Dyes Bought with Gems
There’s no such thing as an ‘investment’ when you buy electronic items in a virtual world.
The game could go down tomorrow and everyone’s digital barbie doll skins would be rendered useless.
That’s why it’s important to understand the difference between physical money (dollar bills) being used to buy physical goods and services vs using electronic money (credit card) to buy electronic, nonphysical items.
I don’t think people understand the value of money these days because they rarely hold actual money. If they did, they would be ‘investing’ it in other things if they are expecting an actual return. Think of the money that you’ve given ANet as ‘support’ for making you a product that you enjoy, however you shouldn’t ever be considering it an investment.
You paid for a service, the service you bought was “x dollars for a chance of get Y dye” and you go that, right?
If in a future that “investment” was not worth, it isn’t the providers fault.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

Correctemundo. It’s like saying you deserve lottery winnings because you bought a ticket right before the winning ticket was sold.
You do understand that investment is risk the more risk the better the pay off but the more likely the lose. Most low return investment have some level of risk why would you think that there would be no risk of things changing that not in your favor?

Not necessarily true, as is made very clear here: http://www.slideshare.net/jaspurewal/the-use-and-legal-status-of-virtual-goods-and-currencies
Whatever the legalities, this move essentially means that A-net has sold me something under a clear set of terms, and then changed the terms of the sale after the fact so as to erase the value of the items sold. A very bad business decision! Why would I ever buy gems again?
1. ALL duplicated dyes will be refunded ( IS what ANET said )
2. If you read the term and condition or w/e , anything in the game is ANET property. Even if they change stats on an ITEM for example , they have NO obligation to refund you or to allow you to change the stats. anything they do is 100% courtesy.
3. they also mention that EXPERIENCE MAY CHANGE or VARY! meaning they can change anything they want in the game and you can not sue them.. (basically )
4. in the LINK you posted they mention Blizzard ( diablo 3 ) that is a great recent example. people paid real cash for uber items , they got nerfed and people complained. Blizz won.

Your link leads to a presentation by a leading legal representative in Europe. They have different regulations when it comes to electronic goods.
If you look at the whole presentation it shows clearly that this is an area of unsettled law in both the EU and the US. Legalities aside, I feel quite ripped off, and that’s all that counts. If A-net does refund all duplicated dyes, then my entire thread will be moot, and I will be quite satisfied with the outcome.
As it is right now, a duplicate dye that is worth 100+ gold on the TP will be replaced with a random unidentified dye. Hardly just compensation. If they instead gave me back an unopened dye of the same kind that I could then trade or sell on the TP, that would work very well.

All dup dyes will be replaced with an unid’ed dye.

You wouldn’t, but many will keep buying gems until they find a better place to waste their money (and if ArenaNet ever fix the bugged DE’s, I will be one of them).
You think you lost but, YOU DIDN’T BOUGHT DYES WITH REAL MONEY, you bought gems and gems is what you received. If you used those gems on dyes and then, they changed how dyes work, that’s a totally different story.

Leaving aside the OP’s hysterical anger for a moment, if I have Blacklight or Flare on all 41 of my characters (I don’t btw) I’d like to think I’d be getting something a little more than an Unidentified Dye for each. I’m not one for freaking out about refunds or compensation but it doesn’t seem quite right.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

When you created an account, you agreed to the terms as stated in the User Agreement. Link: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-user-agreement/
Pay particular attention to the following:
3. DURATION OF AGREEMENT, ACCOUNT TERMINATION, REFUND REQUESTS
4. ACCOUNT AND PAYMENTS TO NCSOFT
Do note that if you decide to start arm-chair quarterbacking on legal issues you may not have experience in, this thread may disappear.
First, I don’t plan to turn to the legal system, even if I did have a case. The point is simply that A-net is destroying a lot of the ‘virtual value’ that players paid for in good faith. Even if A-net has the ‘legal right’ to make me feel duped and ripped off I think this is a terrible business move. people who haven’t paid money for duplicates come out ahead, but then again they don’t have a history of buying a lot anyway, right? People like me who spent a lot and feel ripped off will either not buy gems any more or quit the game altogether.
Correctemundo. It’s like saying you deserve lottery winnings because you bought a ticket right before the winning ticket was sold.
Actually a good analogy would be if the lottery sold you fifty tickets and I only bought one. The lottery then issues a statement saying “It doesn’t matter how many tickets you bought. Everyone who bought any number of tickets now has exactly the same chance to win.”
The lottery “just changed how tickets work”, right?

