Aside from doing the Halloween, Karka Invasion, and Wintersday Events (and the occasional fractal) I haven’t spent too much time in the open world until recently.

About a week ago I made a new character, and I’m leveling at a nice, easy pace. Killing pretty much anything I encounter, doing events, and NO CRAFTING…

So starting in Queensdale, and after 100% the zone, I look in my bags and see ONE unidentified dye… I thought this to be odd considering I’d probably have about 8-12 by now.

However it wasn’t until I got my second dye that I really noticed it… I’m level 34.. LOL

What the heck happened to the dye drop rate???????

I can only assume this is to promote the sale of the “Dye Pack” for 200 Gems… but considering my main has (guessing) around 250 Dyes… it seems unlikely that one character will ever have them all with the new drop rate… let alone the lack of attention to the age old question…. Doctor Wh… I mean…. ACCOUNT WIDE DYES?

I’m sure there are other topics about this… but my point is TWO drops in 34 (NO CRAFTING) levels…. YIKES.

Leveled my Charr from 15-20 yesterday and got 5 dyes. This has been the norm for me on all my characters that I’ve played since release but apparently it’s rather common for others to have issues with this (your case in point).

Wii Flag maybe?

That’s really awesome if that’s the norm for you.. I’m just floored that… 34 levels (going on 3 zones at 100%… and TWO? lol) – Maybe its just some bad luck but i don’t know.. lol

I have wondered if the drop rate on dyes received a nerf, too. My first three characters got many more dyes during their leveling than my more recent ones. I still get them, but it’s a noticeably lower number.

It’s entirely luck and unfortnately you’ve been by a real stinger of bad luck. I was in Orr yesterday and 4 dropped, including 2 rares.

This topic comes up every week – some people get huge amounts of dyes, some don’t. Swings and roundabouts I guess, but no nerfs, otherwise the whole community would report the same issues and that isn’t the case.

Well with everything being RNG based, it is luck… but I cannot place such a DRASTIC change on just ‘bad luck’ – However seeing that ‘this topic comes up every week’ – there has to be something going on.

I’ll let you guys know what happens in the next 30-46 levels, lol

Actually, we’re not talking about the quality of the dyes that are dropping. We’re saying we’ve noticed a decrease in the overall number of dyes dropping. Whether I get rares or commons, I’m not getting as many as I did during the weeks right after launch.

I’d rather get the confirmation from someone with ArenaNet.

You’re talking statistically there isn’t enough responses… well statistics can easily be skewed based on the viewpoint. This is the first time I’ve come here, but this is also the first time in MONTHS that I’ve noticed not getting dyes… but from all my experience in fractals and explorable dungeons show otherwise.

The guild I’m in with 30+ accounts has only 2 or 3 people who EVER posted on these forums… and if they don’t come here about issues with their class, what would motivate them to do so about dye drops.

What I’m saying is just because there’s not a consistent flow of people coming HERE to post on the regular doesn’t mean they didn’t change anything.

You got a rare, but I’m not talking dye quality. I’m talking about the drop rate of unidentified dyes.

I value your input and feedback, but until ArenaNet confirms or deny it, you cannot tell me 100% without a doubt that there wasn’t a change in the drop rate.

I have noticed a huge drop in the amount of dyes I get. I’m lucky to get one dye drop every couple days. I used to get at least 2-5 dyes a day back before the Wintersday update.

Anyone who is saying the chance for dyes to drop hasn’t gone down is more than likely just trolling. The TP prices themselves show that dyes have become much rarer.

You can see the buy/sell info for unidentified drops over the course of the game since launch:

On Nov. 5 unidentified dyes were selling for around 2 silver. As of now they are selling for around 16 silver.

Thanks but I’m not trolling. I stated my personal experience. You can believe it or not…your choice…but that doesn’t make me a troll.

Also, the market prices shot up to over 13s by the end of November and have stayed about that average since. That was two months ago. Regardless, the TP prices don’t necessarily dictate rarity…could just be that more people started selling them for more coin, nothing more.

Something definitely changed — at least for me. I’ve had fun since the beginning of the game of collecting and applying dyes to my character, but ever since the November 5th update which corrected an “unintentional” increase to the drop rate, it’s been a rare sight to find a dye.

