Dueling in gw2! Remember?
~Sincerely, Scissors
I see duels as a sparring mode. You can test and train new combos, check out some damagenumbers on targets in full and realistic armor, including crits and conditions unlike those targetdummies.
The second use is for pure fun. How would it hurt anyone in this thread if I had a chance to duel my brother? Duels have never ruined anything in any game. There is nothing you can win or lose in a duel and nothing forces you to participate.
It’s really embarassing to see so many people actively fighting a feature- a toy- that by any means could never harm them. This is already like a religious thing. “We don’t want gays, because reasons! Deal with it!”there is no good reason to put it in the open world, if you want duels then it should stay in a duel arena, not somewhere where whiny kids can spam and troll the heck out of players.
really, ppl whine that they don’t want things like any other MMO but the moment ppl talk about duels, the one thing that ruins any PvE experience, it’s all yay saying.
i say, IF duels are in the game, let’s go all the way and add mounts while we’re at it.
you want one thing, accept the other, not “one thing but not the other”.What a fine logic. First of all, if you don’t want to meet trolls better quit the internet. And then why stop there? Let’s drop dungeons, gear, stats and WvW. Omg almost every MMO has professions and skills, even hostile NPCs! that’s way to mainstream!! Your “point” boils down to “either copy every single detail or open a new genre”.
That kind of reasoning really fits a whiny kid who spams and trolls people.
spoken like a true PvP-er, not only are you trying to justify this you even say i have no reason to deny it.
your “reasons” boils down to “i want duels” even if it causes more harm then it’s doing good.
so yeah, go ahead and write a whole list of “reasons” why duels should be in an open PvE world, make a list of “reasons” that tries to justify why you want it in the game.
i already know the harm it does and i don’t even have to write down the reasons, you can see it in every single MMO that allows duels.
but ill wait and see, i already have a list of reasons why it’s a bad idea and why it doesn’t work in GW2.
I would be in favor of adding in a dueling option as long as it is done in a manner that would minimize the options for the feature to be abused.
- Auto-decline toggle with Allow duel requests off as the default; if you want to duel, turn it on
- No dueling near merchants, banks, trading post, crafting stations or role-play sites
The second one might be tough to program, as merchants, TP NPC’s and crafting stations occur in the persistent world as well as in outposts. A compromise on that one might mean dueling only allowed in specific arenas in cities, but allowed anywhere in the persistent world.
Why? Because any game feature that can be abused, will be abused. I doubt that the abuse would be the pandemic that others seem to fear, but it would happen. Opinion on a dueling feature is polarized. If it’s to be implemented at all, it will likely be implemented as a compromise. Accepting some limitations in case someone decides to abuse the feature is a compromise.
Unbelievable really. The amount of people resorting to the most unrealistic and far fetched reasons to not have duels astounds me.
I think my reasons are actually quite logical.
Assumptions cannot possibly be concrete evidence, no matter how “logical” they seem to you.

Down with the braindead faceroll classes.
check out the duel mega-thread if you wanna see Sorudo and Windu get shut down repeatedly. Every argument they’ve presented has been thoroughly refuted.
The reason we aren’t likely to see duels any time soon, is because each patch implements content that supports the Gem store. New skins/items based around the story that people can drop $10 bucks on easily and don’t cost a lot of time or resources to create. I don’t necessarily agree with it but honestly that’s how it goes, it’s marketing decisions based on whats going to generate the best, immediate revenue for the least amount of opportunity cost and resources.
If duels are implemented the way they have been in other games, there is no reason to buy anything from the cash shop. They could add things to support duels, (like special skins or whatever) but the amount of resources and assets that would have to be directed to create dueling likely does not cover the potential cash shop revenue that could be made much easier with a living story patch.
Personally, i think it is a good idea in the long run. All the hardcore MMOers that have moved on from GW2 would be more likely to return to mess around with dueling, but then are likely to see all the new, quality stuff added to the game and may become staying players.
Give me an option to decline all duel requests (and autoblock repeat spammers) and the duelheads can do whatever they please.
How do you even live your everyday life with all these delusions inside your head? Just what evidence do you have to justify any of this?
Smh. Dem casual pve warriors.
Thank you for providing yet another argument against allowing Dueling.
If the people that want dueling are behaving like this when someone disagree with them, I definitely wouldn’t want to see how they would react in-game when they got defeated or something like that.

