According to wiki:
“The Elder Dragons
The natural role of the Elder Dragons is to keep magic balanced by consuming it and drawing it into themselves. Every few thousand years, the Dragons awaken and consume everything around them, thereby reducing the world to a low level of magic, before going back to sleep. From then, the magic they have consumed bleeds out into the world, only for the Dragons to awaken once more and the cycle to begin again.”

That means that by the each killed dragon, planet becomes more and more charged by magic, which ultimately will not bring anything good for sure.
It is similar to the purpose of Reapers in Mass Effect.
Dragons save the planet with their existence, and dead Tyrians are just collateral damage.
Just like in ME.

This brings forth the question. What will happen in like 10 years when we manage to kill the last one? Will we get to see cinematic of planet Tyria to blow up or old Gods coming back to it and revive dragons? :P
By the way, is it possible that Gods created those dragon for this purpose? Maybe Gods wait for them to kill us all, and when some another primitive race will emerge from the ruins, the Gods will show up again.

Magic will continue to grow stronger and stronger, and since there are no dragons to consume it, Tyria will explode of overcharge.

Time to face the truth, the dragons are the good guys, and we, we are the evil corruption on the face of this planet.

The 6 Human Gods did not create the dragons. The dragons were already in existence when the Human Gods came.

The cycle of life and death continue, of rise of civilizations and downfall of others continue. The jotuns showed this in Arah, they were once a great race, quite capable and intelligent, but they disappeared. We are simply in another cycle, one I expected humans to go extinct and still hope to (although I know it wont happen due to people wanting to play humans…sigh, so boring of them)

We could always store the magical energy in something we could control

Before the human gods came, and the last time the dragons awoke, magic was stored in the bloodstone.

Then the human gods came, looted the bloodstone, abused it to give magic to their own creations (supposedly) humans. Then war broke out and the human gods decided it wasn’t such a good idea to leave such power in the hands of humans. So they broke the bloodstone in 5 pieces and sealed it with the blood of king Doric. Unfortunately, they tossed the pieces in a volcano in the Ring of Fire islands. After some time the volcano erupted, shooting the bloodstone pieces over Tyria, their contained magic slowly seeping back into the world.

That’s it guys, blame the human gods for making the dragons awaken again. They probably saw this coming and quickly left Tyria for a better place. “Oops teh durguns r gonna awakes now, better leave for our summer lodge in the mists cuz they gonna burn our cribz, bb guysies”

After we do kill all the elder dragons, Arena-Net is going to do the “Good job breaking it, Hero” cliche where heroes are always the ones breaking everything. The Gods will return and will wreak havoc themselves and create an almighty dragon called The Singularity, where it masters all elements and can change the very fabric of existence. Tyria explodes and says “Nothing lasts forever…” and we return to our alien planet where humans originated from, then we unlock the furry race.

They were the gods of every race, not just humans. Similarly, every race abused the unrestrained magic of the Bloodstones, not just humans.

Per the OP it would be nice to see the game actually address this, it would make for more complex and better stories.

Plot twist. The gods are the physical manifestations of the dragons consciousness during their “sleep” time to regulate magic use. So the dragons are one and the same as the gods. The mass amounts of magic causes them to go berserk until it is in safe levels. lol just kidding. I am curious what relation the gods have with the dragons. Three must be some reason they just disappeared right about when the dragons began to awake.

Nothing says that the magic in the world is ever-increasing.

The Elder Dragons consume magic. But they also exude it.

The question is: do they exude all of it back into the world? Does magic increase?

We don’t know. Nothing says Tyria will “overcharge” with the Elder Dragons’ demise. And the Elder Dragons certainly aren’t good guys, given how they don’t mind wiping out entire civilizations time and time again when all they “need” to do is consume magic – there’s no need for them to corrupt stuff.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I just want to say that it took us nearly 2 years after we defeated one dragon to “move” (because we currently don’t know what we’ll do about it) to a new dragon.
And after that dragon there’s 4 others waiting. That is if they don’t introduce a seventh dragon.

So at this rate, we won’t have to worry about it for years (and by that time, GW2 will probably have been killed to make way for GW3…). Unless they decide to have one of the dragons kill the others, which I’d find to be kind of dumb.

I think the gods did not make the Planet they brought humans to it so maybe the gods some how caused this unbalanced by taking humans there or just simply staying on the planet. In a way most of the dmg was caused in GW1 when the gods where spending too much time on the planet.
As for the exploding lol just because you have more of something dose not mean things will just blow up what might happen is magic will changes things and will simply be resisted into spaces AND that when the spaces dragons start to come after this planet hehe. That is your assumption. Alternatively, we can say that with every awakened dragon, world gets filled with more corruption and destruction, which ultimately does not bring anything good for sure.
The first is pure speculation. The second, from the point of races living at that time, is a certainty.

It is similar to the purpose of Reapers in Mass Effect.

The “purpose” of Reapers was an effect of AI going off its rails. Reapers were not saving anyone.

Dragons save the planet with their existence, and dead Tyrians are just collateral damage.

So… the dragons were there before the planet?

This brings forth the question. What will happen in like 10 years when we manage to kill the last one?

There will be less destruction all around. Planet was there before dragons (most likely), planet will be there when they are gone.

Actions, not words.

You are assuming that the lore was written as part of some over-arching story arc, with great consideration given to continuation and consistency in the plot.

Rather I think the lore of Guild Wars is a bunch of random stories written by numerous people, who have absolutely no collaboration with each other…

More I read about it , more I feel like this is kind of a tough situation. I mean Elder Dragons needs to be stopped , that’s for sure but killing them outright ? From what we saw, they exist to consume magic from EVERYTHING , including us. And when they get enough of their fill , they sleep and let it sweep through to the world again.

What will it mean if we destroy the elemental cycle of the world ? Will the nature of magic start to go ’’wild’’ like it did 11,000 years before as said in Jotun writings ? Are we dooming the whole planet just to save our skins ? Because lets face it, a mortal’s lifetime is nothing compare to the whole cycle and planet. Sure a total genocide of all races is bad but we already saw what happens when mortals get their hands on powerful magic and it will get worse if there are no Elder Dragons to consume it.

There better be a way to contain the magic and so on , otherwise the whole Elder Dragon Crusade is just another way of going ‘long-way around suicide’

Thats why I like the personal and smaller stories better. It is easy to connect with and don’t have ‘’ you are doomed if you do, but dead if you don’t ’’ crap that will leave more questions.
