Dumb reasons why you can't play a class/race
I like how “too many people do this” is enough for you to never try something. As if it implies something about your tastes in general.
The only dumb reason preventing me from having a Norn warrior is that my slots are all full, and I don’t want to delete my thief because, well, if our characters are just a bunch of bits stored on a server somewhere, that can be reduced to a bunch of particles arranged in a particular configuration that changes based on the things they experience in the game, and if you look at it that way, how is that any different than us? I don’t want to delete a guy!
I guess I could just buy an extra slot with gems, but meh, I barely play my other alts anyhow.
Norn – Huge females freak me out. Males have super-fat weird necks
Asura – kinda look like deformed mouse-rabbits to me. also they are too small to show armor/wep skins well.
Engineer – hobosack and so low dmg
Necro – I hate how conditions work in this game
All others are fine to me
Not can’t, but definitely won’t.
Charr are the enemy.
Asura are annoying little rats with superiority complexes. Randy Newman said it better than I could, though.
Necromancer: I’ve got one, but the profession is the most pigeon-holed into a particular play-style by game design, and it’s a play-style I do not, for the most part, enjoy. I haven’t deleted because the character is my max-level jeweler.
OP you are a top class hipster, careful to not stop breathing one of these days because “everyone else is doing it too”
JK, I know how you feel about this and while it never stopped me from playing a class/race combo it does influence my choice from time to time when it comes to armors/faces and hair styles.
Necromancer: Ugly minions
Um.. They’re comprised of dead carcases given life. They’re supposed to be ugly.
Stop harassing me about my opinions people, of course they are stupid, that’s exactly why it says “dumb” in the title.
I like how “too many people do this” is enough for you to never try something. As if it implies something about your tastes in general.
Did you read the part in the thread title about “dumb reasons”?
EDIT: OP beat me to it.
I want a sylvari, I’m not sure how I want to make it. Most armors seem kind of improbable/human and the cultural armor is kind of lame.
I don’t have an asura yet because I want to have an asuran elementalist with a scepter/focus and cultural T3 armor and I just don’t like scepter/focus on elementalist.
Those are my dumb reasons why I don’t have an asuran or sylvari yet. Although I’m getting kind of close to making a sylvari – I was browsing the sylvari subsection of the forums to look for inspiration.
Also OP, I think this is a good thread. There are so many dumb reasons why you might dislike a character that make no logical sense and people want to add their commentary. Since most people are, you know, human, there’s bound to be a few dumb/weird reasons why people dislike something. It’s interesting to come in here and see people have strange reasons why don’t/do something just like me. Makes the world more human, instead a bunch of logical robots.

Just can’t think of a reason at all, I play all classes and all races about equally. I have noticed over the years and in many, many games since the internet consisted of dial ports and bbs’s that certain people just cannot play certain races so it is not something new. I have come to the conclusion that those who are more apt to roleplay their characters have an easier time in playing all races and classes. If you let the toon develop his or her own personality versus interjecting yours you will find it easier.
Engineer – hobosack and so low dmg
Wut? Engi have 2nd best dps in game dude.
Tekkit’s Workshop
Charr – stupid furballs, too not-humanoid, armor does not look cool on them.
I can’t play Charr because of their hunched over look.
If they looked like this I would.
but instead they look like this….
I have one of each class so classes don’t apply….well maybe except guardian. I feel like I just steam roll through stuff on my guard. I want a challenge, darn it!
As for races:
Humans — I have NEVER liked playing humans in any video game. I’ve tried it. I can’t stand it. No real reason other than personal preference.
Norn — Slightly better than humans because bears and leopards and tattoos. Still perceive them as humans. Don’t like humans.
Asura — I tried, I really did. Their armour turned me off from them though.
Charr — Probably the second best race (in my opinion!). I like them because cats, but they’re too large and it’s the perceived slowness of their gait that makes me not like them.
Sylvari — All 8 of my characters are sylvari. They’re perfect for me. All hail salads.
No heavy armor for me. No, just no. Well, I have a guardian but convinently banished to a less stressed over third account so not upsetting perfection.
