Earning Gold
I tend to do mostly events in PvE, I’ve been running around some higher level areas lately, but the drops I get are pathetic. Yes, magic find gear is supposed to help, but a full set can cost you upwards of 50g. I just spend about 10g equipping and crafting myself some new exotic armor, and now I’m down to about 20g total between all my toons.
So, what do you people do to earn gold?
Wait, let me guess: Run dungeons (I’m looking at you, CoF P1)?
Is that the only way to earn gold with your time? By farming and repeating the same freakin areas over and over again? At the rate at which I earn money in pve via events and selling the mats and very very rare Rare item I get, i earn … maybe… 1 gold per 4 hours. Barely enough for two gambles at the Cattlepult.
Come on ANet! I know the economy is meant to be balanced and you put in all these gold sinks, but the current system rewards constant grinding! There’s no inscentive NOT to grind (other than I hate grinding) – since it’s just about the most profitable venture you can do!
It’s not even that challenging, it’s just time consuming. There’s no skill in grinding – its repeating the same content over and over again. No rewards are given for varying your non-grind activities at all!
I can earn up to maybe 5g on a good night in WvW. That is about 2-4 hours of playing.
If I really need to hit it hard for some gold I run fractals and dungeons, I refuse to grind so I will not spam CoF1. If you have a lot of karma the orrian jewelry boxes can be profitable if you are lucky. I got a bunch of charged cores last time I gambled with them and out of 100 boxes made about 40g.

I used to -never- have gold, but after they added the guaranteed rares from world bosses, I’ve steadily been earning enough through selling ectos and now have over 50g on my main, with about 10g on a few alts. All I can suggest is to do a few world bosses and cathedrals every day, salvage any rares you get with the BL Salvage Kit or Master Salvage Kit, and between them do some event running in Orr.
You don’t even have to do that much every day, I only farm events once a week if that, just doing some world bosses will net you a gold or two a day if you’re lucky.
Dungeons are a great way to earn money, albeit a bit slower than normal. Not just cof but other dungeons esp TA and CoE as they have chances to drop lodestones and cores which you can sell. Not just that, you get tokens which you can use to outfit yourself or your alts so you don’t need to spend as much. This is how I outfitted my guard, and how I will outfit future alts (barring clerics though, coz there’s no dungeon with that prefix).

I do occasional world bosses, though I also have armorsmith/weaponsmith to 400 so I’ve been saving up ectos.
I suppose I could do all world bosses once per day… and start selling the ecto…maybe.
How long did it take you to work up to 50g?
Edit: Also, not to diminish your acomplishments, but 50g is peanuts compared to what some things cost, and how much money people earn. Some guy in mapchat was bragging about having 600+ gold from MF gear and getting rares/exotics all the time. All he told me is that he spend 50g to outfit himself – but that’s gambling a whole lot on the RNG which often seems to hate me.
At a guess I’d say about a month or so, doing on average 5 bosses/cathedrals a day, and selling all ectos/runes/sigils/exotics/cores/lodestones(well, the one I got).
Edit: And I know 50g isn’t -that- much, but without farming events for hours and running factals or dungeons repeatedly, it’s pretty good.

