So, I’ve been having this theory, but first I’ll give a little background.
Some parties I’ve been in don’t function. Can’t get past a part of a dungeon, keep dying, etc.
Sometimes I’m able to spot the less skilled players (I happen to know someone who doesn’t use dodge at all), but sometimes that doesn’t explain our situation.
A lot of people complain that using mf gear destroys your effectiveness in a party. And it is true that mf gear is less effective than pvp gear.
But non-exotic gear is MUCH less effective than level 80 exotic gear.
I’ve been wondering if some parties are not effective because many members are using non-exotic gear. Either because they can’t afford higher or because they wanted to save money and rely on being in good groups.
But if 4 of those get together in one group….

Anyways, I wanted to do a quick poll to see if this might help explain this phenomenon: What proportion of the items you wear are exotic, ascended, or legendary? and what proportion are not?
(6 armor + 2 weapon + 2 ring + 2 accessory + 1 back + 1 amulet + 2 underwater = 16 items total)
You can give answers for each of your characters you regularly use

My response: 15/15 are exotic (I only use 1 underwater weapon)

armor and weapons, exotic. trinkets and UW gear, rare.

Everything i have on my Toons that are 80 are exotic’s. This is really not a very difficult thing to achieve.

Running AC for tokens is super easy, Running CoF for tokens is also fairly easy. So from those you get decent weapons and decent armor ( AC armor is KITTENugly ).

Players running MF gear in dungeons are just plain selfish and think of just themselves and not the grp. I had over 180 MF gear and i never felt it helped me get better loot from anything, thus i stuffed it in my bank for the last 2 months.

People not in exotics at level 80 are just lazy or not very knowledgeable of the game.

Congratulations, wild claims win again. Suppose someone wants Soldiers gear for every armor slot. Before the dungeon ring patch, the only way to get Soldier’s accessories was from WvW. Suppose that person did not like WvW, and/or did not want to use other accessories that did not give Soldier’s stats. That person is now lazy? Nightmare coil used to sell for 25g. For that money I could be halfway towards another set of exotic gear, which can completely change up my playstyle and therefore refresh the sense of fun in the game, according to you, this is an undesirable course of action because everyone should definitely be exotic’d out first.

So this about runes ? you talked about Exotics, not specifics. I stated if someone was level 80 in dungeon runs not in exotics was lazy.

Wild claims? how is running AC or CoF several times a wild claim ? You act as if this is some impossible feat?

There are plenty of inexpensive runes on the TP that can be slotted to provide decent improvements to a newly minted 80.

If you want specific’s you need to phrase that. You didn’t so neither did i.

Whatever, blame me for pointing out the obvious.

Not sure what your point is. Are you saying the guy who wanted soldier gear didnt bother equipping anything at all in the trinket slots or?

There are plenty of option for filler trinkets until you get the right ones, that would serve the purpose quite well.

Anyways, running full non-MF exo on my toons, everthing is based on spec and what I want to preform best at while in dungeons. Running 1 UW weapon per toon except on my mesmer (for extra phantasm when starting a fight), of course UW is exo aswell.

I have 6 level 80’s, Armor and weapons exotic (all from dungeon tokens), trinkets are all green with Orbs on them.
Whenever I have a new character hit level 80 I always buy Rare Armor/Weapons, then slowly upgrade them piece by piece with dungeon tokens. The trinkets I don’t care for, I’ll slowly upgrade those from doing Fractals when they fix the DC problem, but I refuse to spend a good amount of gold for little noticeable effect.

I talked nothing about runes. I talked about accessories. Trinkets. Amulets. Rings. The time/money it requires to get soldier’s exotic rings and amulets could get you a complete set of armor already. Its nothing to do with laziness, just not worth it.

I find it extremely strange that there is so much hate focused on MF armor, yet very little on people who wear sub-exotic armor. Comparing the stats of a masterwork to an exotic, there is a large gap. It makes me wonder why aren’t there more people hating on others who wear “pirateish” gear, a sure sign of armor below the level of exotics. It also makes me wonder whether magic find hate is more of a “monkey see, monkey do” syndrome, as I hardly encounter this kind of dislike towards on particular armor set ingame, but see it often on the forums.

Exotic armor and weaps, 6/6 runes, Masterwork jewlrey for the most part, and acquatic gear thats very hit and miss…. (got to the end of P3 in HotW the other day and half the group I was with, all guild mates, realized that we had sub-lvl 80 acquatic gear.)

Honestly, I did AC with my guardian on rare weapons till I got enough tokens for exotics, but I don’t think it hurt much. I frequently do AC with guild mates that are leveling alts, so if they can run through on a lvl 42 character in blues, I can’t think that the exotic armor is make or break on function.

I don’t think people not in exotics are lazy or unknowledgeable. Some times they’re on alts, some times they’re newer to the game and haven’t done enough runs to have gear, but they’re in the right place and working on it.

I’ve also seen people with full exotics running around like chickens with their heads cut off, dragging extra mobs into boss fights (Anyone want champion gravelings while you’re on the spider queen?) If a run is struggling, more often than not, it’s the players, not the gear.

… others who wear “pirateish” gear, a sure sign of armor below the level of exotics …

Not really. The exotic crafted medium armor is unbelievably ugly. I have a full crafted exotic set, but I transmuted the coat to a Seeker’s coat skin (which has like a level 20 requirement) because I find it the least horrible of the available skins.

Meanwhile, the armor look I like best for my guardian so far is the karma gear you can get after doing the Gendarran Hills heart quests. He’s only 55, but he has transmuted the skins onto two sets of higher-level gear since he got it.

Anyone looking at those two characters with an eye to their stats would think that they hadn’t upgraded their gear since their early 20s, which isn’t the case.

i m not a big fan of dungeons, but on my warrior toon i have a full set of p/t/v sitting in storage just in case i go into dungeons one day. i normally spent my day in wvw, running berzerker with offensive traits, everytime i go dungeon i need to re-trait into healing shout build, and change armors.

after a few runs(with pugs) i realized its more of the person than gears. i.e. five signet warriors, mf geared players, no matter how i shout they go down in a snap.

dont even wanna mention the ones with commander icon out refuse to listen to others.

That’s what I’m here trying to find out
less than 80 exotic does not mean lazy; it is a legitimate strategy. As Mirta said: it’s cheaper until you get your first choice item. It does decrease the effectiveness, but it’s not necessarily out of laziness. They will, in fact, get their first choice item for less gold than someone who went and bought exotic stuff first.
I did a bit of math, and I think that exotic mf is actually about as effective as masterwork pvp gear. I’ll buy some masterwork gear when I get home and come back with some numbers That would mean the cheapo strategy is as effective as the greedy strategy, and both are weaker than the elitist strategy