I have the norn = big humans problem. Don’t dislike them, just find them the least interesting.
As a bonus, weapons! Don’t want to have anything to do with maces, scepters, warhorns… probably more things I can’t remember aaand especially shields. Was always bit undecided about shortbows too.
Some of this is inherited from Guild Wars, some is how the battle pose in GW2 with one handed weapons looks, and shields are shields.
Shields, people.
I can only play Charr characters. Humans and Norns are just too plain for my taste. Sylvari to “dainty” I suppose and Asura too cute. I do appreciate other peoples non-Charr characters, just can’t play them myself.
I have a Warrior that is turned into a mule and never see’s the light of day. I just got bored with him. My Guardian rarely gets played other than a very rare stroll through WvW. Not sure whay I don’t like him.
I do play my Necro and Ranger alot and Mesmer sometimes. They all just seem fun to me. All Charr of course. And I have no legitimate reason as to why I like or dislike any of my characters.
Engineer – hobosack and so low dmg
Wut? Engi have 2nd best dps in game dude.
Maybe at 80 sure but when levelling it took me about 2x as long to get to 30 than my other classes. After that I got bored and quit playing it.
I can’t play tall races because run animation speed is always slowed down in, like, every game for some stupid reason. I know they all run at the same actual speed, but it always makes me feel like they’re going so slow, and perception is important to fun. If I feel like I’m taking too long to get somewhere, I’ll have less fun than if I feel like I’m getting places quickly, even if I’m not actually taking any longer.
I only play humans and sylvari because I like to dress up my cute female characters in lots of pretty armors.
I can’t play Charr because I’m still angry about the Searing.
I don’t play Norn or Asura at all because they shouldn’t exist.
You dumb bruh? Just uninstall the game maing…. If you’re gonna have this many issues with so many non issues, you may as well stop playing now.
I don’t play norns because they are fat.
“Please stop complaining about stuff you don’t even know about.” ~Nocta
I hate the Staff #1 animation of female human guardians. It just looks kittening kittened.
Charr, I can’t live with that silly bounding run and I’m sick of pressing 1 repeatedly just to get them to run properly.
I cant play Sylvari, Humans, Norn, Asura, Eles, Rangers, Guards, Nekros, Rangers, Thieves and Mesmers because all my character slots are occupied by Charr Warriors.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
I have one of each race and each class, and have found something to like about them, but I have had personal hangups about each of them on the way to 80 and beyond.
Racial issues:
Humans: For a race “making its last stand” there are certainly a lot of them. And they have forgotten how to dual class in the last 250 years.
Sylvari: Anet’s “Mary Sue” race. Sure they are new and their history is still being written, but I would like to see the focus off them eventually.
Asura: The superiority complexes are cute for a bit, but wear thin quickly.
Charr: An ancient foe. Played Guild Wars for years and can’t help but be upset about that. Walking around the Plains of Ashford only makes me hate them more.
Norn: Jumping Puzzles hate them and the Charr.
Profession issues:
Mesmer and Engineer: Pain to level. I had to force myself to keep interest until I became useful/able to survive fights.
Warrior and Guardian: Hit all the things. Not enough support love.
Thief: Would have preferred a dedicated Assassin profession separate from Thief. It feels messy.
Elementalist: Once you master Fire Attunment, there isn’t enough reason to do anything else.
Necromancers:. Small army incoming.
Rangers:: Strictly pet focused and pet AI is still wonky.
(edited by Sankofa Jimiyu.1567)
Should be able to cover the lot!
Humans: Won’t ever play a human if any other options at all are available. I made one, finished the racial story for the achievement points, then deleted it within 4 hours. Yay for level 20 scrolls.
Norn: I’ll be honest, the real reason I don’t play a norn is because there’s no 6-foot beard option. Were this added, I would. Serious.
Asura: They’re footballs on legs. Just no.
Sylvari: I’m actually really fond of salad… and I don’t play with my food.
Charr: Footprints backwards. Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr throws keyboard out the window
And… the classes.