I don’t play any sort of PvP in GW2. I tried WvW for a while but only made it to like level 5. “not only are you trying to justify this” odd, how me trying to justify my point already offends you. Well at least I had a point in the first place unlike yourself.
I never said “even if it causes more harm…” I said it is definetly going to cause no harm. Twisting my point isn’t going to help.
so yeah, go ahead and write a whole list of “reasons” why duels should be in an open PvE world, make a list of “reasons” that tries to justify why you want it in the game.
I already gave a few reasons. There is no need to repeat them or anything someone else has already mentioned, just because you choose to ignore them. It’s your turn and you waste it like that?
i already know the harm it does and i don’t even have to write down the reasons, you can see it in every single MMO that allows duels.

I have exclusively played MMOs with a duel option. Never have I experienced any trouble with it, nor do I know anyone with such experience. What’s there to see? Apparently, you are concerned about it’s abusive potential. However, where is the proof that this is a real thing? If I didn’t get trolled, why should a significant amount of people manage to do so? Furthermore, there is no real potential left if they introduce duels with another standard feature: duel invitation block (already brought up several times and sucessfully ignored by you – it seems).
@scramblers
I am afraid you’re right in general. However, I am not yet convinced that Anet is a company in the first place and only incidentially a game developer… not yet.

There is a very good reason as to why there is no dueling in the game.
The game is balanced around 5v5 not 1v1.
Dueling would lead to massive amounts of threads with people whining about how X is much better than Y and how it is impossible to defeat A with B and so on.
You mean the crap they already do? Seriously go look around the forums it’s already riddled with x>y and a always beats b.
Duels aren’t about competitive PvP, we have sPvP for that. Duels are like the costume brawl; fun between friends while waiting in PvE.
And we all wait in PvE.. wait for Teq to show up.. wait for a friend to reach us in a JP, wait for someone to login for our dungeon run, etc etc.
I’m no PvP mongul, but even I dueled in other games for kittens and giggles.
If you don’t want to duel, then don’t duel. Stop trying to take it away from people who may want it.
If you don’t want to duel, then don’t duel. Stop trying to take it away from people who may want it.
Last time I checked this wasn’t a thread started by Anet saying, “Vote for or against open world duels.” There isn’t anything to take away since it doesn’t exist to start with. All these threads on the topic have been beat to death and then beaten dead again. If you think that whoever thinks they win the argument in this thread will prevail, well, I think that isn’t going to happen. There isn’t anything said in this thread that hasn’t been said over and over already so I really don’t think it makes a difference. In the end, this thread will fade away soon like the many others and only Anet knows what the future holds as far a such things.
That said,
No thank you.

Broadly speaking, I think duels and duelers fall into one of two categories: “competitive” and “just-for-fun”. The “competitive” dueler has worked out a dueling build, wears his dueling gear, and seeks competitive matches against skilled opponents. Dueling is what he logged on for. Custom Arenas as implemented aren’t great at all for this purpose, but I think instanced dueling or dueling arenas could work fine for the competitive dueler in theory (unless I’m missing something).
But all my dueling in the past has been of the “just-for-fun” variety. And for this, convenience is paramount. I’m not here to duel, I’m here for some other purpose, perhaps leveling up. But how about a change of pace… want to duel, person I know or don’t? Sure! Ha ha, you got me. Back to the game. Want to duel while we wait for everyone to arrive? Sure, let’s kill some time! Later that day, I’m at a guild party on Southsun Beach. Everyone look and clear channel! SlayerDude is fighting WolfLady! Ah ha ha! Don’t we have wacky and fun times you guys!? It’s a huge “flavor” feature. Hide dueling away in an instance or arena and this never happens.
If you don’t want to duel, then don’t duel. Stop trying to take it away from people who may want it.
I could care less about dueling as long as I have the option to turn off any and all requests from people who want to duel me….if they add it, they better make it a toggle (allow duel, on / off). I also really worry about all the crap that will come into play regarding balance if the introduce it.
I still don’t see the point of it though…you can costume brawl, you can go to PvP, you can launch fireballs and etc at each other (for no damage) to your hearts content…so what’s the point?

