Economic "rebalancing event" of the past?
No, I think he’s talking about adding new sources and uses for existing mats which shook up the markets. Things like salvaging ectos and changes in drop rates. The massive source of snowflakes.
The Zephyr Sanctum exchange was more of a temporary sink to drain off the excess.
RIP City of Heroes
There are many people that also think this. I asked a question on reddit about what he was going for with this. It sounded like he is trying to drive up the price of previous worthless items than bringing expensive ones down.
To do that he would have to suck up excess supply then have a new demand for them or cripple supply output. IT is not enough just to cut off supply.
Defiantly going to be interesting to see what actually happens and is an exciting time for speculators.
The Zephyrite merchants while it raised the price it came right back down when the event ended and demand went away while supply resumed. Hopefully we will see something more permanent.

Was also things like Scarlet’s invasion, made lots of $$$ then boom ascended gear.

After reading John Smith blog at the end he spoke of re-balancing events like the ones in the past. Is he talking about the four winds festivals?

Do you think we will see the same materials targeted at similar ratios? Should I be throwing money into gossamer instead of thick sections? Seems like around May 20th of last year gossamer was worth more in the event than thick sections.
The word event here makes me think this isn’t like silk’s material requirements all being increased or like ectos being salvageable for dust. It’s most likely going to be another temporary event where you can dump a ton of a mat into the forge for a miniscule chance at a neat reward. Just like the Great Butter Purge of 2012.
My guess would be the introduction of account magic find and ascended crafting in Sep 2013.
He also made a blog post about incoming disequilibrium of the economy that time.
The post is still a good read, even retrospectively:

So are you suggestion that 500 jeweler might come into play? That would be awesome.
But that wasn’t really a “re-balancing” of anything more of an introduction of things that were new.

I am not suggesting anything.
But that update did alot of balancing, before that, blue/green gear was basically worthless. But ascended crafting raised the value of alot of common mats, raising the salvage value for those and essences of luck added an account bound value to it.

Ah…I get it. I only started playing a few months ago, so to me, requiring low tier mats for damask/deldrimor, etc. seemed a little peculiar, but now it makes sense.
I was thinking it would be like Lost Shores final event, where tons of precursors were looted.
Whats particular about this time. We don’t have alot of information other than salvage rates are changing and whats being looked at is scarcity of some items. It would be the first time they didn’t mention something new was being added and just threw it in.
Everyone is on the thick leather hype train expecting it to pull a silk, but I dont see how people are going to unload as many units as that are out there in peoples banks right now and expect the value to hold. Save something extraordinary that creates demand for thick leather that can only be obtained through leather that is just not going to happen.

We saw the screenshot of the precursor crafting requiring 10 ascended leathers.
Just speculating, but I note. 10 ascended leather times 38 precursors == 380 ascended leathers for the set.
Is that enough t5 leather for you?

That’s exactly what an expansion is though right? New things that will shake up the economy.
Could be that the most popular item in HoT requires 500,000,000 coral orbs. Currency a useless item, suddenly a very popular item. This means the ability to loot coral orbs would need to be vastly increased to prevent them from becoming 100,000g each. Or say that the new stuff in HoT requires very little mithril. Currently mithril is used to forge precursors. Well the new HoT precursors can’t be forged, so mithril is going to be used much less in the future. This means mithril will start piling up and become less and less valuable until it looks like thick leather. This means John might be reducing the amount of mithril we get to prevent this from happening.
NOTE: These are theoretical situations, not truth.