Warrior: Boring class played by boring, talentless people. I could x8 this for every class but for the warrior, it’s the best I could come up with.
Elementalist: Why can’t I just specialise in a certain element? Why doesn’t Earthquake actually knock down bridges? How the kitten do you play a d/d? Just too frustrating.
Ranger: Refuse to be associated with bearbows in any way. Lucky I even play the same game when they’re on… though if I followed this list strictly, I suppose I wouldn’t.
Necromancer: Corpse explosions not big enough. Death Nova was a thing in GW1. Not being able to wipe entire groups in a hail of body parts depresses me so much I might end up a minion myself.
Guardian: Logan’s a tosser and I’m rubbish at running the meditation build.
Engineer: It’s basically a fashion crime in a class.
Thief: Too easy.
Mesmer: Where’s Backfire? The real one?
Cant stand male sylvaris jumping/mining sound. Its like they are taking a dump. Seriously.
Female norn have an awful moaning, that “haaaaaahhh”. Dieing just because they have to hammer a rock, just 3 times? Dont know about norn males, didnt want to try after a female.
I really really want to like the charr. Awesome culture, interesting story/background and so on.
But they are so clunky to play to me. And the “darwinism”, the whole “I can gut you, therefor I am right” is a bit over the top for me.
And why would a cat, 2,5 – 3 meters and I dunno, 200-250 (?) kg’s of muscle with horns, teeth and claw need a weapon?
I wouldn’t say dumb but I have reasons why I cannot play some races and classes.
Norn
They look utterly stupid when running (that slow jog business) plus Cube Root Law makes them physically unlikely if not impossible. Yes its a fantasy game, but I can’t get over that. Plus, in real combat, that size would get them killed quickly.
Charr
The 4 legged walk looks stupid, their hunched shape would mean most would be crippled in the spine by age 30, plus the size thing again. The clipping issues are also seriously bad.
Necro
Boring playstyle. And I really don’t like the entire zombie/animator of dead style.
Elementalist
Too weak on defence. I had to go elehammer and full PVT armour just to keep the thing alive. Only good thing: I was able to salvage my Runes of Strength when I broke her down to delete her.
Mesmer
Clone clone clone shatter phanta phanta phanta. Boring. And why can Mesmers dual wield pistols while Warriors cannot? :p
Guardian
Slow, short ranged. Great for group play I guess, but I dont play in groups.
Norn Female
- dat voice…makes me delete them right away
Norn Male
- if there was an option to make them look similar to Human’s muscular build, would make it. Tattoos are kewl, but looking like a Tank? Caman
Charr
- interesting concept for running. I dislike the way they wield greatswords and walk and run on 2 feet. Lookds terribly to me. Ascalon War FotM made me hate them.
Sylvari
- I liked first concept of Sylvari which resembled Wood Elves. I dislike to look like a cucumber or carrot.
I’m playing all classes and like them.
The only thing, I would prefer Warrior dual sword to be not condition one, but physical.
Same with Engineer’s Pistol/Pistol.
But that’s personal PoV.
(edited by Tao.5096)
I don’t wanna play humans, I am already human RL and same for norn, they look like huge humans so I don’t play norn either.
I prefer to play non humans, so i have ylvari, asura’s and charr.
Charr are my favo race because of the cat like.
Dumb reasons huh? I might have some.
Norn: The voice. I can’t stand when one of the female norns catches fire. They sound like they just discovered the element. The run animation. I understand that since they’re so tall they only appear to run slower, but I still can’t get past it.
Charr: The only thing I like about these, are some of the people I met who operate them. I can’t stand their lore, I can’t stand how they think, or anything else about them.To this day, I still can’t finish the personal story.
Asura: I really can’t stand their attitude.
Engi: Too easy. It’s like fishing. Throw out a net, wait for a bite, then hit ’em hard. /shrug
Guardian: Also too easy. It also remind me of playing a warrior, only more……blue.
Warrior: I have one, it’s level 30ish.I have to force myself to play him. Too easy and they bore me to tears. Look, I’m swinging a sword…again. Of course, to be fair, ranger greatsword isn’t really that much better. Except the eagle and bear that pop up.
