Dungeons - Story Mode = Impossible & reset
Story mode dungeons are intended to introduce you to dungeons, and to also introduce the general story-line of the dungeon. Dungeons have never been intended to be soloable, but some are, if you are highly skilled.

Heh… well, I’m obviously not ‘highly skilled.’
That is an awkward way of introducing a dungeon… “go in story mode and find out… you just can’t do it alone!”
Thanks for the response!
On all dungeons, it clearly says “Recommended Party: 5” when you go to open them.

Good Luck
One thing to note, dungeons are designed to be completed with a group of 5 people. So attempting them solo will be roughly 5x harder than it would be otherwise.
Now, if you don’t want to play with other people, that’s your decision (though one must ask why you are playing a MMO then), but if you want to do dungeons, you’re going to need a group.
Now, getting a group for dungeons is actually really easy in this game. In your friends tab (default shortcut is Y), you have 4 different tabs on the left. They will be, in order,
- Friends
- LFG Tool
- Followers (people who have friended you but you haven’t friended back)
- Blocked list
If you go into the LFG tab, you will be given a lot of different categories to select from, with one of them being dungeons. Click on dungeons, click on the dungeon you want to do (in this case, Ascalon Catacombs), and then you have 2 options.
- wait for a listing that interests you and join that one (you will join automatically without having to wait for someone to accept you)
- Put up your own listing and wait for people to join on you (again, people will join on you automatically). With this option, you can specify what you want (what path you are going to take, such as story, path 1, path 2, path 3).
Now, while that may seem tedious and your first thought being how you don’t want to wait for other people to do the dungeon, you should know that most dungeon listings fill up in a matter of seconds, maybe a minute if you’re unlucky.
Try it out, it can be a lot of fun.
I would suggest filling out your own entry and saying something along the lines of (story mode, first time). The community is very friendly, so you’re likely to get people who are also doing it for their first time or someone who has experience and will help you out. Don’t be afraid to talk to people. GW2 actually has a very friendly community.
~ Cheers!

Dungeons are group content by default. You’re trying to solo content that’s meant for a party. Ofcourse it’s going to be hard. :P Just get a group and you’ll breeze through it like it’s nothing. Have you ever played a game with solo dungeons? I have yet to see one (not that I played a lot of games, but they’re at the very least rare).
Olvendred, I took the ‘clearly’ stated recommendation to be separate from ‘story mode’ option. I suppose I was wrong – thanks for pointing that out.
RSlongK… thanks for the well wishes, will dive into the dungeon forums… youtube is what helped me with the Ascalon Dungeon.
I just really wish the game would remember where you are in the dungeon.
[DDO is frustrating like that as well… spend hours in a dungeon, log-out of game, and…]

Thanks Melanie…
Just wanted to experience the story alone.
Actually Dungeons and Dragons Online, DDO, I go through dungeons alone.
They are designed with multiplayer in mind, but I spend hours going through the dungeons… and enjoy the pace.
One reason that i like going alone is because of my experience with WoW.
People can be in a rush, too slow, I can be too slow, some disappear, etc.
Personally, I have a lot of patience toward people… but I am not the best gamer, though i love games… and do not want to be the cause of someone else’s poor dungeon experience.

Are you on EU servers Dhaylen? If you are message me in game sometime and I’d be happy to help you through some dungeons.

Reading what the game says takes about 10 times less time than writing a post about how basic features in an established 2-year old game are wrong.
I’ve managed to solo AC and the CoF with my Celestial SB/LB Wolf Ranger.
First of all, being 80 and having Exotic gear does help.
Second, you’re going to die. A lot.
Finally, have a remote bank access with you. If I’d had one in CoF, I could have pulled my revive orbs out of the bank (you want those for the final fight), and made my life MUCH easier. Repair canisters, food, boosters… anything like that might be a good idea as well, but if they’re in the bank then changing your mind about needing them mid-run is possible if you can access your bank.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
@Loki, Thanks… part of the issue with grouping is not wanting to hold others back.
My specs are not the best and I can have some pretty low framerate issues.
The other issues I pointed out in my reply to Melanie.
@AdaphonDelat, Thank you for the offer.
I suppose I will hold off, at least until I get a better computer where the lag is not as bad… that way it will be of mutual benefit for both parties in the group.
Thank you all for your kind replies.

