Dyes - Gamble & Flipping Market
If you don’t want to gamble on dyes, buy them from the trading post. There’s, what, three hundred plus colours on there? You should be able to find a cheaper colour that does what you’re looking for rather than spending hundreds of gold for the more expensive/gemstore dyes.
Gamble boxes are how a lot of companies get their money. Everyone’s gotta make some. ^.^
I’m glad it’s just dyes personally. We can just farm a bit of gold and buy em off TP after the gamblers took their chances.
1. I’m not the only one who hates to gamble.
2. I would rather pay 800 gems for the whole dye pack, account bound or give us the option.
3. COME ON! its just color, this should be free in the first place.
4. There is someone out there buying all the low quantity rare dyes and just over pricing it, +800g.
5. I used to play the flipping game back when I was playing RS but GW2 has to much actions and I have limited time to just play another flipping market game. So no, Im not going to do that again.
6. We all love a free market but somethings just give an advantage, especially things coming out the Gem Store.
Some rich dude who doesnt even bother much about dyes and the way he looks, just bought that dye for 800g, just to make you jealous.

Thats crazy! I wouldnt mind buying the whole pack if they sold it for 800 gems($10) instead of gambles because thats already like +$90 by the time it gets to flippers. so that just pushes people away, instead of encouraging players to try new dyes.
Someone pointed this out a while ago as a tool for finding similar dyes. It does a so-so job, sometimes great, sometimes not so great, depends on the color.
RIP City of Heroes
I am averse to gambling. I am also one of those players that doesn’t tend to have much gold. I have had to change my entire outlook on dyes…rather than plopping down gems for the chance at a particular dye or set of dyes, I have forced myself to convert an amount of gems to gold and then simply buy what I want off the TP. As others have said, this really does work nicely and lets you get what you want.
If you are not so averse to gambling, I guess there is always the chance that buying one dye pack will get you that super rare, expensive dye you are looking for but I am not willing to bet on it.
I unlocked all the dye colors in GW2 and all I got was bragging rights on the forums.
Seriously Anet, how about “To Dye For” as a title or something?
Sorry, no one is getting a monopoly on the standard rare dyes. I track dye prices regularly and whenever there are a few days in which a particular color spikes in price, it drops quickly back to its previous equilibrium prices.
The only dyes that are crazy expensive are the limited edition dyes, because they are only available for a limited time. When the kits from which they drop are available in t he gem store, these colors never cost more than 100-150g (and typically they go for much less, sometimes dropping further a few months after the dyes leave the gem shop).
The only ones that are 800g are colors that were not nearly as popular until recently and the TP supply has dropped to nothing. Sure, some have made money speculating on these colors. And many will lose out when ANet re-introduces those dye kits, as they always have in the past.
tl;dr you can get over 350 colors for reasonable prices and each “premium” color has a cheaper alternative.
Costmetics are a large part of the endgame, so I’m not sure I agree they should be all free, although maybe a few colors added to the base pool once in a while would be nice.
Totally agree on the gambling. It can rot in the underworld with Dhoom.
The colors are nice but don’t provide any advantage, not sure what you mean there.
But yes, I’d much rather just get the colors I want, same thing for BL skins, etc.
But enough people are willing to gamble that they get more profits from the existing system than just selling them to the rest of us.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

I would love that. I feel like it’s a collection worth getting something for once completed.

I am sorry but my guild was having its weekly manipulation-workshop the other day and in honor of Exclusivity Month, which Tin Foil [Hats] holds every year in August in anticipation of Anniversary Week, we discussed several concepts and action plans to express our exclusivity while making a gold coin or two.
While we have always been a bunch of super-wealthy know-it-alls, whose primary goals were to get super wealthy and manipulate markets in order to make the overall gaming experience for casuals and veterans alike as dislikeful as possible, we have also started to rp.
To distinguish ourselves from casuals and non hardcore veterans, we invented new looks for our mains that on one hand use skins and dyes that are limited, so they are easily manipulated with the unlimited gold supply we have, and on the other hand, show how awesome and amazing we are.
Once we established. which skins and dyes we want to use, we bought up all remaining supply, not to resell them with a profit but to make the mayority of the supply unavailable to all the casuals and noncore veterans, which we deem unworthy to even apply to join our exclusive, amazing and awesomely super wealthy club of gentlemen.

If you want a particular exclusive dye, buy them from the TP whilst they are still available in the gemstore. They won’t get cheaper when they get discontinued.
Alternately, I can really recommend using this website: https://www.gw2bltc.com/tool/dye/search
You might be looking to buy an exclusive dye worth hundreds of gold, but you might be able to find a colour that dyes the exact same (or very very close) for far less.
For instance, Shadow Abyss costs north of 150g currently. If you were planning to use it on metal, you can find a dye that colours the same for just 5g (Shadow Yellow). If anybody is interested, Midnight Fire dyes the same colour of shadow abyss on cloth material too. It’s just leather that doesn’t have a 100% match.
I am actually surprise by how many of my dyes seem to to match what i have but are called something different, opr at least I do not see the difference. Also sometimes packs of dye sell the same color it seem. I recently bought a set of the low level new lion arch dye to find out i had already a couple of them.
I think scam boxes are cancer and should be banned in all forms; however I’m making 200g a day in SW so I can’t really find the motivation to cry about scam boxes here since it’s just dyes and BL skins.
The market flipping on dyes is super-cancer though, dye packs should stay in permanently, there is no excuse for 80g dyes to shoot up to 300++++++++ after they are removed.
Let’s do a multiple choice quiz.
Let’s say there is something new produced and while it is being made it is common and cheap. It then stops being produced, there is less and less available each day. People still want it and it also can only be used once.
Q1: In this scenario prices will
1) go down. The item will get cheaper.
2) not get cheaper or more expensive. The price stays the same
3) the price goes up. As there is less and less available and people want it, they will keep raising the amount they are willing to spend.
Q2: you own one of these items, you wish to sell it and as the prices rise you will
1) refuse to increase to match the going price. You will stay at the price it was when it was easier to get
2) you will match the going price to sell it, even if it’s gone up to 300 gold plus
Answer wisely. Your answers will determine your future economic health.
ANet may give it to you.

“Dye-hard”! !
You are the useless log of flesh we have to drag behind us as we move forward.
“Dye Hard” is even better
Dyes from most of the limited edition packs are dropping from BL chests even now.
This is just a warning to people that are trying to make money speculating on rare, limited edition dyes, that anet itself is trying to make money speculating on rare, limited edition dyes.
As for the non limited edition dyes, those still haven’t leveled out ever since anet dumped a glut of them on he market. Hopefully, those should rise in price.
Gambles don’t always lead to profit. Take a look at what they did to Monocles in the past. It was re-released, and the values dropped 90%.

I’m still waiting for you to review my guild application. I want to jump in and help with the dye purchasing so I, too, can make some Gold.
I never worried too much about rare dyes, and sell them if they have any real value. Early on I bought all the Ice and Midnight dyes cheap for instance, and never felt a lack from not spending hundreds of gold to get true white and black dyes. With that small investment I can get close enough to black or white in any color scheme I want that I can’t really notice a difference, just have to pick them for contrast against other colors. There are so many color choices that you can pick up for next to nothing that I’ve never felt like I was missing out by skipping gem store or regular rare dyes. The only exception I could imagine would be if they released a bunch of glow in the dark dyes. I would want those. I would want them real bad… Please Anet, never add glow in the dark dyes.
Dyes are my 3rd biggest source of gold income, quite frequently I’ll buy out the last of dyes and relist for double or triple the price in small portions and watch someone buy them all up and do the same.
….. And Elementalist.