Races:
Norn: everything is just fine here with me, except the fact that if i make a awesome looking tall strong norn warrior or a cool looking hunter… the tallness of the character effects their running animation and it just looks like they barely move their legs at all (specially during combat…)
Human: im used to playing human, in gw1 and in gw2, and in any other game. I try to make my human characters look good with its biography and class choice and its not as hard as it seems.
Charr: As mentioned, they seem too hunchbacky. They are also one of the tallest races and this effects the running animation too much for me…
Asura: unless im going for something small ,tiny and cute asura girl with a quaggan fuzzy hat…. or using a distinctive asura culture armor set my asura wont be noticed by other players
Sylvari: I accepted the race with wide open arms, their background and story and looks are amaizing. But they dont shine untill you put some cultural armor/weaponsor twighlight arbor gear. Otherwise they will look just like any other human…with a woody head.
A sylvari warrior caught my eye the other day since he was wearing some sort of bare chest armor. Was interesting to see a bulky strong sylvari showing off his chest. youd expect some biceps and muscles but there are none
Classes:
Elementalists: Love them, so diverse, so active, so mobile,so versitile, love them.
Mesmers: Im manly enough to play a PURPLE (not pink) class, recently i started leveling one and i love it more than my main ele now
Necromancer: Underated class. Can exceed in dps, condi, tankyness, and even healing..but only if he focuses on 1 thing at a time. Minion mastery is fun for me and ugly minions should be ugly…they are undead and made out from rotting corpses…
Engineers: Love them, so diverse, so versitile…but i prefer magic over steampunk gadgets n stuff. Also using utlity kits skills replaces your epic looking weapons and back gear
Rangers: Pretty fun class to play, makes exploring the world even more interesting as you find new pets . Having a pet active 90 % of the time, even if not in combat can be a bit wierd. also i cant help but to think this class is all about dps…i like to have some versitality.
Thiefs: Never gets boring with this one. While playing it i constantly adapt to the situation at hand. Changing weapons, utility skills, approaching with a different engagement into combat, trying out new combos. Super mobile class and i just love to stealth and steal the end jumping puzzle chest right in front of that giant champion that is guarding it The bad side is that sometimes it feels like the class is all about dps, condi, and the only support it can give is stealthing other players and maybe amplifying their attacks with venoms.
Warrior: while the class is great at doing dps, condi, tanking, supporting with healing shouts, condi removal, blast finishers as well as banners that increase everyones stats and applies permanent regeneration…. it can also rezz dead npcs and downed allies as well as share a whole ton of might stacks with phalanax trait.
The class is versatile indeed….however to me it sometimes feel like my character is a giant building that applies dmg or supportive effects to things around it….
Guardians: My first main class. Has a farming stick, almost permanent swiftness, tanky as heck, supportive utility skills. but at one point it just gets old for some reason…As if its abilities exceed in quality, but lack in quantity .
I can’t play Charr because of their hunched over look.
If they looked like this I would.
but instead they look like this….
This used to bother me a lot more than it does now. Now it doesn’t bother me because the only charr I have is basically a ripoff of Rytlock with T3 and FDS/warhorn.
As a race the Sylvari were not interesting right from the start. It’s probably just a visual thing but I don’t like looking like a plant. I played one to get the story line achieves but the character didn’t last long after that.
Also, Ranger. I didn’t like the pet mechanics at all. At least with a Necro you have a choice to play Minionmancer, or not.
Of course that Sylvari I made was a Ranger. At least I tried them.
The one class I haven’t tried yet is Guardian and I would love to play a Kodan Guardian because Hammers Make Everything Better, with Corrupted Armor just for the “Oh, Yeah!” factor. Wont happen soon, and wont happen at all unless Anet fixes the traits system.
(edited by Herr der Friedhoefe.2490)
Charr: An ancient foe. Played Guild Wars for years and can’t help but be upset about that. Walking around the Plains of Ashford only makes me hate them more.
Progressivism.
250 years have passed. I mean…do we really need to detail all of the changes that can happen in real life over the span of 250 years? Personally, I think it just really puts the immense time lapse into some real perspective.