I’m not normally one for conspiracy theories, but it’s quite funny that the “unintentional” drop rate for dyes made them super easy to come by about two weeks before another update which added the consortium dye kit and a dye pack bundle to the Gem Store.

I don’t care if they want to make money off of dyes. I really don’t. But to tell me that unidentified dye drops were unintentionally increased, then “corrected” (which implies they were reverted to normal), introduce 500 and 800 gem dye packs, and leave me with a new drop rate which is anything but what it used to be is insulting.

I’ve had a total of around 12-15 dye drops in that time. I wasn’t aware that people were used to them being more common than that.

Thanks for the personal attacks simply because I have a different opinion than you. Shows a lot of maturity.

So, if I buy a ton of gold with real cash and buy all the dyes on the market and then re-list them for twice as much…that will show just how rare the item is?

Supply and demand doesn’t dictate rarity and markets don’t always follow basic supply and demand. I suppose if you’re going by the earlier high school economics classes it might but not so much when you actually study and practice economics. O’well, to each there own. Either way, thanks again for the personal attacks as they’re always the best way to prove you’re right when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The drop rate used to be amazing. On headstart weekend, before the end of Sunday, I had received a black dye AND a midnight fire dye. Then, a couple of months later, something happened and the dye drop rate spiked bigtime. Folks were getting 10-12 dyes a DAY.

Then arenanet stepped in and “fixed” the drop rate. It has never been the same since.

Don’t forget dye is a big source of gem store income. It wouldn’t help them financially to let very many dye drop at all. They do far better to limit the number that drop in the game, so the main source will said gem store.

I know the OP mentioned not crafting and most of this thread concerns the actual world drop rate but I really think more info (either from Anet or the player base) needs to be released on crafting (cooking in this instance). I’ve thought long and hard about a viable solution that would appease different types of player.

Suggestion:

- create a pool of around 20-30 dyes that are exclusive to the gem store and cooking.
- make the ingredients needed to craft such dyes cost karma/gold or available on the gem store (possible room for powerful nourishment buffs exclusive to gem store).
- make the resulting exclusive dyes available for placing on the trade post.

My hypothetical argument and justification:

- People love chasing exclusivity. Making 20-30 dyes non world drop would mean more people taking up crafting. Leading to a gold/karma sink, making the economy healthier.
- World drop rates can be altered due to the gem store dyes not competing with world dyes.
- More people crafting dyes (with a random result (either exclusive or WD dyes)) means more unwanted dyes circulating on the trade post. Leading to lower dye costs. Keeping players happier and the economy healthier.
- Completionists are happier due to lower costs on the trade post. Traders/Crafters are happier due to more exclusive products available. Anet are happier because more people are interested in the gem store. Casual players are happier because there is a greater chance the dye they are actually looking for is cheaper/drops more often.

Just a side-note to the post:

- Don’t forget that you can take up multiple crafting skills and won’t lose your progress in the others (max of 2 at a time).
- This point in time (in the lifespan of the game) will be most testing regarding issues like this. An ever increasing number of players have completed or satisfied/saturated the core elements of the game, turning to other content like dyes. Prices will be all over the place.
- People are 500+ hrs on mains – so either recognise that more niche aspects of the game will be more frustrating to complete or start running alts.

However, it would be nice to get a line or two from Anet to tell us where or how their plans for dyes will evolve in the future.

Update: Still at 2 unidentified dyes, I now have 4 zones at 100% complete. No crafting exp… all Task & Event exp (lots of kills), and grinding out events til I’m the appropriate level before leaving an area.

Queensdale – 1 dye
Kessex Hills – None
Gendarran Fields – 1 dye
Harathi Hinterlands – None

Age on this character: 58 hours (I am by NO means ‘rushing’ and am definitely killing everything I encounter). These zones also have a lot of bandits/centaurs/humanoid types.

My main character is a bit over level 70 (been playing on and off since launch), I’ve had a handful of dye drops and half of them, were duplicates of dye’s I’d already gotten. It’s beyond frustrating. And, seeing as they’re character bound, it’s kind of ridiculous given how many dyes are in the game.
