The new dye system is quite frankly a piece of crap to say the least. Everyone complained about not having account bound dye and they changed it to a even worse system then before. Before you just had to unlock all the dyes and you could dye your armor any time for free. Now every time you dye 1 piece of armor we all have to pay gems and or gold.

Now lets use logic here: Buy the dye in game then pay to dye 1 piece of armor every time we change armor colors .

Full set 6 transmutation charges (recurring charges each time you dye full armor set ) + buy the dye in game.

1 time dye unlock on each account and free dye change is much cheaper then every armor piece costing 1 transmutation charge every single time you change 1 armor color. I also feel sorry for people that like to change it up every day so your character does not look stale.

Thank you for everyone that complained to make the system even worse and thank you Arenanet for becoming a money grabbing company. I have been playing Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 since it first came out. Never thought something like this would ever be implemented by Arenanet. You seriously amaze me.

You don’t have to pay charges to dye things. That UI is just misleading. If you look, when dyeing, it says it costs 0 charges.

You don’t need to use a transmutation charge to dye things. Using dyes are free anytime. You use the charges to change the skins. This whole post should just be deleted.

Try reading a little before rage mode or simply take the time to try it yourself first.

Why would the dye system continuously ask if I want to spend transformation charges each time I dye my armor if it doesn’t change into the system later?

Nothing to do with dying armor, mate. That’s for changing your look. Dying armor doesn’t require charges. Nor does using zenith skins from reward chests, hall of monument skins, or skins from costumes you’ve bought from the shop.

And that says nothing about ever charging you money for dyeing. It’s more to compensate the PvP people that would like to wear their PvP outfits all the time.

So why does it ask to charge each time you dye your armor if the system is free. Yes I clearly see its 0 now but why say charge?

Because the UI is stupid and such a lazy way of designing it was probably easier. The same holds true for free skins such as your achievement skins – it asks you are you okay with spending 0 charges.

It doesn’t. If you select a new dye you will see it says “0” charges. Just try it. What do you think “0” charges means anyway?

Why would the dye system continuously ask if I want to spend transformation charges each time I dye my armor if it doesn’t change into the system later?

Because the UI changed, and it was more efficient and better for the playerbase to be able to look at new gear and new dye combinations at the same time.

There is no cost for dyeing. I’m sure many would complain if they had to preview armor combinations through the wardrobe, then open some other window to look at dye combinations on said armor, then click one set, then click for another. People find it confusing, already. Lol. Just think how much more confusing it might have been if both armor preview and dye preview would not be in the same place.

All it’s doing is verifying that you liked the dyes you picked and weren’t just previewing new colors. If you had looked at it, you’d have seen the charge number says 0.

Ever tried to program an UI? You go with what’s more efficient and if you can get away with reusing the elements you choose to.

Because 0 = 0

0 does not equal +1 or later or whatever. Look, don’t worry about it. Your dyes are free. Trust us.

I’m hearing a surprising amount of paranoia about future charges for dye changes. The UI is the way it is so people can experiment with dyes and wardrobe changes simultaneously— That way I don’t transmute my armor into something else, only to discover (several transmutation charges later) that Redemption Dye does, in fact, not look so cool on my new set as I thought it would. Yeah, I could pick a new dye, but if I’ve payed $30+ gold for a particular dye, I might care more about the color than I do about the armor skin.

It drives me crazy that the the dye screen mentions costs, because I’m always double-checking to make sure I didn’t accidentally select an armor piece that’s going to cost me (which is extremely unlikely, at least for me,) but after I heard the reasoning for it, I have to say it’s not a bad solution.

It isn’t confusing if you changed armor and it cost but if it continuously says cost (even if it says 0 now) while only dying armor. That leads people to believe it will cost at one point in time.

ok Redead I have your answer, the reason why it asks when changing dyes is bc you can flip between armor tab and dye tab. So if you are changing armor and flip to the dye tab you can look at how the colors would look before you waste charges. It would show a charge in that case and it’s really not hard to understand it.

It also doesn’t matter if you have to click to accept a zero charge when just changing dyes, it’s built for the reason I just explained. It’s not that big of a deal Red :P

The UI how ever suggest they’re going to charge to apply dyes in future.

Just look at China Guild Wars 2. 23 gems each time they open an unidentified dye.

First Spvp outfits have been monetized. Trust me. It’s coming.

Doubtful.

The whole change to dyes was (in my humble opinion) an attempt to make Gem Store dye packs more valuable.

Basically, now the only way to obtain unidentified dyes is to use 5 laurels or craft 4 dye packs on a chef.

Previously, it was absurd to consider buying a dye pack. It’d often be cheaper to just convert Gems to Gold and buy the dye that you want.

Now, I’d fully expect the price of dyes to go up (especially after everyone uses all their remaining unidentified dyes).

This will, in turn, cause cooking materials to be worth more as chefs are one of the only in-game sources of dye packs.

Overall, it seems good for the game’s economy. (But potentially bad for new players)

I’d be very surprised if they tried to monetize it on both the front and back end.
If they did so at this point (after people are already accustomed to being able to re-dye for free whenever they choose), I think they’d be shooting themselves in the foot.

TL;DR: They promised unlimited-use, account-bound dye unlocks BEFORE the game ever launched. Then they made them per-character (and eventually reduced drop rates) in an attempt to make dyes more valuable but it didn’t work in the long run.

They can’t really make dyes cost gems to apply at this point. It’d only further push away existing players.

Or they can craft dye unlocks for free.

They don’t have dye packs in their Gem Store, but rather Dye Unlocks. We also don’t know if dye unlocks are available elsewhere, just as dye as a reward is here. They may be able to purchase dye unlocks with laurels, just as we can purchase dyes.

The UI is simple on/off switches.

Dyes always = 0
Wardrobe Skins = 1 per piece

You have up to 14 pieces of equipment that can be skinned. Those currently equipped pieces = 0. Now let’s do the math shall we:

Fully Equipped

Head = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Shoulder = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Chest = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Hands = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Legs = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Feet = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Set One Main = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Set One Offhand = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Set Two Main = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Set Two Offhand = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Re-breather = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Underwater Set One = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Underwater Set Two = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Back Piece = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Skin and Dye Changes

Head = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Shoulder = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 1
Chest = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Hands = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Legs = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 1
Feet = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Set One Main = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Set One Offhand = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 1
Set Two Main = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Set Two Offhand = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Re-breather = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0
Underwater Set One = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 1
Underwater Set Two = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

Back Piece = 0 Dye = 0 Skin = 0

0 = Off
1 = On

Since Dye always equals 0 charges, any Dye changes are 0 + 0 = 0
In the change example we have four “Skin = 1” which means there are four 0 + 1.

Those four 0 + 1 = 1
Then you add up the 1s to get how many charges the changes will cost which comes to 4.

The only reason the Dyes are in the switches is because you can change the skins and dyes at the same time and apply the changes together.

I actually agree with Redead; it’s irritating for it to even mention the word cost when changing dyes. To me, the idea of someone highlighting the fact that something costs $0 or whatever implies that it’s something that I should be paying attention to, as in it’s a special occasion.

It doesn’t seem illogical at all to assume that it could very well mean that it won’t remain free.