The asura are too short, ugly and cranky. Always thinking they’re so smart, yet their stuff is always blowing up on them. If they’re so smart, why isn’t Lion’s Arch repaired?
Plant people with no gender, but have breasts makes no sense. And they have fern hounds. Are the dogs their brothers and sisters too? And they have puppies. That’s just stupid. And that mushroom head on Sylvari? Let’s not even go there.
And the charr? God, what a nightmare. What creatures have four ears, horns, and worships fire? Demons. It’s the devil! Only demon-worshippers play demon kitties on crack. For God’s sakes. They killed the humans and turned their lands into a wastebin. And if that wasn’t bad enough? Those poor souls are still wandering that zone after 300 years.
Jesus does not approve.
I started off with 1 of each race. When I wanted 1 of each class though, I ended up with 3 Asura and 2 Norn.
The only character I won’t make is a human female. They are creepy. The age options are 15-21 and the crafting for their armor is dishonest. If it was honest, it would only cost 2 bolts, ingots, or squares of material to make any set of armor for them.
The only race I really refuse to play are Norn. I can’t stand their culture, it’s like a bunch of drunk college kids at Wisteria pretending to be spiritual and part of nature without having any clue of what they’re doing, shooting at local wildlife with bee-bee guns. I mean really what kind of “great hunt” is it when you drag a beast from its home and put it in a small enclosed space for your hunters to poke at? And all their personal story options…. just bleh. Does it all really have to revolve around me getting drunk or doing something stupid?
Maybe it gets better the more you play them, but I just can not get over my first impression to dig that far.
And as far as classes go there’s not really one I dislike or refuse to play. They all have something fun about them though I do tend to favor the medium classes. : )
I have trouble playing as Charr.
Kind of strange b/c I really like their culture. War like, strong, poweful, seems kind of “right-wing” in a way. However, having played GW1 I hate them on a deep level that I have to really RP to even play one. I do have one on my account but I have never leveled him past 30… Too many bad memories.
And why can Mesmers dual wield pistols while Warriors cannot? :p
Mesmers only have access to pistol offhand.
Races:
Charr –
That annoying kittening slow kitten walking and the absurdity at how they fall, they literally belly flop onto the ground from 50 feet up? whose moronic idea was that?
Norn (Male) –
They look like tall dwarves when they run, the ratio of their upper body to lower seems off.
Sylvari (Male) -
The way they look in one direction while their torso points in another, kitten is with that? Additionally, lets also not forget their very robotic running.
Asuras (All) –
kittening like stupid smart kitten that you just want to kick in the face, and it also trivializes a large part of the game which is customizing your character with EXPENSIVE skins which are barely visible on asuras.
Humans (All) –
Just so kitten boring, even their story is boring. But by process of elimination, they are the only alternative for me. They are the best to look at for extended periods of time, they have the broadest choice in armor IMO.
Classes:
Engineers –
Seriously, how long have been people complaining about hobo sacks? The least they could do is replace them with something more relevant to each kit (example: a torso grenade belt for the grenade kit, an actual kittening tool belt for the tool kit?)
Guardians/Necros –
That abysmal mobility, I can literally map twice as fast on my war, ranger, thief and atleast 1.5x as fast on ele.
(edited by Vert.5041)
pretending to be spiritual and part of nature without having any clue of what they’re doing
I don’t see how they “pretend” to follow the Spirits of the Wild. Generally the hunts they go on are based around a certain kill and it’s about becoming a legend and stuff like that. It’s a bit like college frat parties, especially alemoots, but they’ve got a proud culture built on individualism.
Going to post mine before reading all the others, then I’ll go back and have a look. First I’ll say that I have 19 level 80 toons which include all professions and all races, so the pet peeves below haven’t actually kept me from playing these races, but they certainly keep me from playing them as often as I would otherwise or working toward improving their gear, etc.
Ranger: The Pet UI is ugly. Compare it to the other professions – mesmer, guardian, thief…all nice looking job-specific skill bars. The pet UI is not just lackluster in comparison, it is an eyesore and I can’t handle it.
