I am not looking for “suggestions”. I would just like to make a comment.
I know anet doesn’t like things like the Engi farm in Lake Doric.

However, I wish there was some way to farm t-6 & t-5 mats that could be done when your real-life schedule isn’t conducive for level 70-80 areas. My day consists of 30-45 minutes of game then “step away” (not botting) for 15-30 minutes. When I was afk from my computer I’d pass by occasionally to re-set turrets.

What complaints I heard were to the effect,“the engi-farm was dropping the BLT price on leather”, yet others would state the hill farm was better for leather. So, the engi farm could not be bringing the cost of leather down, it’s the hill farm. I have not noticed a significant drop in leather to begin with. I don’t have time for hill farm, so while the engi farm didn’t drop as much, “less leather” is considerably more than “no leather”.

For those people who are going to suggest I do the hill farm, you didn’t read my comments. For those people who tell me to just buy the mat’s off BLT, I don’t have time to hope to get into fractals – can’t buy mats unless you can build up your gold.

So, for the next several months I’ll get my dailies, and maybe a frac or HoT – if I can do something quick.

Oh, and since the engi-farm is now defunct, how about beefing engi’s up? I never played mine because it was ineffective and not overly fun.

The way I farm is to do whatever I like or have time for, sell (or salv+sell) stuff I don’t need, and use the gold to purchase what I need.

You answered you own topic. ANET doesn’t want to encourage afk farming. It fills player space for people actually playing.

I am playing… it’s just my lil tushie isn’t on the chair. In fact, most of the time when I step away…afk…I am not really gone… I check my screen often so my turrets stay up.

And, I do farm by running around and salvaging. But, in the summer I can’t farm in high end areas because … this time of year…it’s very difficult / time consuming to find a spot to not die. I have to run until I can find a nook or such – so, mid-farm…go find safe spot (if I go to char select, I’m killed when I re-log), then when I get back I have to back-track to continue the farm. So, I lose a lot of game time.

I know I’m probably more of an exception, but it was nice to be able to go to the bathroom and not have to find a “hidey hole”.

You’re either afk or you are playing; but you can’t do both at the same time. And when you’re afk, you’re by definition not playing.

Any hey, i sympathize to a degree here. You don’t have the same amount of time to throw at the grind, so other people have more than you and that’s frustrating. But… that’s just how it is. That doesn’t mean it legitimizes the AFK farm, it just means you’re at a disadvantage that’s not really anyone’s fault. You just gotta live with that.

I understand why they took the farm away… It definitely wasn’t how Anet envisioned their leather farm.

I do however commiserate with you.

I’ve been doing homework/online classes on 2 monitors and turret up on the 3rd. Or fold laundry, though I generally stay in my chair. I just won’t be able to farm throughout my ‘home time’ during the day and have to rely on my hour of play time before work to make my gold. I have a sneak suspicion though that the “engi farm” won’t go away, it’ll just move to a different map.

Engi farm was a good lazy way of making some money. However there are things 10 times better in the game to make gold.

That only take two key press. F12, Enter. Alternatively … dying doesn’t really matter.

I usually park my toon in the guild hall whenever I need to step away for a moment (bathroom, kids, cooking, whatever). Heart of the Mists is also a decent option, although it’s too crowded for my taste.

One of the main reasons I love this game is that it allows me to play for 30 minutes here or there when real life allows and still feel like I’m doing something productive. Many of the high-level maps can be played this way, if not most (except Dragon’s Stand due to the length of its meta).

I don’t farm. My time is too precious for that. Fortunately, this game was built around the idea that players gather their shinies by playing, not farming. I play wherever I enjoy myself and don’t worry about needing to get this or that, and at the end of the day I find myself with enough resources to regularly be able to afford some shinies, which among other things include two legendary weapons, a legendary backpiece and lots of ascended stuff after 4.5 years of playing that way.

Play when you have the time to play, and accept the fact that you won’t play when you don’t have the time. You’ll get your shinies just from playing. There’s no need to half-afk farm in this game.

I wonder why some people believe they are entitled to passive income. You don’t have time to play the game, you don’t have income, it’s that easy really. ArenaNet is already generous by giving you stuff just for logging into the game and opening a chest (Mystic Coins sell for good money). And if you can spend 10 to 15 minutes per day, you can get 2 gold doing dailies.

I see the incentive to do that kind of farming, but apparently, that’s not what ArenaNet wants in their yard, respect it.

It’s also really stressful to semi-afk while doing something that requires your attention. That’s why I stopped playing browser games. I switched from an MMO to a browser game because I imagined it will be easier to just play while doing other stuff, and you don’t have to spend 2 hours focused on a raid. I switched back to an MMO because here I can choose when I log in and play. In browser games, other people decide when you need to pay attention, and they don’t care if you need to do the dishes right now, they’ll just send an attack, at any time of the day. That was stressful, and the truth is that you cannot fully focus on your studies if you are constantly watching if your turret needs to be replaced. Don’t know what you are studying, but if it’s something you can do without focusing for at least an hour straight, you are either a genius or you don’t know the requirements of learning.

It is certainly more efficient to pay undivided attention to studying for 1 hour, do a fractal for 10 minutes, then studying again for an hour (more efficient for both your studies and gaining gold). That is if you have a short attention span. You can also study for 2 hours and then make a break. This semi-afk farming while doing stuff that requires thinking burns you out. Been there, done that.

I love how people are trying to justify afk farming.

“But I have limited time and I swung by regularly to make sure my farm was still working to get me passive income!”

Like if you literally can’t even see what is wrong with this I really hope you aren’t in the majority because humanity is doomed.

I’ll probably never understand why afk farmers defend their non-action so desperately.

I think the game you want to play is Runescape. That’s the kind of game you play while afk or doing other stuff.

Also I take insult at:

“Oh, and since the engi-farm is now defunct, how about beefing engi’s up? I never played mine because it was ineffective and not overly fun.”

Engi is THEEEEE best and most fun class…….and tbh it sounds like you don’t even deserve to have access to the class. :P

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

It doesn’t, really. There’s not enough players interested in “actually playing” there for it to matter.

I never touched the farm and I main engi.

Also, since they fixed the farm, can they finally address how bad the turrets are? They’re a godkitten ed joke. ArenaNet, would YOU PLEASE KINDLY LOOK IN THE ENGINEER FORUM?

I find the scrapper engineer best for farming. They are great at the run, grab and get away. As far as fighting there is some areas like Verdant Brink where the engineer is more effective than a ranger. I typically use rocket boots, flame thrower, a turret and sneak gyro; sometimes a supply crate. Drop a turret then rocket boot around with the flame thrower attacking.

…even if there were enough players, a new map instance would spawn. It’s not like there is some cap on the number of those out there.