Mon-Fri i do 7-8 of the bosses and daily without fail
I salvage all my rares unless there over 30s and i sell on TP
I havent sold my ectos their in my bank and i have a lot.
I sell the sigils which can net you around 5s each
I do spend around 4 hours on a saturday and sunday in orr farming mobs with my mf gear
Sunday for example i had 1 exotic, 12 rares in 2.5 hours. All the mats i keep and i open all the bags and keep the mats to.
Never go past a node without harvesting it.
Dungeons and Fractals i may do 2 a week.
All i can say is just play the game, get involved with what is happening around you and you will soon make gold without even realising it dont try and chase specific targets it will happen over time, have fun and play
1. Do not purchase and use Magic Find gear. You will be a leech if you wear it in dungeons and will be disliked for it.
In my personal experience, the best way to go about getting geared up is by simply doing dungeons.
It only takes half a minute- go to gw2lfg.com, find an EXP group for a dungeon, copy and paste the ad poster’s name, and type /join person’sname and away you go!
It’s that simple.
Those tokens will rack up as you experience the dungeons, and you’ll have more than enough to get your full set. In addition, you’ll gain quite a good amount of gold as you do this so you get both tokens and gold.
Don’t think about token and gold gain, just try to enjoy your time in the dungeons, then you’ll suddenly be like “woah, i have 20g! I have 1000 tokens!”
Yeah, I guess I should resign myself from having more than 100g ever, unless I spend all my time grinding (and I can’t).
That’s kind of what irks me – things like Legendary weapons are so prohibitively expensive that unless you grind like a mad man you won’t ever obtain one.
It’s NOT the fact that they’re designed to be hard to get that bugs me, it’s the fact that there’s so much grind in a game who’s manifesto focused on “less grinding” —-——-
Dungeons are a good way to make money, but please refrain from using Magic Find gear. It’s an incredibly selfish way to play this game, and most of your income in dungeons comes from drops that do not factor in your MF (like the money from bosses, and the chest contents).
Running the various ori nodes around the world can also net you a pretty penny. At 3s15 a piece, you earn over 1g a day by collecting all the nodes in Malchors, CS and Frostgorge. Picking up some omnomberries on the way can further increase your profits.
I kitted my main out in exotics for mf gear and dungeon gear.
I found after that i really just built gold and mats up over time.
It wasnt until a couple of weeks ago i thought about going for my legendary when i realised what i had amassed just over time.
Dont think about legendary yet gear your main up and let the gold/mats build up over time.
Remember the tortoise won the race not the hare, so dont be in a rush to get your legendary work at it over time.
I’m not particularly aiming at a legendary, but the stuff I’ve done so far hasn’t yielded that much towards one anyway.
I wasn’t talking about MF gear in dungeons – and I’m not an kitten.
I meant MF gear for places where it doesn’t make a difference – like the zerg-ish mobs farming events in the Cursed Shores or the Karka Train. Since those are usually completely overpowering the enemies, your gear there makes much less of a difference.
It’s somewhat disheartening that a lot people have suggested Dungeons as a good way of making money. Part of this post was, indeed, to ask how people make gold, but I am aware that gold dungeon runs are common, and I despise both the fact that that grinding is so well rewarded, and the whole stigma surrounding dungeon speed runs (not normal runs or playthroughs)

I have zero issues with earning gold.
Spending it however is a whoooole ’nother story
I just play whatever I feel like playing that day and I get drops from everywhere. I hate farming with a bloody passion (think that is the most boring way to play MMOs) and I really enjoy that there are so many ways to make gold in this game.

When you say “zero issues with earning gold” – do you mean that you earn so much that you don’t know what to do with it?
And please, feel free to share your preferred methods of earning gold
50g?
I got a traveler’s set, traveler weapon, traveler accessories and upgrades for something like 15g. You don’t have to even get exos, you just get rares since they have the same MF stat, the only expensive part of that was the runes which made up like half of the entire value.

Though this is farming in every literal sense, there are rare nodes which spawn every 24 hours that will net you some nice profits. Cursed Shore and Malchor’s Leap generally have 5 orichalcum nodes, 5 ancient wood nodes and 5 omnomberry nodes each. Frostgorge Sound and Southsun Cove usually have 3 orichalcum nodes and 3 ancient wood nodes. Their positions vary on every server and they are moved around after every weekly maintenance update. The only exception is one ori node in Southsun that never moves but it’s guarded by a champion karka.
You could hunt these down yourself or you could go to http://orrmaps.com and get their general locations easily. They aren’t always correct but I find them accurate around 80 to 90% of the time.
When I use to do daily node runs it took about 30 minutes to cover all 4 maps. I found that wood and berries were fairly easy to get but there would always be that one ori node that Anet had to put in the most kittenish place possible. On Cursed Shore, one of their favorite spots is near the meta event for the temple of Grenth. You have to get past a lot of enemies that love to stun, daze, cripple and use knockback.
Now that you can guest on other servers, it is possible to do 3 runs daily. I will discourage you from doing so very often as Anet has made it clear they didn’t like players abusing the overflow servers so I’m fairly certain they will frown on exploiting guesting as well. They basically said they’ll frown but turn a blind eye to it unless it gets out of hand.
