaranteed rare now from events per account per day. As well as the regular chest which runs on RNG. If you have BL salvage or Master salvage kits you can use them. There is a decent chance you will get at least 1 ecto or more from a rare (not guaranteed but good chance/better with BL). That right there is 28s’ish. If you take a look at armor on TP it is generally 24s+, weapons are 28s+. So not a bad deal, especially if you get 3 ectos and mats.

If all of your drops were ones you could use, you wouldn’t be selling or salvaging anywhere near as much gear.
I do agree that it can be frustrating to never receive equipment relevant to your profession, but unfortunately that’s the nature of the random number generator.
It is however possible to “Weight” the RNG so that it spits out stuff your profession can use more regularly than the other stuff.
However, I can’t honestly say whether ArenaNet have implemented such a weighting system or not.