No one complains that Costume Brawls are ruining the game, like they say duels would (as far as I know). I think we all tacitly understand that one is not a replacement for the other. The option of going to PvP is not a great one at current for this purpose, but it’s something. However, you miss out on a lot, as I described above.
Want to meet up in Queensdale and throw fireballs at each other?

Exactly.
Duels are like the costume brawl; fun between friends while waiting in PvE.
In other words, duelling already exists in the form of costume brawls. Case closed.
Up next, another repeat thread on mounts…
You mean the crap they already do? Seriously go look around the forums it’s already riddled with x>y and a always beats b.
Exactly. Except that if they added 1v1 mode it would most likely increase massively, simply due to the fact that the game now “supports a 1v1 mode and thus should be balanced around it”.

So very many people have argued that players can already participate in 1 v 1 through private queues, WvW, etc, and yet what you describe has not occurred to the degree you claim.
I am not saying that there won’t be complaints, but the possibility that someone might complain about something in a new bit of content/game mode/whatever seems like a questionable reason for not implementing it. By that logic we should not have any new development.
Please don’t allow dueling in PVE. It’s what chased me away from playing SWTOR. Really annoying having people try to duel with you all the time and then annoying you about it when you won’t.
i hope not the pvp sucks for any1 not in heavy armor
ANet doesn’t really seem all that interested in any player activity that involves fewer than five players.
The game is balanced around 5v5 not 1v1.
Fundamental flaw with the game right there, has been since mmo’s began.
If you don’t balance the foundation, then the top is NEVER balanced. Every tournament they have had has only proven this as certain professions are inevitably left out in the cold.
The rotation of buffs and nerfs never fixes the bottom line and that’s, that there is no balance and never will be. The cycle simply gives the illusion of change, and the rotation is simply perpetual for what profession is highest and lowest at any given time.
Duels are like the costume brawl; fun between friends while waiting in PvE.

Thus proving that dueling won’t cause problems, because it’s already in the game and there are no problems. Anyone can play this game, so let’s just move past it. Everyone knows costume brawls are not a substitute for dueling. It’s implicit even in the arguments of people who don’t want to add duels. Dueling is to costume brawl as basketball is to hop-scotch. If I want to do one, the other is not fit for purpose.
I believe this question have been asked hundred of times, but Im wondering – why no duel? Why cant I see and challenge my friend for a friendly duel
Why no implementing that?
PS – why no inspect option?
There is a discussion about dueling in GW2 on the front page of this forum right now:https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Dueling-in-gw2-Remember/page/2#post3733915

If two friends are sitting somewhere waiting for an event to start, using a system that requires them to leave the zone in order to kill time with a duel is counter productive.

I’ve played many MMOs as well, and while there is a generally understood meeting place for dueling, players still have the freedom to take advantage of the entire map and duel where they please (with few exceptions, like banks, ah, etc.).
Otherwise, custom arenas make you use your watered-down sPvP avatar and is not nearly as accessible as open world duels. Colin Johanson even admitted it was a awkward way to have to duel.
Obsidian Sanctum is another terrible suggestion, unless all your friends happen to be on the opposing WvW servers.
Look at the Zhaitan fight at the end of the personal story. Anet has admitted it was rushed and would like to spend more time on it, but we’ve seen no indication that it will ever happen. Duels are in that same vein, a feature they would have like to have included but was unable to make it into the launch version. Unfortunately, due to the business side of things the LS is the priorty (see my earlier post for more details).

