Dualshock gamepad
I was thinking of trying this given the limited number of skills.
Would you mind sharing how you mapped the keys (x button = action 1 or whatever)
Can you tell me how to set it up and try this? The whole 9 yards of the process for perfection
Zora
Nvm reading up on it I take back what I said it is no where near the effectiveness of mouse keyboard strafe power fast turning etc of m/kb

It was surprisingly easy.
First you have to do a search for the driver. Windows will install one, (and let it do so). You’ll need to go back and find and install a driver called dualshock3.inf.
It’s easy to find. Then simply find and download Xpadder. It lets you setup keyboard and mouse functions to the gamepad.
Now, when I was looking into doing this, I read that a program called MotioninJoy was needed for the gamepad to communicate with your PC. I couldn’t get it to work, but just having the driver and Xpadder works for me.
Here is a video I watched that got me started.

So wrong. With Xpadder I can speed up mouse look. You can adjust the responsiveness of everything. And setting left and right to strafe works amazing.
But use what you are comfortable with.
I use xpadder as does my wife and father who also play with me. There’s no going back once you try it. Moving while using skills is so important in this game and the controller is so much fun!
In all my years of mmorpg playing I never thought a gamepad would be practical for the genre.
I hooked up my PS3 dualshock gamepad to my pc, and it’s amazing. I would swear it’s like the game was made for it.
Worked great with every class. The actiony combat just works so well with it. I’m untouchable now.
I was a “purist”, but now I encourage others to give it a try.
As a matter of fact, I need you too. sPVP and WvW isn’t a challenge for me anymore. My reaction times are just too fast to feel challenged.
lol
And then someone comes a long that is not challenged by a M/K setup (like most aren’t) and steamrolls over you and your gamepad. It is nice for you that you can finaly handle pvp but you are still at the short end of the stick.

Its not optimal for PvP, but it is for PvE where you auto turn toward enemies anyway. Short of having a mouse with 10+ buttons on it this is the best way to play!

You’ll have to find what works best for you by experimenting.
I have different profiles for different characters. For instance, my elementalist requires me to set a button to toggle the right joystick to switch from mouselook to mouse cursor. For the aoe abilites.
But for my thief, its more simple.
Left joystick is= up, down, strafe right and left.
Right joystick= mouselook. Once you use Xpadder, its easy to see how to set this up.
Dpad= Now, I use this for my 7-0 abilities. Some use if for map, charcter etc.
X, square, triangle and O= I have set up jump, attack 1, attack 2, attack 3. In that order.
R1 and R2 Trigger= I use for attack 4 and attack 5.
Start= heal
Select=Switch weapons
L1 and L2= is F1 ability and Target closest enemy.
L3= dodge
R3= F. (interact)
Now, some use a trigger button to toggle the X, square, triangle and O buttons to use the 7-0 abilities. I don’t.
you will need to use a button to toggle for mouselook on the right joystick so you can move the cursor for classes that need to target attacks that way.
hope that helps a bit.

I would agree in any other mmorpg. I always laughed when someone said they were using a gamepad for the game. lol.
But with the limited skills, and action combat. It just makes sense. And those with the know-how can set it up to be ultra responsive.
I get what you are saying. It’s just simply not true for GW2.

In that case i would just loove to see this on youtube and see how well you do with that in sPvP,that would really convince people, more so then some thread.
Everything you need is in the document. For those curious, mouse turning is implemented, it’s not key turning.
Also, this is for a 360 controller, but can be used with a PS2 or PS3 controller with the MotioninJoy drivers.

I’m not flexing my kitten. Let someone else do that. I just found something that really made a difference for me. Thought I would share. Let curious minds try it out and see for themselves.
K/M are a must for mmorpg gameplay. Anything else is sub optimal. Until GW2. It’s not a slam against GW2.

uhm yeah thats great tomcat but kindstrikes thread is about a ps3 gamepad, he supplied all there is needed to know for that specific pad already.
Camera movement as well as ground-targeted abilities have kept me from trying controller.

Motioninjoy drivers make the PS3 controller emulate a 360 controller. I’m actually using a PS3 controller with my setup.
Camera movement as well as ground-targeted abilities have kept me from trying controller.
These are both implemented in my configuration. I’ll admit, ground targeting is not as simple as I’d like with the controller, but it’s doable. Camera movement is working fine though.

Yeah, took me a bit to figure that one out. But setting a trigger button to change the function of one of your joysticks from mouselook to cursor fixed that for me.

I wanted everyone to know the difference it made in my reaction times. I was hoping it would do the same for others. My comment was made to encourage, not inflame.

So you can’t turn the camera and target the ground at the same time? I’m trying to imagine how awful this would be for a grenade oriented engineer…

Warrior or guardian would basically be the only somewhat viable ,playable choices in pvp. But dont expect to be leader of the pack at any time.
No matter what you do or how magical you setup a gamepad m/k will always be faster and more precise. Maybe if your bad at pvp (not a insult some ppl just are) it can make that particular part of the game more do able for you but that would be about it.
It does not make you rise above all and remove the challenge of fighting other people which is a bold bold claim even for someone who plays with m/k.

Haven’t tried it with an engineer. I think you are right. It would be difficult.
Not impossible, but more trouble than its worth.
You would have to juggle the toggle to switch between mouselook and cursor. Can be done, but would it be worth it? lol. Maybe to some.

That rules out most classes/weps/builds then.

Agreed, even with my own setup it sucks for grenade engineer. I’ve found it best for Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, Dagger Elementalist, and Thief. For Thief particularly the bow skills groudn targeting don’t seem to be an issue, probably because the fields are so big, they’re easier to aim.
The issue with Engineer I’ve found isn’t the ground targeting itself, but rather the way you need to quickly lead your targets, due to the delay in selecting the target and the animation for throwing the grenades, it takes about a second or two for the ’nades to land and explode, so you need some really, really fast lead targeting.

Worked great with every class.

I love the concept of using a gamepad for action-oriented games where cursor aiming is not important, but the control you get with a mouse I feel surpasses the (admittedly amazing) button functionality of a gamepad.

There are benefits. For me specifically, it’s because I don’t have an ergonomic desktop setup and I suffer from RSI related issues over long gaming sessions. I don’t have this issue with the controller. Personal comfort is more important to me than 100% optimal play.
However, with melee classes and setups without ground targeting, I find my reaction times are actually better with the controller than with KB+M. Since I tend toward “tank” and melee classes, this is good for me, YMMV.