Except you didnt lose that dye, you used it and you have used it for x amount of time already, now all your toons get to use it and you get new unid’ed dyes in return for the extra ones.
Leaving aside the wisdom of purchasing dyes with real money, which I personally find mind boggling, you got what you paid for, a chance to get a dye. Now you get a greater benefit from those dyes, at least, that’s how it is for me but I’m one of those people that has an Abyss, Celestial and a few other high value ones spread out over different toons, none of which I ever paid for with real money.

Just to clear this up, you don’t have a case. Making sure we get that out of the way.
Now then, when changes are made that impact a player’s Gem bought items, Anet has in the past offered refund options. They don’t have to, as per their User Agreement, but do so anyways because it’s the right thing to do. But with regards to dyes, it’s been stated that any duplicate dyes you have across all characters will automatically trigger an UnID’d dye to make up for it. If you open it and end up getting another duplicate dye, simply sell it on the TP.
Many times people threaten to quit this game over mechanics or updates that they don’t agree to. That’s fine, as you’re free to do as you please. If you decide to come back, your account will be the same as when you left it, albeit much further behind in terms of content and wealth generation.
Wealth? You yourself said that in-game items have zero value.
These dyes were purchased with REAL MONEY and used up only BECAUSE THEY WERE SOUL-BOUND. Now, I’m out all of that investment
Dyes from the dye packs are soulbound? Don’t you mean the pack was account bound and although you could have sold the dyes, you chose not to? How is using a dye on a character considered an investment? It’s not like you can resell it later, unless you meant you planned on selling your account.
It’s not like they’re taking anything away from you. Stuff like this also happens in real life, where an extra feature you once paid for is now included for free. The joys of living on the bleeding edge.
Lottery tickets are not a smart investment.
Wealth? You yourself said that in-game items have zero value.
They have zero “real dollar” values. That’s quite different than being able to buy a Precursor or exchange Gold to Gems.

Thank you, I do realise all this.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
As the owner of 11 level 80 characters, I have spent a lot of gems to buy the special event dye packs from the gem store. In many cases I bought 10 or more packs in order to try to get multiples of certain dyes so I could have them on more than one character. I used multiple of copies of the same dye on different characters when I could have sold them on the trading post for 100 gold or more in some cases. These dyes were purchased with REAL MONEY and used up only BECAUSE THEY WERE SOUL-BOUND. Now, I’m out all of that investment… and extremely frustrated and angry about the whole thing.
What now?!
Now you hopefully learned you should never spend money on micro-tractions. You are harming the game and the gaming industry (because your paying for bad behavior) and you harm yourself.
So it was an expensive but good lesson I hope.
Next time safe your money for an real expansion.

You can look at it from the other perspective. You can now use those expensive dyes on 11 characters without paying any additional gems/gold. So, basically, anet just gave you 9 free dyes. Your welcome.
Therefore, I’m guessing you won’t be complaining that you can now use those high value dyes on all 11 of your toons now instead of the 2-3 that had one.

Why? How did you lose anything? You purchased those dyes so that several of your characters get this dyes. That was your investment and that’s exactly what you got and what you will still have. You won’t lose anything by the update, in fact you will even get something extra: unidentified dyes. So you get more than you previously paid for.
That getting those dyes for all of your characters ist easier under the new system than under the old one, is no reason for complaint. If you buy a vacuum cleaner and two months later it is sold for half the price, do you get angry too?
Is this OP for real?
They give you free dyes on alts and you still complain?
You bought 5 same dyes for 5 chars?
You still have what you bought.
Did Anet remove your dyes? No,they give you the same dye for free for alts.
But your problem is simple:
“Why someone who bought one dye is equal with me since i bought 5 same dyes?”
Nobody FORCED you to buy dyes, you bought GEMS,you got your GEMS,you can buy 1000 dyes, you get what you spent your GEMS on + free dyes for future alts.
Next time think about what you write.
“We are now! We are forever!”
I wonder if someone that expected reimbursement for duplicate dyes, would be willing to pay ArenaNet for every dye a character didn’t have (and now received) before the dyes were made Account-bound? Could be rather costly with several alts getting some of the higher-priced dyes, which only 1 or 2 characters had before. Hmm….

The devs must have purposefully set you up! They knew this was coming! What a bunch of evil, greedy, uncaring people!
Just kidding. The devs have got to make the right decisions. At least you’ll get an unidentified dye for every overlapped dye that you own. You may get some crazy rare dye, who knows. I’m sorry this happened to you and I’m sure the devs are too. I suggest you be more careful before investing real money in a game that is constantly changing.