I’m talking about custom arena in general. You can always make one “just-for-fun”. Nothing is stopping you. For instance, I made one 3 months ago, and It worked just fine. Test it.
Does the custom arena take one out of the zone ?
I have played so many mmo, and there has been always a “hub” where duelers met. Gw2 hub happens to be:
1. Custom Arena in spvp.
2. Obsidian Sanctum in wvw
It’s enough to not consider it a priority. If you dislike changing zones that much, than I’m afraid it’s not ArenaNet problem.Never claimed it was a priority.
Anet has stated that they want to incorporate open world dueling.
Anet has described the options you mention in negative terms. If two friends are sitting somewhere waiting for an event to start, using a system that requires them to leave the zone in order to kill time with a duel is counter productive.
So,
Does the custom arena take one out of the zone ?
I offered you an alternative, if you don’t like it, it’s not ArenaNet problem. Your rhetorical question won’t speed things up.
I didn’t ask for an alternative.
I also did not ask a rhetorical question.
I did point out that Anet describes your alternative in a negative light.
You are in the wrong thread. If you want to have a discussion, at least have the decency to stay on topic. Again, for the 1021382112 w/e times, you can duel in guild wars 2 via custom arena or obsidian sanctum against other servers.
I’m talking about custom arena in general. You can always make one “just-for-fun”. Nothing is stopping you. For instance, I made one 3 months ago, and It worked just fine. Test it.
I know I can do this. But as I tried to convey, there are advantages to doing it in the open world compared to Custom Arenas. Open world > custom arenas for the purposes of just-for-fun duels. Open world would transform dueling from a feature I’ve used exactly once to a feature I use all time. Additionally, PvP is not designed for duels. There are complications if you try to use PvP maps for this purpose. If we’re going for instanced dueling, that is something that needs more support (not that I care, I won’t use it).

I am discussing dueling, and commenting on options for same presented by others, in a thread about dueling.
You are quoting me, asking you a question about your post, and claiming that it is off topic. If speaking about your suggestion is off topic, would that not make you off topic for being the one to make the suggestion in the first place ? I do not think that you are being off topic by making your suggestion, and if the suggestion is not off topic then discussing it is not off topic either.
Again, Anet decribes your suggested alternative in negative terms and wants to implement open world dueling.

As a reminder:
“Hey we almost forgot about dueling!
Will this feature ever be implented? Are there any plans for duels ingame now that more than a year has passed?”

This is probably the biggest thing I miss from games like WoW.
When you are feeling bored you can just do some quick duels against random players in the open world.
The whole spvp dueling just doesn’t feel the same because everyone has the highest level, stats, and gear. They should let us duel in the open world with our current level stats, etc.

Custom arenas cannot be used in PvE at all. They are an sPvP option, hence they do not qualify as a work-around for open-world dueling and would not allow two friends waiting for an event to duel while waiting. If you’d answered the kittened question the first time it was asked, Poplolita, you would not be derailing the topic.
Now could you stop derailing this thread into an off topic discussion?
I cannot stop doing something that I have not done.
To the OP,
Anet have said that they want to implement open world dueling. They have shared no timeline regarding such with us. It is entirely possible that they might change their mind if people who desire the feature stop asking, so don’t stop.
For the umpteenth time, if this is implemented put a toggle for players to disable the option to participate and I won’t care.

I posted this on page one of this thread. Skip to 14:11 if the page didn’t load at that point.

Custom arenas make you use your watered-down sPvP avatar and is not nearly as accessible as open world duels. Colin Johanson even admitted it was a awkward way to have to duel.
The whole point of open world dueling is that it happens on the spot. If you want to duel with someone, you shouldn’t have to form a party, join spvp, open up the wiki to learn howto make a custom arena, realize you have to buy gems to make a custom game, go back to checking off achievements and dont duel because no one is going to go through that effort for a simple duel.
Obsidian Sanctum is another terrible suggestion, unless all your friends happen to be on the opposing WvW servers.
If you spent as much time reading as you did trying to argue with people you would save me a lot of typing.

The only negative I can think about it being added is that there’ll be more lag and irritating skills going off left right and centre when I’m trying to do something like craft or forge. This is just my own personal irritability though, and I’d love to see duelling in the game. I’d love to be able to duel my guild members while we’re waiting for everyone to show up for the bounty, for example, without going off to another zone in some silly “arena”.
I’d like to see what my fellow Elementalist’s new build is like and what it’s capable of, how it compares to mine.
I’d like to show my friend what the Ele can do, first-hand, instead of just targeting a mob and stomping all over it I want to show her “this is what I’m doing and why” so they understand the class better, and know when to use their reflects and heals etc.
I want to do this where I decide to do it, not in an arena.
I don’t get why people are so against some of us having fun with our friends. Another positive thing that could come from duelling is the user-created events. Win prizes for beating our best dueller, etc.