Norn female: I love the faces, hairstyles and tattoos available, but I hate that even the shortest and thinnest body type reminds me of a tall man’s body. I also strongly dislike the running animation and the manliness of the voice.
Sylvari male: I hate hate hate their running animation. Hate it. They run with their back perfectly straight like they have a stick up their kitten that reaches all the way up to their skull. I also hate the over-sized shoulder and bloated skirt issues much of the game’s armor has on them. That said, the rest of their aesthetic is absolutely top tier, so one of my 2 mains is Sylvari male, despite how annoying I find these issues.
This forum is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. ~DevilLordLaser

I have all of the classes, I don’t much like elementalist because I’m forcing it to use staff and I’m not fond of staff, but whatever.
I have a male and female of every race, except Norn.
I don’t like Norn culture, or more specifically the Norn tutorial zone. All the other races are being attacked by one of their personal enemies, while the Norn are just having a party.
Despite that I managed to make a female, as small as I could. But I’ll never make a male Norn. They’re just too big, with absurd shoulders and chests. Even as small as they can be they just look like meat head bodybuilders.
|Daredevil|Ranger|Guardian|Scrapper|Necromancer|Berserker|Dragonhunter|Mesmer|Elementalist

Humans (or races that look EXACTLY like humans, bought called differently)
I’m just bored of them in every mmo. I know, people need something to relate to (in a world of fiction…) But it just seems so….ugh….
Lemme play some weird exotic race, be it bestial, dwarf, elf, etc. It just feels more fun to play something I’m not related to.
Stopped rea ding at engi having low damage. Laughed myself a good one
I have none of this. And No I have no idea what I am doing in this topic either.
Every time…. make a Charr, use level 20 scroll, delete. PLEASE HELP. I don’t know why I can’t play Charr ._.
My 2 cents….
CLASSES:
- Necro. Sounds like fun but I’m just terrible at the class in general.. slowly giving it more time though.
- Elementalist. I have no idea what I am doing. Attunements are annoying to switch back and fourth with and I often click the wrong skill.
RACES:
- Human. Boring. Only have 1 human; female Warrior yet even that is just meh. So glad they removed some of the female human animations though.. looked so ditsy with their stretch animation on a heavy class of all things.
- Charr. My dislikes are towards the armor. It is unbearable to mix and match stuff on these guys… just take a look at the heavy Nightmare Court headgear on a Charr. Absolutely hideous. Zero effort. It’s extremely off-putting for such an interesting race.
- Asura. Similar reasons as the Charr.. lame armors/skins or purely for the fact that they are a small race it doesn’t show well for others.
- Sylvari. Like other(s) have stated already; the “Mary-Sue” of races. I will admit to having more Sylvari toons than any other race as they are intriguing and fun to make with such diverse options yet they’re constantly in the spot-light, especially with the whole LS thing… that and the male Sylvari’s. They seriously look so uncomfortable running around it’s almost hilarious.
That’s about it really. I just wish ANet would take more care in implementing armors etc to make them look decent on ALL races… coughpleasedon’tlookhorribleonCharrscough
Well thats how it is in nature everywhere. We humans do it too afterall…well not the extreme way the charr do but its not all that far off, guess what war is or the arms race, pretty much the same like what the charr life by. And weapons arent much different from tools, natural progression. Humans also sometime long ago realised that its effective to sharpen a stick to a spear if you go hunting or using a sharp stone to cut stuff. Claws and stuff can only do so much…but a coffin sized greatsword in the hand, a bulky, with spikes covered armor and a big nasty charr rifle on the back and that 250 kg mass of muscle is atleast 3 times as dangerous as he\she would be naked. Charr arent stupid…just grouchy and maybe a liiiiittle bit violent. But yea.. darwin is strong in the charr, as for clunkyness yea.. agreed. I on the other hand cant play any other race but charr cause they DONT feel clunky. Movements and stuff feel at charr like there IS some weight behind it and i love that. Other races dont give me that feel…that would be my dumb reason
