I realize that this is a gold/ecto sink – however, I went ahead with my 1000 gold and 300 ectos and began to gamble.

100+ tries later, I ended up with 3,500 gold (3.5 x what i had before) and 1500 ectos (5 x) what i had before. I have played this games tons and have never gotten a precursor drop so I kind of consider this my “precursor drop” as I understand the data shows a net loss over time.

How many people hit it big? Anyone hit it bigger?

So far, with the few times I have ecto gambled, I have pretty much broken even on gold and a bit ahead on ecto. However, I am pretty cautious at it, and don’t spend a ton of time with it……if I am losing quickly and consistently, I will back off and come back another time to it. And I have never tried buying the most expensive one….I always go with the middle or least expensive one.

Also, my main has always had horrid rng……part of the reason I am so cautious….I probably need to try it with one of my other characters.

Somebody did. They lost miserably. The odds are very much not in your favor with this and a few days after release there were multiple threads complaining about it.

Those threads are notably buried at this point, but they exist.

i did a little bit of gambling. started at 144 ectos and ~25g. spiked up to 28g and 220 ectos, got greedy, fell back down to initial-ish numbers, had the sense to quit.

I did the 100 tries on the day of the release

After 91 tries, I was ~2k gold down, 500 ectos down
in the last 9 tries I turned my luck around significantly and
After 100 tries, I was 100g up, 4000 ectos up ~1500g profit

I stopped there happy and won’t be trying again

Casino rules, odds are always in the house’s favor.

This game has enough stupid rng that comes at no cost, why would I waste gold to experience more disappointment cause odds are that is what the experience will be.

In that same thread, no one has been able to propose alternative mechanics that are better in all the relevant dimensions. RNG in gaming rewards is like democracy as a political system: as bad as it is at times, it beats the alternatives.

Plus, some people like to gamble, especially with digital coins.

the alternative to RNG is a system where the only way to achieve rewards is to put in an arbitrary amount of work – ie, gold, and buying off the tp.
If you don’t like the rng system, you simply don’t have to play with it – grind out the gold to meet TP prices on the thing you want.

I swear to God everyone I’ve seen with legendaries just gamble their ectos for fun and come out on top with like 1,000g+ or roll rares in the forge and out comes precursors like it’s common loot and then when I try with all my hard earned gold I lose it all. Over my years of playing I found that everytime I try stuff with RNG involved anet comes out with the finger “*#%!% YOU AND YOUR HARD EARNED GOLD!” With around 2500g including 4000gems that I bought myself on my birthday lost to RNG since 2012. I usually run around with 300-450% magic find and I feel like this accounts fate was made upon creation to have THE kittentiest luck ever. After losing everything I now quit this game.

2500g wasted you couldv’e bought as lengendary. It’s a long term goal remember slowly slowy catchy monkey. As i say to guildies etc save up and dont spend and gamble, yes it takes a while but it is achieveable.

Gambled with ecto, and got down to 5g, and 76/100 on the skritt support. You logic fails on me.

Still, I farmed sivlerwastes the last 2 weeks (2h/day) , ONLY playing, not gambling with anything else, and what do you think? Got back to ~200 g. Thats in 2 weeks playing.

I could have a few legendaries by now but whenever I get past the 500g mark like 700-900g I end up blowing it all on the forge after so many guildies and people in map chat pinging their precursors saying kitten like “300g #worth” I always end up depressed after my many failed attempts. Then anet just adds this ecto gambler to make it worse and I even had to sell my pet undead chicken to fuel my newly found gambling addiction where I then lost it all. I have nothing tradeable, just a lot of skins on my account sorry.

More like, the smart get richer, the dumb get poorer.

A rich person would never gamble more than 10-20% of their money on any single thing, that is how you lose it all. I typically have investments in 40-50 different items, and if I gamble at all I only do so with a set amount of money, usually 10% of my liquid gold.

I don’t buy frivolous things, and I farm my own mats even if it takes me an extra few weeks. Everyone is playing the same game, starting from the same point.

I’m not lazy, I farmed that gold all by myself from dungeons to frost gorge to the now new farm silverwastes where I spammed “F” everyday. The difference between me and you is that you already have legendaries, you barely have anything to worry about. I honestly didn’t keep very close track of how I was doing. Sold all the excess ectos at the end, about 4000 of them. Ended up with an overall gain of about 2500g, give or take a few hundred. I was closer to 3500g up at the 200 mark, but I got greedy and lost some of it on the last 100.

Boy I love these posts.

“I see other people winning, so let me dump all of my money into RNG even though I’ve already been burned and understand there is a good chance I will lose it all, but since I’ve seen at least two or three people win, clearly it must be worth it”

“OMG I lost my money!! Anet I hate you! I quit!”

For every person with a legendary that you see winning 1000s of gold, there are at least 20 people that have lost money. Or do you not realize that’s how gambling works?

The vast vast majority of people I’ve seen in map chat who are discussing the Mystic Forge are discussing it because they are complaining about wasting their money. I can go months between posts of people exclaiming how they got a precursor from it or anything remotely good from it.

You’re not alone in the luck department though. I’ve played since launch and I’ve never gotten a hold of a single item of significant value. I’ve already accepted that I’ll never have a Legendary because I’ll never be able to afford to buy every needed ingredient outright. There are still some nice skins out there to have fun with that aren’t Legendary.

I stick to the cheapest gamble (in order to increase the number of attempts thereby getting closer to the expected outcome) and have noticed a trend in which you gain Ecto and lose gold.

Using the more expensive gambles will result in wildly varying outcomes (massive wins and massive losses).

Oh RNGesus, who art in the cloud.

Hallowed by thy dice.

Thy precursor come,

Thy rolls be done,

On earth as it is in the forums.

Give us this day our weekly drops

And forgive us our greed

as we forgive those getting exotics they already have

And lead us not into farming,

but deliver us from glitches.

I have crafted two legendaries and have pretty good overall wealth, 0 RNG or gambles involved.
