In my few months in game i have yet to come accros a black dye… which is very fustrating for my Thief :-(
And they go for 6-8 gold on the trade post !!!

lol ~ Abyss is the rarest dye, most have never seen it. I’ve had it drop once myself a few weeks after launch. Dyes in general have had drop rates nerfed into the ground, before the nerf you could see dyes drop once or twice a day, now its maybe once or twice a week…if that.

Pretty sure Abyss is as rare as all of the other dyes, the demand simply makes it expensive.

Well, not after a rare Abyss black, just ‘any’ black would do !

Iron dye is a good black and only costs like 10s on tp. Or you could try pitch dye for slightly more (not sure if it is darker or lighter. Either should suit your needs really). Black dye is the second darkest black dye but it is pretty expensive (not compared to abyss though).

Abyss > Black > Pitch

Black is always going to be the most sought after dye in any MMO. People in general think black looks dangerous, and that carries into MMOs. So the prices are always going to be high since many people want them.

I found a black dye on my warrior. not abyss but black. Abyss is just a shiny black, and yes ever since after the Haloween event the drop rates seemed to had taken a nose dive, and after the Karka event the drop rates seemed to had taken a huge plummet.

You will have more luck taking Rare (yellow in name, not yellow in color) Dyes from the Trading Post, and taking them to the Mystic Forge. I’ve managed to create 4 or 5 Abyss Dyes and a handful of the Celestial Dyes. Chances are slim, but since it costs very little gold to buy dyes it should not take many before you get what you are looking for.

From my experience, I’ve found that I almost break even after selling the abyss dyes, or I find myself getting an abyss Dye on the first or 2nd try and making 6-8 gold in profit.

But seriously, you’ll have a MUCH better chance of getting it by forging rare dyes into the Mystic Forge. I hope this helps.

The dye drop rate makes me sad as I want to collect all the dyes.

Try midnight ice, its a pretty good substitute imo.

I have noticed that Dyes drop less for me too. Personally i would love to get my hands on simple White, Silver and Gold. Don’t get me wrong I love the different variations and their names especially but sometimes I just want the plain simple color, not “mocha hot decaf chocolate brown” or “Sticky under your shoe yellow” lol