Exactly! I read what you just posted… Enter story mode lvl 30 – nothing else on that button to say otherwise [that you need anything else]

Thanks, Palador, Im not too far away now. [Well, maybe from the Exotic gear… but soon enough.]

If that’s all you saw, then unfortunately you do deserve some of the ribbing you’re getting. The point is that the dungeon entrance tells you the best party size is 5 (it says that even if you ONLY have story mode), and above the story mode button, it has a massive button that says “dont have five people? CLICK HERE to recruit more!”
If that’s all you saw, then unfortunately you do deserve some of the ribbing you’re getting."
Actually, you are the second person.
Everyone else has been very polite, helpful, etc..
And, as humans, we all learn, understand differently – just because my intellect is not up to par to your standards, does that justify a ‘ribbing’ as you call it?
If so, that goes to show reasons I prefer to just solo my content.
Thanks to the others though… very kind of you!
I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to reply, both positive and those that may point out the duller part of my senses.
Given that this is apparently the accepted nature of the game, I will move on.
Either I will party with people, when I can get a better computer, or I will wait till lvl 80 and get some Exotic Gear!
This has been helpful and nice to see the type of people in the GW2 community!
Again, many thanks!
p.s.
I did leave a question unanswered, by accident.
“Why play an MMO” – because of the beautiful large worlds and story-line.
Same reason I play ESO! [Even though I wish it were single player with the option to play with friends, and not a lot of other people doing similar quest… with GW2 this is not a problem with how it is set up though… it kind of works.]

If you really want to solo the door guard, it can be done. I recommend lots of blinds and condi removal. Stealth helps too.
Here’s a video of a thief doing it:
http://youtu.be/Ynf92VRaROs
He doesn’t use blinds, but keeps the guy crippled and kites him.
I’ve only done it on engineer. Door guard is a surprising difficult solo encounter. c:
And some people want these dungeons harder
Hmmm. Make story dungeons soloable?
That’s genius!
That would actually fix every problem related to story dungeons.

I’m not sure about every, but it would fix a fair portion of them.
And I don’t mean “Soloable in a few hours, with really good gear, lots of skill, and patience backed by a masochistic streak” like I used.

Yeah I exaggerated. :P
Obviously it should be soloable by someone appropriately leveled.
As a hardcore explorable dungeon runner, I still have way too many characters who can’t open way too many dungeons because I’m too lazy to party with a story group.
I like helping people, but it’s just all the LFG waiting, the scene watching, the people in level 12 gear and the heroes in tank armor who as the last man standing try to solo a boss that’s going to take them 45 minutes.

Thank you, Elegy… I need to try an engineer build.
Trying to solo a Dungeon is simply doing the content WRONG.
If you don’t want to party up, either figure out the mechanics to solo it or skip the content (Dungeons are 100% optional, sans the VERY last Personal Story mission).
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Trying to solo a Dungeon is simply doing the content WRONG.
HEY I like to solo dungeon. Don’t like that word ’’wrong’’.

You could say: Someone used the “wrong” word!
:D
hey OP, just hang on and practice , learn the mechanic , moves ..
They are recommended and designed for a party of 5 , attempting to solo a dungeon require a higher level of skill , I remember when i started to solo dungeon it took me 1 hour and a half for AC story mode.
Today , i only need 15-16 minutes to complete AC story solo with a meditation Guard ( killing all bosses ). I ve done it on every class .. even with a ranger using dual axes and Sword/torch ( no Bows or bears haha ) also with a necro minions master … it’s easy because everything is scripted .. always the same moves /spawns. Only the Troll will troll you hahaha .. he can spawn a 3 or 4 random spot.
Just learn it and one day , you will be proud of you .. and AC Story is the right place to start. One of my guildie asked me .. why are you doing this ? is there more rewards .. am i missing anything ? . I responded nope .. no advantage , i do it for the challenge.
Soloing dungeons help greatly to learn your profession at a deeper level .. it’s more than pressing 1 for the win. Have fun !
